Book The Effects of Computer assisted Instruction on Student Learning of Fractions in Middle School Mathematics

Download or read book The Effects of Computer assisted Instruction on Student Learning of Fractions in Middle School Mathematics written by Rebecca Love Palculict and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s increasingly technologically-driven classroom, exploring whether computer-assisted instruction ensures students gain critical mathematic skills is an important area of study. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of computer-assisted instruction in learning manipulation of fractions. This study used archival data collected in August 2021 (pre-test) and January 2022 (post-test). Sixty-nine fifth-grade students in a middle school in rural Mississippi were participants in the study. This quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design analyzed data from the i-Ready diagnostic using an Analysis of Covariance. Results indicated a significant difference between the post-test scores of students who received interventions and those who did not receive interventions when controlling for the pre-test scores. Results indicated that computer-based interventions have a significant impact on student learning. Further research is recommended to explore the impact across grade levels.

Book Computer assisted Instruction in an Urban School Setting

Download or read book Computer assisted Instruction in an Urban School Setting written by Leanne Howell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation study was to investigate a specific computer-assisted instructional software, Study Hall 101, in fifth-grade science. The study was conducted on an urban, elementary school campus in a northeastern school district in Texas. A mixed-methods approach was utilized in an attempt to understand two teachers' perceptions about its use in fifth-grade science and evaluate its impact on fifth-grade students' attitudes toward science. The first inquiry employed a qualitative research design in an attempt to understand teachers' perceptions towards the use of Study Hall 101. Data collection methods used in this study included interviews, focus groups, and electronic-mail (e-mail) responses to open-ended sentence stems. Four favorable themes emerged from teachers' responses: (1) students' attitudes toward science, (2) students' participation in science class discussions, (3) content individualization, and (4) students' engagement. Teachers' frustrations also emerged into themes: (1) time constraints, (2) technology glitches, and (3) specific design elements. The second inquiry employed a quantitative research design in an attempt to investigate the impact of Study Hall 101 on seventy fifth-grade students' attitudes toward science after an eight-week period. The Modified Attitudes Toward Science Inventory (mATSI) was used for data collection and was administered to students on two occasions, before and after treatment. Results indicated no statistically significant change in fifth-grade students' overall attitudes toward science as a result of its use; however, two statistically significant findings did occur when data were analyzed across attribute variables of gender, ethnicity, and economic status, as well as specific domains within the mATSI. First, the use of Study Hall 101 was associated with males' and females' attitudes in opposite ways in regard to one domain of the mATSI: self-concept toward science. Second, students in the control group experienced a decline in another attitude domain of the mATSI: desire to do science. The results of this study contribute to the field of K-12 education as we search for effective educational tools to reach diverse student populations. This study concludes that teachers' perceptions of this software are favorable and that its use in fifth-grade science should be considered as a tool to engage students in their own learning process.

Book Effect of Computer aided Instruction on Attitude and Achievement of Fifth Grade Math Students

Download or read book Effect of Computer aided Instruction on Attitude and Achievement of Fifth Grade Math Students written by Traci Shoemaker and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group study was to test theories of constructivism and motivation, along with research-based teaching practices of differentiating instruction and instructing within a child's Zone of Proximal Development, in measuring the effect of computer-aided instruction on fifth grade students' attitude and achievement in math. Students in Pennsylvania completed an attitude survey at the beginning, middle, and end of the study (Pierce, Stacey & Barkatsas, 2007). Achievement was measured by the 4Sight Math assessment (Pennsylvania State Education Association, 2007) which was given at the beginning of the study, after the first seven weeks of instruction, and then at the end of the study. Five fifth grade teachers were randomly assigned as treatment or control, indicating which instructional strategy they would implement. Treatment groups received traditional direct instruction and guided practice, and then computer-aided instruction as a supplemental math practice session. Control groups participated in traditional instruction and guided practice, which incorporated Interactive Whiteboards, with only traditional methods used for supplemental practice. Data from the attitude survey were used to indicate changes that students showed after using the computer for practice as compared to using traditional methods of practice. Data from the 4Sight Math assessments were used to determine any changes in achievement after each method was implemented. Results determined that computer-aided instruction did not have a significant effect on student achievement, but did positively impact the attitude of low-achievers.

Book The Effects of Computer assisted Instruction on the Mathematics Achievement of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

Download or read book The Effects of Computer assisted Instruction on the Mathematics Achievement of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders written by Kenya Collier Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is essential in everyday life activities and most educational opportunities and careers require mathematical knowledge, thus it is vital that students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) receive sufficient instruction that leads to proficiency in the subject. Performing poorly in mathematics can result in dire future outcomes. This is particularly true for students with EBD, who already experience significant difficulties throughout and after their educational career. While studies have documented the academic and behavioral problems of students with EBD, not until recently have studies begun to concentrate on academic interventions that may aid in preventing some of the academic challenges these students face. It is of great importance that researchers continue to identify effective and efficient strategies of providing academic instruction, particularly in mathematics, to students with EBD. The current study examined the extent to which a technology-based intervention was effective in math instruction for students with EBD. In addition, to address the social/behavioral issues typically prevalent in students with EBD, students' task engagement was also examined and a social validity survey was used to examine their attitudes toward mathematics and technology-based instruction. A single-subject multiple-probe design across six participants was selected for this study. The computer-assisted instruction (CAI) intervention, I CAN Learn computer software program, was implemented in a high school mathematics classroom. The overall results of the study indicated that the intervention improved the adolescents' mathematics achievement, but findings revealed that the intervention was more effective with some participants than others. In addition, results indicated that the intervention may not be associated with the participants' task engagement. The study's social validity survey showed that the participants had varying attitudes toward mathematics and CAI at the end of the study.
