Book The Philosophy of Education of William Torrey Harris in the Annual Reports

Download or read book The Philosophy of Education of William Torrey Harris in the Annual Reports written by Peter M. Collins and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intertwining careers of William Torrey Harris (1835-1909) converge in twelve of the Annual Reports of the Board of Directors for St. Louis Public Schools. Harris formulated most of the essential features of these twelve reports as the Superintendent of Schools from 1867 to 1869. These particular reports--which have been acclaimed nationally and internationally--are said to be among the most valuable official publications in American educational literature. They are far different from the descriptive documents originally intended by their author. This study demonstrates that Harris provided an authentic philosophy of education, a set of interrelated philosophical principles and their applications to educational problems. The substance of Harris's philosophy of education is focused upon a broadly based philosophical anthropology in relationship primarily to the purposes, curriculum, and teaching methods in intellectual, moral, and religious education.

Book The Origins of American Philosophy of Education

Download or read book The Origins of American Philosophy of Education written by Joseph James Chambliss and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dewey once wrote: "Education is such an important interest of life that . . . we should expect to find a philosophy of education, just as there is a philosophy of art and of religion. We should expect, that is, such a treatment of the subject as would show that the nature of existence renders education an integral and indispensable function of life. " Indeed, such treatments of education are at least as old as Plato's Republic. Even so, it was not until the nineteenth century that the philosophy of education was recognized as a distinct discipline. His torically, it has been one thing to treat education in such a manner as Dewey mentions; it has been another thing to do so while deliberately making explicit a discipline with a subject matter which is in some sense distinct from that of other disciplines. The aim, in the present study, has been to study the origins of philosophy of education as a distinct discipline in the United States. In doing so, "origins" are taken to mean, first, that from which the disci pline has come, and second, that which initiates, serves as a point of departure for what follows. In searching for origins, I have explored the philosophic considerations of education from which came those distinct conceptions of the philosophy of education that were to serve as points of departure for later considerations of the discipline.

Book The Messianic Character of American Education

Download or read book The Messianic Character of American Education written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rushdoony's study tells us an important part of American history: exactly what has public education been trying to accomplish? Before the 1830s and Horace Mann, no schools in the U.S. were state supported or state controlled. They were local, parent-teacher enterprises, supported without taxes, and taking care of all children. They were remarkably high in standard and were Christian. From Mann to the present, the state has used education to socialize the child. The school's basic purpose, according to its own philosophers, is not education in the traditional sense of the 3 R's. Instead, it is to promote "democracy" and "equality," not in their legal or civic sense, but in terms of the engineering of a socialized citizenry. Public education became the means of creating a social order of the educators design. Such men saw themselves and the school in messianic terms. This book was instrumental in launching the Christian school and homeschool movements.

Book William Torrey Harris s Contributions to the Professionalization of Teaching

Download or read book William Torrey Harris s Contributions to the Professionalization of Teaching written by Nicole Ard Everette and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: A gap in historical research was determined and a historiography was conducted to answer this research question: How did William Torrey Harris help to elevate the professionalization of teaching? Harris held multiple educational positions throughout his fortyeight year career and contributed to the professionalization of teaching within each post. As a teacher and principal, Harris functioned as an active member of multiple local and national level teachers' associations and organizations to promote education. He initiated the graded system into schools, increased opportunities for African American teachers, and wrote the memorial which helped to establish Kirksville Normal School. As Assistant Superintendent, Harris conducted numerous school visits and provided feedback to teachers. The introduction of Leigh's Phonetic System improved reading instruction and the increase of German instruction elevated both student and teacher enrollment. Harris's foundation and publication of the Journal of Speculative Philosophy (JSP) added philosophic thought into teachers' lives. During his Superintendence, Harris published key educational pieces containing specific advice for teachers. Harris's annual reports contained evidence of communication and endeavors he made to improve the education of future teachers, current educators, as well as students. Work within the Concord School of Philosophy and as editor of the International Education Series (IES) were additional platforms Harris utilized to share effective techniques and strategies with countless educators. Throughout Harris's post as the U's. Commissioner of Education, his continued effort to professionalize teaching was evident. His work with normal schools, encouragement of communication between libraries and schools, committee involvement, and additional publications were the culmination of lifelong efforts he made to improve the teaching profession.
