Book A Study of Selected English Critical Terms from 1650 1800

Download or read book A Study of Selected English Critical Terms from 1650 1800 written by Edward A. Watson and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Study of Selected English Critical Terms from 1650 to 1800: A Constellation is a lexicographical record of the usage of twenty-two words, terms and concepts in the critical literature of the Restoration and eighteenth century. These twenty-two terms form a constellation or cluster because of a certain predictability in the critical vocabulary and the associations generated from the use of an imprecise nomenclature. This stylization accounts for the imprecision in the use of specific words, and the study indicates the pluri-signative nature of many of the terms used.

Book New Critical Studies on Early Quaker Women 1650 1800

Download or read book New Critical Studies on Early Quaker Women 1650 1800 written by Michele Lise Tarter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Critical Studies on Early Quaker Women, 1650—1800 takes a fresh look at archival and printed sources from England and America, elucidating why women were instrumental to the Quaker movement from its inception to its establishment as a transatlantic religious body. This authoritative volume, the first collection to focus entirely on the contributions of women, is a landmark study of their distinctive religious and gendered identities. The chapters connect three richly woven threads of Quaker women's lives—Revolutions, Disruptions and Networks—by tying gendered experience to ruptures in religion across this radical, volatile period of history.

Book A History of English Critical Terms Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Critical Terms Classic Reprint written by J. W. Bray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Critical Terms HE purpose of the following work is to trace the changes of meaning which have taken place in the chief terms employed in 'english criticism. It is intended to be purely a study in criticism, and not to repeat information which can be obtained from an ordinary dictionary. The organizing idea of the work is found in the grouping of the terms in the Appendix. It is assumed that if the history of two or three of the most important terms of each group is given in full, the history of the synonymous and negative expressions will also have been given, at least as far as their critical and literary significance is concerned. Hence the secondary terms are given but scant notice, and their critical import is to be gathered mostly from the larger terms of their respective groups.
