Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 3

Download or read book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 3 written by David A. Sullivan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several decades, a significant international research effort has been directed towards understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays a critical role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in numerous individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perforation of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and potentionally pronounced visual disability and blindness.

Book The Epidemiology of Eye Disease 2ed

Download or read book The Epidemiology of Eye Disease 2ed written by Gordon J. Johnson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-05-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large proportion of the world's eye disease is preventable through better education, sanitation and medical therapy. A global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness is being given high prominence by WHO over the next ten years with many countries instigating their own prevention programmes. Interest in this topic is therefore at an all-time high. A timely revision of this established textbook, Epidemiology of Eye Disease provides practising ophthalmologists and public health officials, as well as students enrolled on an increasing number of related Masters Courses, with definitive information on both the epidemiology and prevention of eye disease. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout for the second edition, the content has been enlarged by the addition of new sections on clinical trials, molecular epidemiology and refractive errors. The revision also has a much-enhanced international flavor with many new contributing authors, and reflects the considerable experience gained by the editors through their respective associations with the highly regarded courses run at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The second edition of Epidemiology of Eye Disease continues to be a one-stop source of relevant information derived from all major epidemiological studies on the prevalence, risk factors and distribution of eye disease, to be referred to frequently by students and practitioners in both developed and developing nations.

Book Ophthalmology and the Ageing Society

Download or read book Ophthalmology and the Ageing Society written by Hendrik P.N. Scholl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ageing of the world’s population is one of the major achievements of modern society. By 2050, an estimated 2 billion people will be aged 60 years or over. However, ageing poses major challenges and this is especially true for the field of ophthalmology, given that the major eye diseases – age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataract – predominantly affect the elderly. The challenges facing ophthalmology in an ageing society have not previously been addressed in a comprehensive way, although there are common denominators of the various eye diseases that affect the elderly. This book provides such a comprehensive overview encompassing epidemiology, risk factors, current treatment and prophylaxis, disability, co-morbidity, and the impact on quality of life. World leaders in their respective fields provide state-of-the-art knowledge on the geriatric aspects of ophthalmology that will help to improve the management of this growing patient population.
