Book The Question of Skill in Cross Border Labour Mobilities

Download or read book The Question of Skill in Cross Border Labour Mobilities written by Gracia Liu-Farrer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selecting migrants based on skill has become a widely practised migration policy in many countries around the world. Since the late 20th century, research on 'skilled' and 'highly skilled' migration has raised important questions about the value and ethics of skill-based labour mobility. More recent research has begun to question the concept of skill and skill categorisation in both government policy and academic research. Taking the view that 'skills' are socially constructed categories and highly malleable concepts in practice, this edited volume centres the discussion on the following questions: Who are the arbitrators of skill? What constitutes skill? And how is skill constructed in the migration process and in turn, how does skill affect the mobility? The empirical studies in this volume show that diverse actors are involved in the process of identifying, evaluating and shaping migrant skill. The interpretation of migrants' skill is frequently distorted by their ascriptive characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender and nationality, reflecting the influence of colonial legacy, global inequality as well as social stratification. Finally, this edited volume emphasises the complex, and frequently reciprocal, relationship between skill and mobility. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Sociology, Human Geography, Politics, Social Anthropology, Economics, and Social Work. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Book Student Recruitment Agents in International Higher Education

Download or read book Student Recruitment Agents in International Higher Education written by Pii-Tuulia Nikula and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a focus on the growing number of institutions employing commercial agents to support international student recruitment, Student Recruitment Agents in International Higher Education provides an evidence-based exploration of this phenomenon, and will increase the reader’s understanding of the multiple dimensions of agent engagement, its contradictions and complexities. This book explores who and what these education agents are, what students and higher education institutions can expect from a good agent, how bad agents can be identified and avoided, and what we learn from the reasons for the development of these agents in the first place. Offering theoretical perspectives with practical applications, this volume features contributions from academics and scholar-practitioners, laying out fresh perspectives and insights on topics such as process transparency, developing agent policy and procedures, and government regulations. Providing the ideal reference for students embarking on international study, agents, higher educational institutions, government/accreditation agencies, researchers, and practitioners, this insightful book acts as a critical basis for further research and improvements in higher education practice.

Book Technology and English Studies

Download or read book Technology and English Studies written by James A. Inman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In scholarship about technology and English studies, there are a number of first-person narratives that suggest what may be termed "traditional" professional paths. That is, they chronicle the positive influence of a particular technology, class, professor, or publication, and suggest that it inspired a distinct and rewarding professional path. What is missing is the rest of the story--alternate ways that individuals have come to do work in technology and English studies and analysis of what this means for paths others might pursue. Technology and English Studies: Innovative Professional Paths meets this need. The volume begins with definitions of its three central terms: technology, English Studies, and professional paths. Chapters are organized in four sections, reflecting both a chronological progression and thematic professional development: "The Past as the Future"; "Searching the Academy"; "Pushing Boundaries"; and "Forging Beyond." As a forerunner in addressing professionalization across the domains that comprise technology and English studies, it will prove foundational for many readers with non-traditional or otherwise alternate backgrounds who are working out what professional paths might be available to them. Technology and English Studies: Innovative Professional Paths is an important professional development resource for professors, instructors, and graduate students across the field of English studies, including rhetoric and composition, computers and writing, computer-assisted language learning, literary and linguistic computing, literary studies, English education, technical communication, linguistics, writing centers, second-language education/ESL, and creative writing.

Download or read book Understanding Student Participation and Choice in Science and Technology Education written by Ellen Karoline Henriksen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on data generated by the EU’s Interests and Recruitment in Science (IRIS) project, this volume examines the issue of young people’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. With an especial focus on female participation, the chapters offer analysis deploying varied theoretical frameworks, including sociology, social psychology and gender studies. The material also includes reviews of relevant research in science education and summaries of empirical data concerning student choices in STEM disciplines in five European countries. Featuring both quantitative and qualitative analyses, the book makes a substantial contribution to the developing theoretical agenda in STEM education. It augments available empirical data and identifies strategies in policy-making that could lead to improved participation—and gender balance—in STEM disciplines. The majority of the chapter authors are IRIS project members, with additional chapters written by specially invited contributors. The book provides researchers and policy makers alike with a comprehensive and authoritative exploration of the core issues in STEM educational participation.
