Book European Weapons and Armour

Download or read book European Weapons and Armour written by Ewart Oakeshott and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of arms in Western Europe from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution. A treasury of information based on solid scholarship, anyone seeking a factual and vivid account of the story of arms from the Renaissance period to the Industrial Revolution will welcome this book. The author chooses as his starting-point the invasion of Italy by France in 1494, which sowed the dragon's teeth of all the successive European wars; the French invasion was to accelerate the trend towards new armaments and new methods of warfare. The authordescribes the development of the handgun and the pike, the use and style of staff-weapons, mace and axe and war-hammer, dagger and dirk and bayonet. He shows how armour attained its full Renaissance splendour and then suffered itssorry and inevitable decline, culminating in the Industrial Revolution, with its far-reaching effects on military armaments. Above all, he follows the long history of the sword, queen of weapons, to the late eighteenth century, when it finally ceased to form a part of a gentleman's every-day wear. Lavishly illustrated. EWART OAKESHOTT was one of the world's leading authorities on the arms and armour of medieval Europe. His other works on the subject include Records of the Medieval Sword and The Sword in the Age of Chivalry.

Book Ancient Armour and Weapons in Europe

Download or read book Ancient Armour and Weapons in Europe written by John Hewitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Armour and Weapons in Europe: From the Iron Period of the Northern Nations to the End of the Seventeenth Century; Supplement, Comprising the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries It is by no means contended that a complete examina tion of these later centuries would not be desirable; but, to effect this, our little work would be so much augmented in bulk and costliness, that our chief hope of its usefulness, a wide circulation among artists and students, (to a certain number of whom the expensiveness of a book is a seri ous Obj ection, ) would be materially diminished. We have therefore resolved to adopt the plan already indicated: in carrying it into effect, we shall endeavo ur, by giving numerous references, to make it an easy task for the stu dent to complete the investigation by his own researches. It may be further remarked that, on quitting the four teenth century, the fashions Of armour are much more easy to be understood than before. Defences of plate being now generally adopted, the differences of suits are principally differences of form; and, as remains of real arm our and weapons of this time are to be found in many Collections. Book The Spanish Tercios 1536 1704

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mixed infantry formation made up of about 3,000 men armed with pikes, swords and handguns, the innovative and influential tercio or 'Spanish square' was the basic combat unit of the armies of Spain throughout much of the 16th and 17th centuries. Arguably the first permanent tactical formation seen in Europe since the Roman cohort, the tercio was the forerunner of modern formations such as the battalion and regiment. The variety of different weapons fielded in the tercio meant the Spanish infantry could resist opposing cavalry forces while overcoming every kind of enemy infantry deployed against them. Featuring full-colour artwork and photographs of rare items held at the Spanish Army Museum, this study covers the whole period during which the tercios were active, opening with the third Italian war between the forces of France and the Holy Roman Emperor and concluding with the final transformation of the Spanish tercios into regiments in 1704.
