Book On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness

Download or read book On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-11-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the evaluation research literature that has accumulated around 19 K-12 mathematics curricula and breaks new ground in framing an ambitious and rigorous approach to curriculum evaluation that has relevance beyond mathematics. The committee that produced this book consisted of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and methodologists who began with the following charge: Evaluate the quality of the evaluations of the thirteen National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported and six commercially generated mathematics curriculum materials; Determine whether the available data are sufficient for evaluating the efficacy of these materials, and if not; Develop recommendations about the design of a project that could result in the generation of more reliable and valid data for evaluating such materials. The committee collected, reviewed, and classified almost 700 studies, solicited expert testimony during two workshops, developed an evaluation framework, established dimensions/criteria for three methodologies (content analyses, comparative studies, and case studies), drew conclusions on the corpus of studies, and made recommendations for future research.

Book Analyses of Eighth Grade Math Texts and Achievement Evaluation Report What Works Clearinghouse Brief Study Report

Download or read book Analyses of Eighth Grade Math Texts and Achievement Evaluation Report What Works Clearinghouse Brief Study Report written by What Works Clearinghouse (ED), Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews a study of the effects of "Saxon Algebra 1/2" on the mathematics achievement of 8th-grade students and a comparison of textbook content between the intervention and comparison curricula (Crawford & Raia, 1986). Crawford and Raia conducted three analyses with different subsets of the overall sample, but only one analysis is reviewed in this study report. In this matched sample, math achievement of 8th-grade students participating in the "Saxon Algebra 1/2" (intervention) classrooms was compared to math achievement of 8th-grade students participating in Scott-Foresman Mathematics (comparison) classrooms. This report summarizes the study and reviews its strengths and weaknesses.

Download or read book Analyses of Eighth Grade Math Texts and Achievement Evaluation Report What Works Clearinghouse Detailed Study Report written by What Works Clearinghouse (ED), Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evaluation was designed to compare student achievement scores of students enrolled in Saxon Algebra 1/2 classrooms (intervention group) with students enrolled in Scott-Foresman Mathematics classrooms (comparison group). Crawford and Raia conducted three analyses, but this study report focuses on the strongest analysis of the three and describes how Saxon Algebra 1/2 compared to the comparison text only for those teachers who taught both textbooks in a sample of students matched on pretest California Achievement Test (CAT) total math scores.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Consequences presents a perspective on US mathematics and science education that is developed from data gathered as part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). TIMSS is the most extensive and far-reaching cross-national comparative study of mathematics and science education ever attempted. It includes comparing official curricula, textbooks, teacher practices, and student achievements for many countries (from 20 to 50 countries, depending on the particular comparison). Thousands of official documents and textbooks were analyzed. Thousands of teachers, principals, and other experts responded to survey questionnaires. A sample of mathematics teachers in three countries had their lessons videotaped. Hundreds of thousands of children in almost 50 countries were tested in mathematics and science. This report presents a closer look at US mathematics and science education through careful examination of TIMSS data. The authors believe this investigation shows how deceptive many often unquestioned assumptions about American education can be. Drawing upon many new analyses not previously reported and integrating these with previous analyses of TIMSS data, the authors develop and illustrate the argument that what happens to American students is the consequence of American beliefs that shape educational practice and the accretion of a myriad educational choices made in mathematics and science education.

Book Saxon Math What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report

Download or read book Saxon Math What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report written by What Works Clearinghouse (ED) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Saxon Math" is a textbook series covering grades K-12 based on incremental development and continual review of mathematical concepts to give students time to learn and practice concepts throughout the year. A distinguishing feature of "Saxon Math" is its use of a distributed approach--spreading practice and instruction for any single math content strand across the course of the entire instructional year--as opposed to a chapter-based approach for instruction and assessment. The program is built on the premise that students learn best when instruction is incremental and explicit, previously learned concepts are continually reviewed, and assessment is frequent and cumulative. At each grade level, math concepts are introduced, reviewed, and practiced over time in order to move students from understanding to fluency. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) High School Math topic area reviewed eight studies on "Saxon Math". One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards with reservations; the remaining seven studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on the one study, the WWC found no discernible effects on math achievement for high school students. The conclusions presented in this report may change as new research emerges. Appendices include: (1) Study characteristics: Abrams, 1989; (2) Outcome measures for the math achievement domain; (3) Summary of study findings included in the rating for the math achievement domain; (4) Summary of subtest findings for the math achievement domain; (5) "Saxon Math" rating for the math achievement domain; and (6) Extent of evidence by domain. (Contains 6 footnotes.).
