Book Basketball on Paper

Download or read book Basketball on Paper written by Dean Oliver and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey "inside the numbers" for an exceptional set of statistical tools and rules that can help explain the winning, or losing, ways of a basketball team. Basketball on Paper doesn't diagram plays or explain how players get in shape, but instead demonstrates how to interpret player and team performance. Dean Oliver highlights general strategies for teams when they're winning or losing and what aspects should be the focus in either situation. He describes and quantifies the jobs of team leaders and role players, then discusses the interactions between players and how to achieve the best fit. Oliver conceptualizes the meaning of teamwork and how to quantify the value of different types of players working together. He examines historically successful NBA teams and identifies what made them so successful: individual talent, a system of putting players together, or good coaching. Oliver then uses these statistical tools and case studies to evaluate the best players in history, such as Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Charles Barkley and how they contributed to their teams' success. He does the same for some of the NBA's "oddball" players-Manute Bol, Muggsy Bogues, and Dennis Rodman and for the WNBA's top players. Basketball on Paper is unique in its incorporation of business and analytical concepts within the context of basketball to measure the value of players in a cooperative setting. Whether you're looking for strategies or new ideas to throw out while watching the ballgame at a sports bar, Dean Oliver'sBasketball on Paper will give you amazing new insights into teamwork, coaching, and success.

Book The Relationship Between Rebounding and Winning Percentage

Download or read book The Relationship Between Rebounding and Winning Percentage written by Lisa Marie Graber and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed amongst team offensive, defensive, and total rebounds, and the outcome of a game. Women's basketball teams in the N.C.A.A. Division I Big Sky Conference 1996-97 season were the subjects. Few research studies have been conducted on rebounding in basketball, and no research has been completed regarding the women's game. Most coaches believe that rebounding success affects the outcome of basketball games, but definitive research has been done that helps coaches make practice or game decisions based on that information. The researcher believes that the analysis of rebounds is worthy, as it is a statistic that may enhance a team's winning of basketball games. Results of the study for total rebounds indicated that 58 percent of the time when a team out-rebounded their opponent, they won the game. Offensive rebounds indicated that 49 percent of the time when a team out- rebounded their opponent, they won the game. Defensive rebounds showed that 70 percent of the time when a team out-rebounded their opponent, they won the game. Furthermore, the Gaussian distribution showed that rebounding has its greatest effect in games where rebounding was more equal between teams (center of the curve). The number of rebounds, whether offensive, defensive, or total, can be correlated to the number allowed for the defensive team. When a team plays up or down to its competition, that factor may make the difference in whether the team wins or looses [i.e. loses]. Consistency and following a game plan designed to increase performance for a team, or to cause greater errors in the opponent, may make the difference in a game where both teams are equal rebounder's. A team which is inconsistent in its rebounding means that statistics will have little effect on game outcome due to other game variables. Ultimately, the data supported the research hypothesis that the team that has a greater rebounding margin in a specific game is more likely to win.

Book The Effects of Various Statistics on the Outcome of High School State Championship Girl s Basketball

Download or read book The Effects of Various Statistics on the Outcome of High School State Championship Girl s Basketball written by Paul Voorhees and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine what effect various statistical variables had on the probability of winning high school girl's state basketball games. Fifteen statistical factors were selected for investigation and the data were obtained from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association from every state championship game played in 2001. The date from 130 games was statistically evaluated through the use of descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results of the probability analysis determined that teams had a greater probability of winning the games if they: (1) shot a greater field goal percentage (80.00%); (2) shot more field goal attempts (61.54%); (3) shot a greater 3-point percentage (63.08%); (4) shot less 3-point attempts (53.85%); (5) shot a greater free throw percent (57.69); (6) shot more free throw attempts (63.85%); (7) had more offensive rebounds (52.31%); (8) had a greater offensive rebound percentage (63.85%); (9) had more defensive rebounds (63.85%); (10) had a greater defensive rebound percentage (63.85%); (11) had more total rebounds (62.31%); (12) had a greater total rebound percentage (62.31); (13) had less personal fouls (63.85%); (14) had less turnovers (60.77%); and (15) had more steal (58.46). These probabilities were also calculated for each level of classification. The fifteen variables were also correlated to point differential and points scored using Pearson product moment correlation at a .05 level. While many of the variables correlated to both point differential and points scored, the correlations were not meaningful because error variance was over 50% for all of the correlations. Based on the findings of this study, coaches should utilize practice sessions specifically designed to improve field goal shooting percentage, rebounding and the ability to draw fouls and eliminate fouling"--Document.

Book Moneyball The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

Download or read book Moneyball The Art of Winning an Unfair Game written by Michael Lewis and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Lewis’s instant classic may be “the most influential book on sports ever written” (People), but “you need know absolutely nothing about baseball to appreciate the wit, snap, economy and incisiveness of [Lewis’s] thoughts about it” (Janet Maslin, New York Times). One of GQ's 50 Best Books of Literary Journalism of the 21st Century Just before the 2002 season opens, the Oakland Athletics must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players and is written off by just about everyone—but then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. How did one of the poorest teams in baseball win so many games? In a quest to discover the answer, Michael Lewis delivers not only “the single most influential baseball book ever” (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what “may be the best book ever written on business” (Weekly Standard). Lewis first looks to all the logical places—the front offices of major league teams, the coaches, the minds of brilliant players—but discovers the real jackpot is a cache of numbers?numbers!?collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, and physics professors. What these numbers prove is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information had been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland Athletics. He paid attention to those numbers?with the second-lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to?to conduct an astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win . . . how can we not cheer for David?
