Though not often intentional in nature, these microaggressive behaviors have become pervasive in the lives of people of color (Sue, 2010; Sue, Capodilupo, et al., 2007). Extant research reveals the harmful and cumulative effects of racial microaggressions (Sue, Nadal, et al., 2008). Researchers have also found a link between the experiences of African American students and negative psychological, health, and educational outcomes (Solórzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000; Sue, 2010; Watkins, Labarrie, & Appio, 2010). Much research has been done on people of color's experiences with racial microaggressions; however, few studies have given attention to why some African American college students are able to excel in microaggressive academic environments while others do not. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent African American students at a predominantly White institution experience racial microaggression in the classroom as well as the frequency with which various types of microaggressions are encountered. A secondary purpose was to identify if there is a relationship between microaggressive encounters and academic outcomes. The final purpose was to explore whether racial identity status moderates the relationship between microaggressions and academic outcomes. Forty-seven undergraduate students participated in this study. Results indicated that students' backgrounds impact how they handle microaggressive behaviors. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of racism has been a growing social-issue and continues today. This study examines the antecedences, moderators, and consequences of perceived racism to better understand this phenomenon and help reduce its negative consequences. Specifically, we investigated how perceived racism including discrimination and microaggressions influence students' academic achievement, stress and somatic symptoms. We also examined the effect the participant's personal racial identity as a possible antecedence for perceived racism, and self-esteem as a mediator and moderator. A self-reported survey study (n=329) was conducted using undergraduates including Latino American, African American, and Caucasian American students. Correlation analysis, mediation test, moderation test and path analysis were conducted to examine the proposed model. Results found that more perceived racism was associated with higher stress levels, more somatic symptoms, and less academic achievement. Specifically, microaggressions had a direct effect on all outcome measures, whereas discrimination's effect is indirect via reducing self-esteem. It is worth mentioning that racial identity was found to have two opposite impacts-a dominant positive effect by promoting self-esteem and a minor negative effect by perceiving more microaggression. Self-esteem was also found to have both positive impact and negative impact-a major direct positive effect on all outcome measures and a minor negative effect by aggravating the negative impact of microaggression on academic achievement. In sum, this study implies that racism especially microaggression harms individuals in many aspects; racial identity and self-esteem are protective factors to counteract its negative impact. These findings help reveal the mechanism of how racism is perceived and evolves, and provide suggestions to reduce its negative consequences in the future.

Book excerpt: As the nation becomes more multicultural, more research has inquired into the identity development of diverse individuals through their racial identity. The presence of racism and microaggressions presents an interesting obstacle in underrepresented groups' identity development. Microaggressions, which are ambiguous slights toward a member of a minority group, have become more prevalent in society and have caused a shift in how victims of these aggressions cope and integrate these experiences into their racial identity. Much research has focused on how these daily insults affect health in terms of lower life expectancy, however there is a lack of research regarding how individuals cope with these experiences and incorporate them into their racial identity. The purpose of this study is to determine how individuals cope and grow in their racial identity through the examination of racism narratives. Because narrative storytelling is a powerful factor in individuals' identity development, this study analyzed 46 African American and Hispanic American racism narratives on 4 narrative constructs: elaboration, coping, effects of racism, and growth. These narrative constructs were coded and correlated with the following questionnaires: Bicultural Integration Scale, the Cross Ethnic/Racial Identity scale, and the Identity Distress Scale. Results showed that individuals who showed more depth, growth, and positive coping in their narratives had more positive perceptions of their racial identity and more mature identity development. These findings indicate the importance of narrating traumatic racial experiences for African American and Hispanic American students as part of the coping process that allows growth from racist experiences.

Book excerpt: Racial microaggressions are subtle verbal, behavioral, and environmental racial slights occurring in the everyday lives of minorities that are frequently associated with negative mental health outcomes (e.g., depression, anxiety). This study explored the potential buffering and explicative effects of Black racial identity and spirituality on the mental health outcomes (psychological well-being and coping) of African American undergraduate and graduate students who experienced racial microaggressions. Results of the study found that five of the six subtypes of racial microaggressions, excluding Denial of Individual Racism, were negatively correlated with an Acceptance form of coping, while racial microaggression subtypes Ascription of Intelligence, Assumption of Criminality, and Assumed Superiority of White Culture were positively correlated with Negative Affect. Spirituality was not found to act as a buffer. However, the racial identity profile Pre-encounter Self-Hate (PSH) was found to mediate the relationship between the racial microaggression subtype Myth of Meritocracy and Negative Affect. Women utilized self-distraction to cope with racial microaggressions more than their male counterparts. Overall, this study draws attention to specific racial microaggression subtypes that are particularly salient for Black students in higher education. Findings also suggest further research to understand (1) the impact of microaggressions on Black graduate students and (2) possible protective factors for Black students at Christian Colleges who experience racial microaggressions. Book excerpt: The negative psychological consequences of racial prejudice and discrimination in the lives of African Americans have been well documented. Recently, researchers have investigated how racial identity status attitudes may influence the perception of discrimination (i.e., it has been suggested that racial identity may act as a buffer against experiencing negative affect as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination). While this hypothesis has received increased attention in the literature of late, current studies testing said hypothesis have not examined this association by using the recent advances in the conceptualization of subtle discrimination (i.e., microaggressions). As such, the purpose of this study was to examine whether racial identity status attitudes moderate the relationship between perceived discrimination (quantified using the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale) and psychological functioning. A secondary hypothesis was that racial identity would mediate the relationship between racial socialization and psychological functioning. The study recruited 153 African American participants from undergraduate psychology courses at a medium sized Midwestern university. We found that racial identity attitudes moderated the association between the experience of microaggressions and endorsing symptoms of general psychological distress. Additionally, racial identity was found to partially mediate the association between racial socialization and psychological functioning.

Book excerpt: African Americans remain underrepresented in higher education (Thompson, Gorin, & Chen, 2006) and experience subtle forms of racism called microaggressions (Sue et. al, 2007). The impact of microaggressions in post-secondary institutions may manifest in the achievement gaps that exist between African American and White people; moreover, they may influence the inequitable treatment of African American students by staff, teaching assistants and faculty (Ancis, Sedlacek, & Mohr, 2000; Becker & Luther, 2002). 108 African American undergraduate students at three Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) participated. The current study employed an online survey to explore relationships of microaggressions, racial/ethnic socialization, African American racial identity, academic motivation, and mattering of African American students at PWIs, including moderating relationships. Generally, results demonstrated the following significant relationships: experiences of microaggressions were negatively related to a sense of belonging on campus and the belief that instructors were invested in their success; feeling valued on campus was significantly related to experiences of microaggressions; receiving racial stereotype messages about the cynicism of white people was negatively related to the perception that they mattered to instructors; receiving messages of racial protection and cultural insight was positively related to experiences of microaggressions. There were a number of significant relationships between mattering and intrinsic and extrinsic academic motivation. Of particular interest was a negative relationship between amotivation, mattering to instructors, and students perception that they do not belong on campus. Intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation was positively related to microaggresisons. Students' belief that others on campus regarded their culture positively was negatively associated with microaggressions Students' highly held regard for their African descent was positively associated with microaggressions. Moreover, Black Identity Nationalist Ideology significantly moderated the negative relationship between microaggresisons and mattering to instructors. The findings of the current study are an important contribution to the existing literature regarding the experiences of African American college students at PWIs. Recommendations based on the results of the current study are provided for administrators and clinicians who work with African American college students.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the occurrence of racial microaggressions on a predominantly White, Midwestern university, as well as their relationship to self-esteem, stress, and racial identity. A sample of 40 students who identified as African or African/American, Hispanic, Multiracial, or Asian, Pacific Islander, or Asian/American completed the Multi-group Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Racial Microaggression Scale, and a demographic information form. The results suggest that, while no significant relationship was found between microaggressions and self-esteem, students reported frequently experiencing microaggressions on campus, as well as stress related to these events.

Book excerpt: Multiracial individuals are often perceived to hold a unique perspective of the world because they have to manage multiple racial identities. The purpose of this study is to further examine how multiracial individuals manage their multiple racial identities and to explore the unique perspective they have on societal issues. In particular, this study explored the relationships of racial self-categorization, racial identity integration, cognitive processes, and attitudes towards racial issues and diversity amongst part-White multiracial individuals. Additionally, the study explored how multiracial individuals' socioeconomic status relates to these cognitive mechanisms and diversity attitudes. Through online advertisements and personal connections, a large sample (N = 809) of part-White multiracial adults was recruited throughout the United States. Several statistical analyses were used to test the hypotheses: MANOVA/ANOVA, multiple regression, correlational analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results indicated that among part-White individuals, (a) self-categorization predicted racial identity integration, cognitive processes, and attitudes toward racial issues and diversity (Hypothesis 1); (b) racial identity integration and cognitive processes had an effect on attitudes toward racial and diversity issues (Hypothesis 2); (c) cognitive processes mediated the relationships between racial identity integration and attitudes toward racial and diversity issues (Hypothesis 3); and (d) cognitive flexibility, dialectical self-views, and racial identity integration were intercorrelated (Hypothesis 4). Lastly, multiracial individuals' education attainment and family's SES during upbringing had varying effects on their perception of racial and diversity-related issues. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive framework to describe the lived experiences of multiracial individuals living in the United States. Implications for clinical practice and future multiracial research are discussed.
