Book The influence of surface films on mechanical properties

Download or read book The influence of surface films on mechanical properties written by Heinz G. F. Wilsdorf and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variables that influence the mechanical behavior of metals covered with thin films have been enumerated. In particular, factors affecting dislocation glide in the surface region have been characterized in terms of image stresses taking into account both the free surface and the accommodation dislocation network at the substrate-film interface. A reduction of yield stress of 50% or more was measured on copper crystals electro-plated with 600 A films of nickel, gold or alpha-brass, all of which are epitaxial overgrowths. The complexity of the microstructure in the substrate-thin film composite has been described and the consequences on dislocation glide explored. An example of a system which exhibits an increase of the critical resolved yield stress, tau sub y, is given. Here, diffusion layers less than 1 micrometer thick caused tau sub y to increase by a factor of two, a consequence of the hindering of glide dislocations by accommodation dislocation networks.

Book Surfaces and Interfaces II

Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces II written by John Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgical Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific corr.munity. This volume, Surfaces and Interfaces ll: Physical and Mechanical Properties, can be considered a continuation, or perhaps an extension, of the information contained in Surfaces and Interfaces I: Chemical and Physical Characteristics. The emphasis in this volume is focused on: the technological significance of surfaces and interfaces; surface sensitive mechanical properties; environment-sensitive properties; control of grain structure; and composite materials. It is felt that the rather ambitious undertaking of the program committee to place the role of "surfaces and interfaces" in its proper context has been achieved. The balance between basic research findings and more applied research allows the reader a certain degree of latitude in the use of the two volumes. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Col. C. T. Riordan, Commanding Officer, Dr. E. Scala, Technical Di rector, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center is appreciated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book can be viewed as a scientific investigation combined with methodological studies. For practical reasons each of the methods is described in the following general manner including: the uses and the scientific investigation tasks; methods of sampling; testing equipment; test preparation; tests; data processing; controversial issues and conclusions. Each of the 37 methods contains a range of 1 to 8 variants. As far as we know, the book is the first publication in the field.

Book Surface Effects in Crystal Plasticity

Download or read book Surface Effects in Crystal Plasticity written by R.M. Latanision and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977-03-31 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Keats, writing to Fanny Brawne [1], said "I long to believe in immortality ••••• I wish to believe in immortality - I wish to live with you forever". So much of this talk will be concerned with the ductile behaviour of crystals, plasticity in its narrower sense. We shall consider a crystal which is deforming by slip, and shall expose a surface in this crystal. We first think of the sur face as a simple mathematical cut along a low-index plane. Then we allow for the relaxation of the newly-exposed atoms, and for surface irregularities, and we consider the effect of lattice va cancies which can enter at the surface. We consider the effect of dissolving off the surface layers, either intermittently or contin uously. Then the effects of adsorption or oxidation by normal con stituents of the atmosphere must be considered, the effects of sur face alloying, and finally those of special surface-active agents. But "All/Life death does end and each day dies with sleep" [2], and plasticity in its broader sense includes the fracture ~'1hich term inates flow. Here there is a bewildering array of effects. The medium in which the crystal flows may enhance its ductility enor mously, or it may cause it to break almost without plastic deform ation, or under a load which it has already supported.
