Nigel’s research passion was in understanding the mechanistic effects of exercise for health and therapy with a special interest in insulin resistance and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the leading cause of anovulatory infertility in young women of reproductive age. He was the co-Deputy Director - Research Training at the Institute of Health and Sport (IHeS) at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia and held adjunct associate professorial roles at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. He was Chair of the Exercise and Sports Science Association (ESSA) Research Committee, Project Director of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS) and an active member of the Australian Physiological Society (AuPS). Alongside his influential research career and leadership roles, Nigel was a strong advocate for postgraduate and early career researchers. His collaborative nature and approach to research ensured those mentored by him were considered, included and valued members across his many research projects and initiatives. Nigel’s impact and influence on the careers of early researchers will continue at Victoria University with both a Nigel Stepto Travel Award and Nigel Stepto PhD Scholarship established in his honour. Nigel was great friend and colleague to many who is very much missed. Nigel is survived by his wife, Fiona and two children Matilda (14 years) and Harriet (11 years). Book excerpt: In consideration of the rising prevalence of obesity and its effect on metabolic health and disease, this study was conducted to examine mechanisms involved in adipose tissue function following an acute bout of exercise in abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue. Sedentary, overweight/obese women (n=10, BMI=30.6+6.0 kg·m-2, VO2peak=30.3+5.4 m·Lkg-1·min-1)completed 2 visits to the lab in which they either exercised for 1 hour or a rested in bed for the equivalent time (control). Experiments were executed randomly using a randomized cross-over study design. Gas exchange measures were measured at three time points before biopsies and subcutaneous adipose biopsies were obtained pre-condition, immediately after condition (0hr), two hours post (2hr), and four hours post (4hr). Acute exercise had significant effects whole body fat oxidation and phosphorylation of insulin signalling proteins, but had no effect on the phosphorylation of proteins regulating the expression of glyceroneogenic genes. In combination, these results suggest that acute exercise can transiently decrease insulin signalling although the mechanism by which this occurs is unclear. Additionally, acute exercise had no effect on the phosphorylation of proteins that are thought to regulate glyceroneogenic gene expression, suggesting that there are either alternative mechanisms involved or that time since the consumption of a meal is a greater stimulus for the activation/upregulation of glyceroneogenesis. Our findings suggest that acute exercise may acutely alter function of adipose tissue such that it contributes to elevations in whole body fatty acid metabolism, however, whether or not chronic adaptations are induced remains an important area for future study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) is a dynamic organ that has a tremendous ability to remodel in the face of increased energy intake. In obesity, alterations to SAT may lead to metabolic dysfunction and increased risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Decrements in SAT mitochondrial function and the adipogenic capacity of SAT have been identified in previous investigations in obese humans. However, exercise training has been shown to improve metabolic function partly due to changes in SAT function. In this dissertation report we investigated the effects of an aerobic interval training (AIT) exercise intervention in obese humans and its ability to modulate SAT function. The first main objective of the study was to delineate the impact of AIT on the mitochondrial content and function in SAT. The second main objective was to characterize the effects of AIT on the adipogenic capacity of preadipocytes isolated from SAT. AIT was effective at increasing complex I-linked mitochondrial oxygen consumption rates in lower but not upper body SAT independent of changes to mitochondrial content. Increased complex I-linked flux may indicate an increased ability to oxidize fuels that may provide cytoprotection to adipocytes. Additionally, AIT reduced the adipogenic capacity in preadipocytes isolated from SAT. This finding may help explain the ability of exercise to prevent weight gain and weight regain after weight loss.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed.
