Book Arctic and Alpine Environments

Download or read book Arctic and Alpine Environments written by Jack D. Ives and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, Arctic and Alpine Environments examines, the relatively simple ecosystems of arctic and alpine lands that still occupy extensive areas little disturbed by modern technology. The book argues that there is a necessity for carefully controlled development of the resources of these regions and suggests that there is a risk of irreversible disturbance without full understanding of these regions. This book provides a detailed documentation of cold-stressed arctic and alpine terrestrial environments and systematically deals with the present and past physical environment – climate, hydrology and glaciology; biota – treeline, vegetation, vertebrate zoology, and historical biogeography; abiotic processes – geomorphological and pedological and the role of man – bioclimatology, archaeology and technological impact, including radioecology. The book will appeal to academics and students of environmental and biological science, as well as providing a significant source for conservationists’, government agencies and industrial organizations.

Download or read book The Arctic Climate System written by Mark C. Serreze and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic can be viewed as an integrated system, characterised by intimate couplings between its atmosphere, ocean and land, linked in turn to the larger global system. This comprehensive, up-to-date assessment begins with an outline of early Arctic exploration and the growth of modern research. Using an integrated systems approach, subsequent chapters examine the atmospheric heat budget and circulation, the surface energy budget, the hydrologic cycle and interactions between the ocean, atmosphere and sea ice cover. Reviews of recent directions in numerical modelling and the characteristics of past Arctic climates set the stage for detailed discussion of recent climate variability and trends, and projected future states. Throughout, satellite remote sensing data and results from recent major field programs are used to illustrate key processes. The Arctic Climate System provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the subject for researchers and advanced students in a wide range of disciplines.

Book Duration of Cold Temperature Over North America

Download or read book Duration of Cold Temperature Over North America written by Paul Tattelman and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The duration of temperature as low as -60°F over North America is presented. Data from 108 stations across the United States and Canada were tabulated to provide the longest period of temperature at or below eight 'threshold' temperatures in ten years. Also depicted are expected (approximately 50 percent probability) duration of six 'threshold' temperatures during any single winter season. Durations at or below -60°F have exceeded 48 hours in the Yukon, but the longest duration of -40°F over the contiguous United States was only two hours along the Canadian border of North Dakota. Book Advanced Techniques for Studying Microorganisms in Extreme Environments

Download or read book Advanced Techniques for Studying Microorganisms in Extreme Environments written by Étienne Yergeau and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will highlight advanced techniques that were recently used for studying microorganisms in extreme environments. Recent technological leaps in the study of microorganisms in the environment now make it possible to comprehensively study microbes in the environment. Extreme environments could benefit from the application of these techniques, but many challenges such as low biomass, low activity and slow growth has prevented their wide adoption. This book will review recent application of state-of-the-art techniques in extreme environments, helping researcher and graduate students get a better knowledge of the tools available.
