Abstract: Adolescent Anxiety and Depression in Hong Kong 1 Abstract The present study examined the relationships between perceived parental style and symptoms of depression and anxiety among adolescents in Hong Kong, and tested whether these relations were mediated by cognitive style. It was hypothesized that negative cognitive style would mediate the relationship between perceived parental style with characteristics of low care and over control and depressive and anxiety symptoms among adolescents. Participants consisted of a community sample of 297 Chinese adolescents aged 12-16 years. They completed a set of self-report measures assessing their perception of parenting style, cognitions relating to depressive and anxious thoughts, and their current depressive and anxiety symptoms. Multiple regression analyses were performed, and the results provided support for the mediating effect of cognitive style on the relationship between perceived parental style and depressive and anxiety symptoms among adolescents in Hong Kong. Results also showed evidence of cognitive content-specificity that thoughts on personal failure were predictive for depressive symptoms and thoughts on social threat were predictive for anxiety symptoms in adolescents. Book Culture and Perceived Parenting Style

Download or read book Culture and Perceived Parenting Style written by Anusha Devi Natarajan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study compared reports of perceived parenting style of mothers and fathers from predominantly White-American (n = 276) college students in the United States and Indian college students in India (n = 195). This study investigated whether cultural group identification moderated the relationship between perceived parenting style and college students' interpersonal/family and academic/career functioning. Results indicated that Indian females were most likely to perceive their mothers and fathers as authoritative, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian males. Indian males were most likely to perceive their mothers as authoritarian, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian females. Perceived authoritative parenting was inversely associated with interpersonal and academic problems for Indian and U.S. college students, while perceived authoritarian parenting was positively associated with interpersonal and academic problems in both samples. Culture did not serve as a moderator for perceived parenting style and interpersonal or academic problems.

Due to lack of support or too much interference from the parent the academic learning process of the student is disturbed and delayed. This also puts a lot of stress on the teacher trying to support the student in achieving to the best of his or her abilities as well as managing the parents on the side. The purpose of this study was to investigate how 1) different parenting styles deliver different results and if that implies that there exists a more effective parenting style when it comes to school performance, 2) if we could make any correlations between school behaviour, motivation, results and how parents approach their children at home, and 3) to further explore how parenting style affects the academic performance of students in a local Hong Kong kindergarten. Therefore the aim was to explain the relationship between parenting styles, goal orientation and academic achievement in an Early Years Hong Kong school setting. This study identified the parenting styles prevalent in the kindergarten and explored which of the four parenting styles from Baumrind (1971) and Chao (1994) are being used by the kindergarten parents. It continued by identifying the academic achievement prevalent amoung the students and correlating it with their parent's parenting style. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used throughout this study. A group of 60 Kindergarten students were monitored through observation for a period of 6 months in order to track their academic achievement. A survey was sent home and completed by the 60 parents of these students collecting information on parenting style and socio-economic information. Finally both findings were correlated and significant similarities and connections were identified between both parenting style and academic achievement. The study found strong correlations between parenting styles and the performance of students in school especially concerning authoritative, authoritarian and training parenting styles. The results indicated students from authoritative parenting background scored significantly higher in academic achievement while students from authoritative and training background had low performance. There was no significant correlation found between goal orientation and parenting style or academic achievement. Book The Effects of Perceived Parenting Styles on Psychopathology Attachment Self Esteem and Grit in American and Indian Students

Download or read book The Effects of Perceived Parenting Styles on Psychopathology Attachment Self Esteem and Grit in American and Indian Students written by Mazneen C. Havewala and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research indicates that among the various factors that could play a role in determining the personality and psychological well-being of a person, the parenting style is a major one. In the present study, the variables of perceived parenting styles, i.e. the ways in which one perceives his or her parents and the effect of culture were studied in relation to psychopathology, the nature of attachment, self-esteem and grit. The sample consisted of North American and Indian college/university students belonging to the age group of 18--25 (N = 256). Tools like the Parental Authority Questionnaire, the Outcome Questionnaire, the Relationship Questionnaire, Rosenberg's Self-esteem scale, and the 12-item Grit Scale were used to measure perceived parenting, psychopathology, attachment, self-esteem and grit respectively. The results indicated that the group that perceived their parents as authoritative had lesser psychopathology, tended to be more secure in their relationships, had higher self-esteem and higher grit, as compared to the groups that perceived their parents as authoritarian or permissive. Also, the group that perceived their parents as authoritarian showed worse outcomes on all the dependent variables. A majority of both, American and Indian participants perceived their parents as authoritative. However, the American participants displayed a greater amount of symptom distress as compared to the Indians participants. Perceived mother's authoritarianism emerged as a significant predictor of pathology and poor self-esteem. These and other findings, along with their implications are discussed.

Book The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles and College Sophomores Independence

Download or read book The Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Styles and College Sophomores Independence written by Molly M. Depew and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the first to second year of college can be a challenging time for college students and one that calls for increased independence. Extensive research exists on Baumrind's four parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and negligent) but not in relation to independence in college. This study examined the relationship between perceived parenting styles and four factors of independence (social competence, autonomy, locus of control, and executive functioning) in a sample of college sophomores. Results showed no significant difference in independence scores among parenting style groups. Limitations of the findings may be related to reliability and/or validity of the study's measures, or use of only one construct of parenting styles. Additionally, the researcher posits that personality may play a larger role in student independence than initially hypothesized. Implications for future research are discussed.

Book The Relationship Between Parenting Styles Learning Autonomy and Scholastic Achievement in Undergraduate College Students

Download or read book The Relationship Between Parenting Styles Learning Autonomy and Scholastic Achievement in Undergraduate College Students written by Meghan L. Starr and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the years, the role that parents play with regard to a child's academic achievement has been the source of considerable research. The type of parenting style employed by parents, whether it is authoritarian, authoritative, or permissive, has and continues to be a major theme in these studies. One area of particular interest that has been overlooked in these studies, however, is the influence that parents may have on a student's learning autonomy. Learning autonomy is the idea that a student has internal motivation to learn or achieve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the three styles of parenting, learning autonomy, perceived parental autonomy support, and scholastic achievement in undergraduate college students. Sixty-one participants were recruited at a small liberal arts college in the northeastern United States to complete questionnaires, which measured perceived parental authority of the participants' parents, perceived parental autonomy support, and students' own learning autonomy. The participants were also asked to list their grade point average. The results revealed positive and negative correlations between many of the variables in the study; however, simple regression analyses did not yield any statistically significant relationships between parental authority, learning autonomy, perceived autonomy support, and scholastic achievement.

Book Perceived Parenting Style Mindfulness Experiential Avoidance and Values Based Action Connections and Relations

Download or read book Perceived Parenting Style Mindfulness Experiential Avoidance and Values Based Action Connections and Relations written by Christianne Lynn Mobley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitioning to college life frequently requires making unique adjustments as individuals face new psychological demands such as adapting to a variety of social situations, financial worries, and increasing academic stress. Research suggests that three core intra and interpersonal processes of mindfulness, experiential avoidance, and values-based action (components of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) provide valuable indications of one's ability to make necessary adjustments in stressful situations. Also known to contribute to an individual's ability to make important adjustments is the perceived parenting style in which the individual was raised. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived parenting style and mindfulness, experiential avoidance, and values-based action. Data from 109 undergraduate student participants were analyzed using three separate one-way ANOVAs. Results indicated that no statistically significant relationship existed between perceived parenting style and mindfulness or experiential avoidance. A significant relationship was found, however, between perceived parenting style and values-based action, and post hoc comparisons using Tukey procedures indicated that individuals who perceive their parents to be indulgent are more likely to live in value-congruent ways than are individuals who perceive their parents to be neglectful. The implications for how these results may impact and inform college students, researchers, mental health professionals, and parents are provided.

Significant relations were found among the differences between maternal and paternal permissive parenting on overall student adjustment.

Book The Influence of Parenting Style and Perceived Mattering on Identity Style Orientation

Download or read book The Influence of Parenting Style and Perceived Mattering on Identity Style Orientation written by Rebecca L. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key developmental challenges young people face in adolescence and early adulthood is the formation of an adult identity. Based on the work of Erik Erikson (1963, 1964, 1968), this task is conceptualized as a psychosocial process that reflects an ongoing dialectic between individuals and their social environment. This dissertation focused on the influence of parenting style, and the perception of mattering to others, on the processing of identity-relevant information, characterized by an identity style orientation (Berzonsky, 1989, 1992). The multidimensional model of identity (Côté & Levine, 2002) was used as a framework to unite the bodies of literature on these topics, and to form hypotheses that were tested through the analysis of two longitudinal datasets. The first study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY; Statistics Canada, 1997) to examine the relationship between nurturing and rejecting parenting styles and the development of an identity style orientation. A series of hierarchical models were used to regress young adolescents' reports of parental behaviour on the three identity styles and later psychosocial outcomes, controlling for reports of parenting style provided by their primary guardians. Results showed that a nurturing parenting style was related to the normative and informational identity styles. The diffuse identity style was associated with parental rejection for boys, and a low level of parental nurturing for girls. The youth reports of parenting style were significantly better predictors than the corresponding assessments from their parental guardians. A second study was conducted to examine the association between the identity style orientations and the perception of mattering to parents and friends. Analysis was based on repeated measures gathered from a university population during their first three years of school (Adams, 2003). Random-intercept models were used to separate variation within- and between-subjects over time. Findings were limited, though there was some evidence that mattering to mother was associated with the normative and informational identity styles, and mattering to friends was related to the diffuse-avoidant orientation. Results from both studies provided support for the theoretical model, positioning it as a useful tool for future research on identity development.

Book Indulgent Parenting and the Life Satisfaction of College Students

Download or read book Indulgent Parenting and the Life Satisfaction of College Students written by Catherine Camille Coccia and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Several implications for future research and professional practice are indicated. As was noted in this study, the sample was predominantly white and only mothers and daughters were included, partially due to the small sample of fathers and sons available in the sample set. More studies need to be done in children and adolescents to examine how their perceptions of their parents' parenting styles influence their health and eating behaviors. Therefore, this study should be replicated using diverse samples. The model utilized in this study provides a starting point for family therapists, family life educators, as well as health professionals such as dietitians and nurses, to guide family life and health education programs for parents and college students. It is important to teach parents about the implications of parental indulgence on the health and life satisfaction of their children. Additionally, health and lifestyle education for emerging adults is essential and can help them attain healthy lifestyle behaviors that will affect them long into the future. Overall, the results of this study indicated that even as daughters begin to transition away from their parents, mothers still play an integral role in their daughters' health behaviors and outcomes.
