This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developmental stage of adolescence is a difficult time for young people, particularly girls. Research shows that girls often struggle during this period with low self-esteem, a lack of confidence, depression, and poor body image. Outdoor adventure programming has several positive outcomes, including providing adolescent girls with authentic experiences that allow them to challenge themselves, build connections with others, and develop life tools to overpower the negative societal influences of genders stereotypes and unrealistic pressures. Numerous studies confirm these outcomes. However, most of these studies looked at programs that lasted a few days to several weeks. Due to the importance of improving adolescent development for girls, this study examined the impacts of long-term exposure to outdoor adventure programming for adolescent girls. The injury employs a qualitative analysis to share the stories of 8th-grade students at the French Broad River Academy for girls. This private middle school utilizes outdoor education regularly. Students reflected on what outdoor adventure programming meant to them during their 2.5 years at the school. They did this over a semester by taking pictures of their outdoor experiences on disposable cameras. At the conclusion of the semester, students used photo-elicitation to share their experiences by using their photos to share their stories in focus group interviews. Emergent themes from the focus groups included: Relationship & Community, Perseverance & Resiliency, Enjoyment & Finding Beauty in Nature, Leadership & Confidence, and Individual Growth.

Book Extended Effects of Participation in a Semester long Outdoor Leadership Training Program

Download or read book Extended Effects of Participation in a Semester long Outdoor Leadership Training Program written by Molly M. Staley and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many adventure programs offer opportunities to develop technical and outdoor skills such as orienteering, rope management, and backpacking skills (Shooter, Sibthorp, & Paisley, 2009) research has demonstrated that participating in an adventure program often results in the development of interpersonal skills such as communication, decision-making, and problem solving (McKenzie, 2003; Raiola, 2003; Sibthorp, Paisley, & Gookin, 2007). Interpersonal skills are beneficial to both personal and professional development and can translate into success in the classroom and the workplace (Gass, Garvey, & Sugerman, 2003; Shooter, Sibthorp, & Paisley, 2009). However, the long-term retention of technical and interpersonal skills as a result of participating in an adventure program has received limited research attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of participation in the CORE program at IU through a longitudinal analysis. Specifically, the aim of this study was to analyze the retention of technical and interpersonal skills, and attitudes of past CORE program participants and identify the impact these skills have on areas such as personal and professional development. The CORE Program is a unique outdoor adventure and education program that blends classroom learning and fieldwork to provide its participants with a broad range of experiential learning opportunities. The past research done on the CORE program has typically examined the effects of the program immediately after its conclusion. This study adopted a self-administered retrospective pre-post questionnaire that asked CORE alumni to reflect and rate their skill level on a 5-point Likert scale on three time points: before participation in CORE, right after completion of the CORE program and their current level of skills. Skills examined included technical skills such as knots, climbing, and orienteering and interpersonal skills such as problem solving, group management, and decision-making. The results of this study contributed to a better understanding the impacts and outcomes of the CORE program.

Book The Effect of High School Outdoor based Adventure Leadership Programs in Independent Schools on Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Contol

Download or read book The Effect of High School Outdoor based Adventure Leadership Programs in Independent Schools on Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Contol written by Jeremy W. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment-based research project examined whether an independent high school outdoor leadership program can effect a change within an adolescent, using the constructs of life effectiveness and locus of control to measure for that effect. Research participants were drawn from Albuquerque Academy, an independent high school that has semester-long outdoor leadership classes, using those students not enrolled in these classes as a comparison. While both of these groups had a small, but statistically significant, increase in life effectiveness the differences between the groups was not significant. There were statistically significant changes in the subscales of active involvement, leadership ability, quality seeking, self-confidence, self-efficacy, social effectiveness, and stress management. For a second analysis, three groups were compared: an Outdoor Leadership Group, an Other Leadership Group, and a Non-Leadership Group. The Outdoor Leadership Group had higher post-test scores than the Non-Leadership Group in the areas of active involvement, cooperative teamwork, self-confidence, and social effectiveness. Both the Outdoor Leadership Group and the Other Leadership Groups reported a higher mean score than the Non-Leadership Group in the pre-test and the post-test in the areas of leadership ability.

Book International Guide to Student Achievement

Download or read book International Guide to Student Achievement written by John Hattie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Guide to Student Achievement brings together and critically examines the major influences shaping student achievement today. There are many, often competing, claims about how to enhance student achievement, raising the questions of "What works?" and "What works best?" World-renowned bestselling authors, John Hattie and Eric M. Anderman have invited an international group of scholars to write brief, empirically-supported articles that examine predictors of academic achievement across a variety of topics and domains. Rather than telling people what to do in their schools and classrooms, this guide simply provides the first-ever compendium of research that summarizes what is known about the major influences shaping students’ academic achievement around the world. Readers can apply this knowledge base to their own school and classroom settings. The 150+ entries serve as intellectual building blocks to creatively mix into new or existing educational arrangements and aim for quick, easy reference. Chapter authors follow a common format that allows readers to more seamlessly compare and contrast information across entries, guiding readers to apply this knowledge to their own classrooms, their curriculums and teaching strategies, and their teacher training programs.

Book Behavior and Group Management in Outdoor Adventure Education

Download or read book Behavior and Group Management in Outdoor Adventure Education written by Alan Ewert and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outdoor adventure activities are becoming an increasingly popular part of physical education programs. The physical risks of these activities are often foremost in the minds of both instructors and participants, yet it is managing group behavior which can prove to be the most difficult. This is the first book for students and practitioners to address this essential aspect of outdoor adventure education (OAE). Outlining key evidence-based training practices, this book explains how to interact with groups ranging from adolescents to military veterans within a variety of outdoor adventure education contexts. It provides practical advice on how to promote positive behavior, while also offering guidance on how to mitigate negative behavior and manage a variety of challenging behavioral issues. With ten chapters full of real world examples from rock climbing to wilderness trekking, it provides a comprehensive guide to understanding the complexities of behavioral group management (BGM) in theory and practice. This book is vital reading for students training to be outdoor physical education instructors and for practitioners looking to enhance their group management skills.
