This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) is the seventh most important food crop among the root and tuber crops grown in the world which is widely cultivated in tropic, sub tropic and warmer temperate regions. A wide variation exists among sweet potato varieties. The molecular markers Is an important genetic diversity analysis tool for enhancing duplicates identification. The samples were collected based on an elaborative iterative survey as well as traditional knowledge from local people. Thirteen different varieties Ipomoea batatas Lam. varieties (Kuravanpady 1, Kuravanpady 2, Jellipara 1, Jellipara 2, Kottathara, Kadanadu, Kanaka, Aruna, Kanjagad, Cherukizhangu 1, Cherukizhangu 2, Thodupuzha. Palakkad) were used for morphological characterization. Morphological data were collected 60 days after planting based on the descriptors for sweet potato (IBPGR, 1991) in all the 13 samples. The variable scored were twining, plant type, ground cover, vine inter node, vine pigmentation, vine tip pubescence, mature leaf shape, mature leaf size, abaxial leaf vein pigmentation, foliage colour, petiole length, petiole pigmentation, storage root and skin colour. Molecular characterization could be more effectively used in screening varieties among sweet potatoes if coupled with other molecular markers especially ISSR, matK and rbcL markers.

The sweetpotato is very high in nutritive value, and merits wider use on this account alone. The book has 2 parts. A general one giving up-to-date information on the history, botany, cultivars, genetic engineering, propagation, diseases and pests, nutritional data and marketing; and a second part presenting data on sweetpotato growing practices in different areas of the world. The information should be useful to researchers, practitioners and crop administrators in different countries.

Book Participatory Sweet Potato Varieties Selection in Kenya for Consumers

Download or read book Participatory Sweet Potato Varieties Selection in Kenya for Consumers written by Margaret Onyango and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eating harbits of people keeps on changing over time so to the climate, calling for new inovertive technologies to adress the situation. In Kenya intensive production of sweet potato is constrained by lack of improved varieties, pests, diseases and scarcity of land. In this study 11 improved sweetpotato varieties; Kemb10, SPK004, Mugande, Namaswakhe, K117, Polista, Bungoma, Odinga, 292-H-12, Zapallo and Nyathi Odiewo (Improved), were tested against 4 popular farmer varieties; Nyathi Odiewo (local), Jayalo, Amina and Kuny kibuonjo. The experiment model was mother and baby trial with farmers' involvement. Yields, diseases, pests, consumer preference on market were evaluated. Analysis of variance done. Significant differences and means separated by least significant differences. Significant differences in yield, preference observed. Newly introduced sweet potato varieties had potential for improving consumers' conditions. Involvement of farmers is crucial in selection of preferred sweet potato varieties. The book is recommended for Research Scientists Agricultural Extension workers University and college students, farmers, traders, consumers of sweetpoato and other general readers

Book Sweet Potato

Download or read book Sweet Potato written by Ramesh C. Ray and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.), the seventh most important food crop after wheat, rice (paddy), maize, potato, barley and cassava, is a staple food in many developing countries of the tropics and sub-tropics, and also serves as animal feed and raw material for several food- and feed -based industries. This New World crop has high biological efficiency of converting solar energy into edible energy (152MJ/ha/day) in form of tuberous (storage) roots and could be the food for the ever growing human population in future. Asia leads in area (60.75%) and production (86.89%) of sweet potato in the world. Sweet potato was originally a herbaceous perennial but was domesticated as an annual and grows best in moderately warm climate and temperature of 21-26oC. It requires light textured soil with the optimum pH of 5.5 -6.5 for good growth of the crop. Current research has focused on development of high starch, high dry matter and coloured (ß-carotene and anthocyanin-rich) sweet potato varieties for industrial applications in addition to traditional usage as food and animal feed. Sweet potato storage roots are subjected to several forms of post harvest losses during harvest, transportation from farmers' field to market and in storage. These are due to mechanical injury, weight loss, sprouting, diseases and pests. The subject, post harvest aspects of sweet potato in food, feed and industries, is a topic of current interest.

Many human management practices involving crops, forests and natural vegetation also affect plant growth through the soil and roots. Understanding the morphology and function of roots from the cellular level to the level of the whole root system is required for both plant production and environmental protection. This book is at the forefront of plant root science (rhizology), catering to professional plant scientists and graduate students. It covers root development, stress physiology, ecology, and associations with microorganisms. The chapters are selected papers originally presented at the 6th Symposium of the International Society of Root Research, where plant biologists, ecologists, soil microbiologists, crop scientists, forestry scientists, and environmental scientists, among others, gathered to discuss current research results and to establish rhizology as a newly integrated research area.
