Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laboratory mold and experimental procedure were developed for unidirectional solidification of AISI 4340 low alloy steel by Electroslag Remelting (ESR). Major emphasis was to control solidification structure by developing methods to control and study factors affecting the important thermal variables. The effect of power input, current density, slag depth, and electrode diameter on electrode melting rate, temperature gradient in the liquid, G (sub L), and isotherm velocities, R, were studied and related to structure. Electrode and slag cooling were employed to enable achieving increased G (sub L)/R. Electrode melting rate is the main parameter affecting the important thermal variables. The structure of the ingots was found to be compatible with thermal measurements. Finally, a computer heat flow model was developed to predict metal pool shape and depth, and other important thermal variables for different operating conditions. (Modified author abstract).

Book Electrically Induced Vortical Flows

Download or read book Electrically Induced Vortical Flows written by V. Bojarevi°s and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-11-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every scientific subject probably conceals unexplored or little investigated strata, which may show up at the proper time when favourable conditions coincide (practical demands, a circle of scientists prepared to recognize the novelty and capable of giving impetus to the development of a new theory, etc.). Something like this occurred in early seventies for magnetohydrodynamics, which at the time was considered to be a relatively complete branch of hydro dynamics with no apparent broad, unexplored areas. It was unexpectedly realized that, in addition to the traditional methods of affecting an electrically conducting medium, there is yet another way, one which subsequently lead to a new direction in magnetohydrodynamics. In the Soviet scientific literature this direction has been termed 'electrically induced vortex flows', the essence of which are hydrodynamic effects due to the interaction of an electric current passing through the fluid with its own magnetic field. It cannot be said that this direction was created ex nihilo: individual studies related to the flows driven in a current-carrying medium in the absence of external magnetic fields appeared in the sixties; in the thirties the flows them selves were known to take place within electrical arcs; and yet the first observa tions on the behaviour of liquid current-carrying conductors were made at the beginning of this century.

Book Electroslag Remelting Towards Clean Steel

Download or read book Electroslag Remelting Towards Clean Steel written by Chengbin Shi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the results that the authors have achieved on the study of functional principle of electroslag remelting for production of high-quality clean steel. The dependence of oxygen, sulfur, and non-metallic inclusions on the processing parameters of electroslag remelting is assessed. The fundamentals and technologies of clean steel production by electroslag remelting have been applied in the round to discuss oxygen, sulfur, and non-metallic inclusions evolution and control. A general concluding remark and a perspective for future work are present. The book is likely to be of interest to university teachers, researchers, R&D engineers, and graduate students in material processing and pyrometallurgy who wish to explore innovative technologies that lead to more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable clean steel production.

Book Peculiarities of Refining and Hardening of Metal During Electroslag Remelting

Download or read book Peculiarities of Refining and Hardening of Metal During Electroslag Remelting written by V. V. Panin and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanisms of the steel refining in electroslag melting were investigated. The desulfurizing process occurs during the period in which the electrode is melted and drops of the metal are formed. Non-metallic impurities are separated from the metal by adsorption of the slag, and not by rising to the surface during metal crystallization. Corundum in an acid slag provided little purification. CaF2 significantly reduced impurities. More pure metal was obtained with ANF-6 slag. Work was done to determine favorable conditions for metal crystallization in the water cooled crystallizer to obtain ingot with minimum number of defects. The depth of the metal bath and rate of melting of the ingot affect the crystal growth: experiments confirmed earlier works that with slow melting and low bath depths, crystal growth is almost axial, and with increase in these factors, radial growth and formation of cavities arises. An extensive study was conducted of the heat flow in the melt and crystallizer. There is a direct relationship between the temperature of the slag and the depth of the metal bath; the heat losses through the tray, in the water-cooling system and by heat accumulation in the ingot are very small; most of the heat flow is through the walls. There is almost a direct relationship between the depth of the metal bath and the flow of heat introduced into the bath by the metal drops. Isotherms were drawn showing the difference in heat distributions in the electroslag melted ingots resulting from heat from the slag only, and from heat introduced by the metal drops.
