Book excerpt: The main purpose of this research was provided an imperative framework depicting how sports PST decipher in to improvement within-practice and competitive performance by showing athletes' levels. Secondly; investigated a revolutionary attempt made by the inquiry to attributed psychological skills training levels in age, sex, sport types, playing posititons or enents and score rank group factors in between team and individual athletes to infer the intended study area across Ethiopia. This research design was descriptive and treated both qualitative and quantitative study methodologies. In terms of sample sources distribution the focused areas of the study were from team sports (Football), and individual sports (Athletics events), and were developed by mixed sampling techniques. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 and descriptive statistics method were developed. The two standardized PST assessment scale questionnaires were Illinois competition anxiety test and sport motivational scale (SMS28). Independent Samples Test, Chi -Square of Cross Tabulation, Anova, and a Pearson Correlation Analysis tools were applied. Based on the tool of chi-square test output in competitive anxieties in general there was no significant relationships between male and female football players. Founded from the independent samples Test output in motivations in broadly there were no significant differences between team and individual athletes. Extrinsically team athletes (M = 3.23) and individual athletes (M = 3.20), t (493) = -.423, p = .672. And amotivation, team athletes (M = 2.68) had low than individual athletes (M = 2.75), t (493) = -.624, p = .533. Generally, the researcher founded that both Ethiopian sport types' athletes were highly competitive anxious (cognitive and somatic state anxiety) and low self confidence. And as measured in different statistical tools broadly the sport motivation PST levels results directed us to conclude both Ethiopian team and individual sports type athletes were under low intrinsic motives and high in both extrinsic motivation and amotivation in 2016/17 competition season

Book Mental Toughness and Hardiness at Different Levels of Football

Download or read book Mental Toughness and Hardiness at Different Levels of Football written by Mark Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Psychology, grade: First Class, University of Sunderland, language: English, abstract: There has been little research into the psychological factors affecting footballers at different levels (Hanin et al, 2000), in particular, the mental toughness and hardiness of footballers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mental toughness and hardiness of footballers and the level of football at which they perform. Participants - 61 footballers (mean AGE=25.23 years; range 18-40 years; SD=5.55), from various clubs and 2 levels of performance. Mental toughness was measured using the Psychological Performance Inventory (PPI; Loehr, 1986). Hardiness was measured using the Personal views survey III- R (Maddi and Khoshaba 2001). Elite footballers scored significantly higher than recreational footballers in overall mental toughness, hardiness and each individual subscale, (Golby & Sheard, 2004). While the present study confirms that elite footballers have superior levels of mental toughness and hardiness than recreational footballers, future research might concentrate further on psychological skills training, coping strategies and psychological preparation strategies in a wider variation of sports specific to a wider range of athletes, from grass roots to international level.

Book The Influence of Outcome Expectancy on Optimisim Pessimism Anxiety and Self confidence in Collegiate Football Players

Download or read book The Influence of Outcome Expectancy on Optimisim Pessimism Anxiety and Self confidence in Collegiate Football Players written by Tiffany D. Watson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Expectations are instrumental in predicting performance quality (Solomon, 2002). According to the expectancy theory, what is expected to happen often does (Chase & Lirgg, 1997). Often, the underdog, or unexpected winner, will defeat the more likely winner creating questions as to the validity of the expectancy theory. Psychological variables related to expectations may contribute to the ability of the underdog to succeed in unexpected situations. Optimism refers to a positive expectation or perception of the future, and pessimism refers to a negative expectation or perception (Scheier & Carver, 1993). Anxiety, though often given a negative connotation, has shown facilitative effects on performance (Mellalieu, Hanton, & Jones, 2003). Whether anxiety is facilitative or debilitative to performance is based on the interpretation of anxiety, also termed direction. Individual levels of optimism and pessimism alter the interpretation of anxiety, with optimists experiencing less debilitative effects of anxiety (Wilson, Raglin, & Pritchard, 2002). Self-confidence is one of the strongest predictors of performance (Hardy, 1996; Jones, 1995). Self-confidence is related to optimism and pessimism by definition, as it refers to the belief or expectations about the ability to succeed in a future performance (Krane & Williams, 1992). Not only is self-confidence related to performance and the constructs of optimism and pessimism, but it also mediates anxiety interpretation (Jones & Hanton, 2001; Swain & Jones, 1996). The purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences in psychological variables such as optimism, pessimism, anxiety and self-confidence contribute to the success of the underdog in a competitive environment. In the current study, 15 male, Division I-AA collegiate football players from a southeastern university were tested over a three game trial period. Game conditions or outcome expectancies were determined by participant ratings on a 5-point Likert scale question. Response options ranged from strong underdog to strong favorite. Participant predictions defined one underdog (U), one favorite (F), and one evenly matched (E) condition. Participants were administered the instruments 2 days prior to each of the 3 competitions. State optimism and pessimism levels were assessed with the Optimism/Pessimism Scale (OPS; Dember, Martin, Hummer, Howe, & Melton, 1989). Trait anxiety levels were established with the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT; Martens, Vealey, & Burton, 1990). Finally, the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2; Martens, Burton, Vealey, Bump, & Smith, 1990) was administered to assess state cognitive and state somatic anxiety as well as state self-confidence. Directional scales were added to the SCAT and the CSAI-2 to determine participants' interpretation of anxiety symptoms (Jones & Swain, 1992). Using ANOVA analysis, significant differences across game conditions were found for OPS-pessimism scores as well as state somatic anxiety scores. Consistent significant Pearson Correlations across all 3 weeks included: OPS-optimism and self-confidence directional scores (r = .762, .760, .655), self-confidence total and self-confidence directional scores (r = .659, .852, .871), state somatic anxiety directional and state cognitive anxiety directional scores (r = .793, .875,780). Support for the expectancy theory was found in the present study. Thus, modification of expectations, more specifically altering pessimistic expectations may lead to higher performance quality. In addition, maintaining high levels of self-confidence may regulate the debilitative effects of anxiety and also contribute to more optimistic expectations.

Book Development Validation and Standardization of the Sports Trait Anxiety and the Burnout Scales

Download or read book Development Validation and Standardization of the Sports Trait Anxiety and the Burnout Scales written by Rodel P. Canlas and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a five-stage test development project that developed two local assessment instruments, namely ; Sports Trait Anxiety Scale (STAS) and Sports Burnout Scale (SBS). Phase 1 is the generation of item pool. Specifically, the researcher employed three procedures ; (1) interviews with athletes, coaches and sport psychologist, (2) extensive survey of existing studies and literature and (3) review of tests on anxiety and burnout. The preliminary draft of STAS is consisted of 3 factors and 82 items, while 4 factors and 134 items for SBS. Further, consultations with experts transpired and established the face and content validity of the instruments. The 2nd phase is the Dry Run and Sampling, wherein the initial drafts were administered to 203 respondents. Phase 3, is the establishment of validity and reliability of the instruments. Specifically, exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the construct validity, while reliability was determined using coefficient alpha with item analysis procedure. In STAS, the reliability scales are: .918 (factor 1), .859 (factor 2), and .823 (factor 3) reliability indices. The validity index yields a loading of .479 to .717. On the other hand, for SBS, the reliability scales are: .962 (factor 1), .907 (factor 2) and .897 (factor 3) reliability indices. And the validity index yields a loading of .419 to .708. Phase 4 is the research testing of the final forms of the instruments. Overall, the final form STAS has 3 factors and a total of 37 items. In particular, factor 1 is the most important factor, since it accounts for significant proportion of variance ; 19.63% variance. Factor 2 accounts for 13.31% variance and Factor 3, which accounts for 11.15% variance. In SBS final form, factors were reduced to 3 with 69 total items retained. Similarly, Factor 1 is the most important factor, since it accounts for 21.96% variance, followed by Factor 2 for 12.04% variance and the Factor 3 for 10.15% variance. In Phase 5, standardization or norming, where in a total of 508 respondents were used for the establishment of tests norms. In terms of respondent's profile, participants were collegiate players from Far Eastern University, University of the East and San Sebastian College-Recoletos. The age range is between 16-24 years and majority of respondents were: male, track and field players and with Education as the degree program. Significant differences were found in the three dimensions of STAS. Under dimension 1, significant differences were found on the variables of gender, school, sports, and course. And on component 3, significant differences were noted on gender, school and sports. In contrast, on the dimensions of SBS no significant difference was noted.
