Book Social Advantage and Disadvantage

Download or read book Social Advantage and Disadvantage written by Hartley Dean and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social advantage and disadvantage are potent catch-all terms. They have no established definition but, considered in relation to one another, they can embrace a wide variety of more specific concepts that address the ways in which human society causes, exacerbates or fails to prevent social divisions or injustices. This book captures the sense in which any conceptualisation of disadvantage is concerned with the consequences of processes by which relative advantage has been selectively conferred or attained. It considers how inequalities and social divisions are created as much by the concentration of advantage among the best-off as by the systematic disadvantage of the worst-off. The book critically discusses - from a global and a UK perspective - a spectrum of conceptual frameworks and ideas relating to poverty, social exclusion, capability deprivation, rights violations, social immobility, and human or social capital deficiency. It addresses advantage and disadvantage from a life course perspective through discussions of family and childhood, education, work, old age, and the dynamics of income and wealth. It considers cross-cutting divides that are implicated in the social construction and maintenance of advantage and disadvantage, including divisions premised on gender, 'race', ethnicity, migration and religion, neighbourhood and the experience of crime.

Book Economic Life Course Analysis of Peacekeeping Deployment in the Sinai

Download or read book Economic Life Course Analysis of Peacekeeping Deployment in the Sinai written by Hyder Lakhani and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report has two objectives. The first objective is to estimate the extent of financial gains or losses of Active Component (AC) and Reserve Component (RC) soldiers for the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) peacekeeping mission in the Sinai. The second objective is to estimate the effect of these gains/losses on soldiers' intentions to remain in their respective component until retirement. Data for a population of approximately 500 soldiers were collected during their predeployment training at Fort Bragg, NC and during deployment at the South Camp in the Sinai. Results of these analyses revealed that AC soldiers perceived a small financial loss ($102 per month) and RC soldiers perceived considerable financial gain ($335 per month). Therefore, soldiers experienced net average financial gains ($233 per month). Regression results for change in financial status revealed that civilian earnings were negatively related to financial gains of the RC. Regression results for career commitment revealed that the soldiers' likelihood of staying in their respective component until retirement increased with financial gains, while statistically controlling for satisfaction with Army life and demographic variables."--DTIC.

This book answers these important questions in practical terms and discusses in detail the instructional needs of students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and other significant disorders that affect learning. Peter Westwood draws on international research literature to provide supporting evidence of best practices. The book is unique in linking the teaching methods recommended for overcoming learning problems directly to each of the three tiers of support in the Response-to-Intervention Model. It presents examples of effective whole-class teaching, intensive small group instruction and individual tutoring, as well as addressing key topics such as: educational progress of students with learning disorders; principles for teaching dyslexic students; difficulties with writing and spelling; developing students’ numeracy skills; specific intervention strategies; nonverbal learning disabilities. Learning Disorders will be of interest to practising teachers, trainee teachers, teaching assistants, educational psychologists, school counsellors and parents. It will also provide valuable insights for any school planning to upgrade its support system for students with special educational needs.
