Book The Cambridge Primary Review Research Surveys

Download or read book The Cambridge Primary Review Research Surveys written by Robin Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Primary Review Research Surveys is the outcome of the Cambridge Primary Review – England’s biggest enquiry into primary education for over forty years. Fully independent of government, it was launched in 2006 to investigate the condition and future of primary education at a time of change and uncertainty and after two decades of almost uninterrupted reform. Ranging over ten broad themes and drawing on a vast array of evidence, the Review published thiry-one interim reports, including twenty-eight surveys of published research, provoking media headlines and public debate, before presenting its final report and recommendations. This book brings together the twenty-eight research surveys, specially commissioned from sixty-five leading academics in the areas under scrutiny and now revised and updated, to create what is probably the most comprehensive overview and evaluation of research in primary education yet published. A particular feature is the prominence given to international and comparative perspectives. With an introduction from Robin Alexander, the Review’s director, the book is divided into eight sections, covering: children’s lives and voices: school, home and community children’s development, learning, diversity and needs aims, values and contexts for primary education the structure and content of primary education outcomes, standards and assessment in primary education teaching in primary schools: structures and processes teaching in primary schools: training, development and workforce reform policy frameworks: governance, funding, reform and quality assurance. The Cambridge Primary Review Research Surveys is an essential reference tool for professionals, researchers, students and policy-makers working in the fields of early years, primary and secondary education.

Book Primary Mathematics and the Developing Professional

Download or read book Primary Mathematics and the Developing Professional written by Alison Millett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-07-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract. This introduction sets the scene for the remainder of the book by considering first the international context of widespread concern about the improvement of numeracy skills. This is related to reform movements in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries aimed at modernising primary (elementary) school mathematics curricula. A detailed account is given of the National Numeracy Strategy in England, a systemic government-imposed response to concern about standards implemented in 1999/2000. This includes a discussion of the alternative meanings of numeracy. An earlier initiative sponsored by a United Kingdom charitable trust reacting to concern about primary numeracy was the Leverhulme Numeracy Research Programme. This large-scale longitudinal study and linked set of case-study projects, focusing on reasons for low attainment, took place during 1997-2002. This book, and each other in the same series, is based on results of that research. The timescale fortuitously enabled the research team to also report on some effects of the systemic reform in the National Numeracy Strategy. 1. THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT In many countries, there are recurring periods of national concern about the low standards of calculation skills shown by children in primary (elementary) schools. Recently, these concerns have become more urgent and more political with the publication of international comparisons of mathematical achievement, first at secondary and more recently at primary level (e. g. Lapointe, Mead, & Askew 1992; Mullis et al. , 1997).

The contributors are all leading researchers from the USA,Canada and the UK. Together they provide a synthesis ofstate-of-the-art thinking on the complex change process inAnglo-American contexts, policy-making for public service reformthat generates managerial complexity, and practice in serviceorganizations to improve provision. Special reference is made toeducation and health: the largest and most complex of the publicservices. The analysis has wider relevance for other publicservices and national contexts. Managing Change in the Public Services is essentialreading for all concerned with public service improvement - leadersand managers in service organizations, administrators, trainers, advisers and consultants who support the management of change,policy-makers and public servants, and advanced course students andacademics.
