Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of School Grounds for the Schools of Michigan Educational training is the result of a direct and conscious effort on the part of the parent and teacher combined with the indirect result of the surroundings in which the child is placed. The environ ment of the child exerts a greater influence on his life than we Educational sometimes think and it is unfortunate that school surround Training. Ings at least are not always such as conduce to a proper desire on his part to be helpful and a still more important desire for better things. The child may be forced to go to school but he likes school only when it is worth liking, and it is not until he likes it that he learns. The most costly school apparatus will not atone for a cheerless schoolroom and grounds. If daily surrounded by those influences that elevate and tend to cleanliness and good order, that cultivate a love of flowers, good pictures, and proper decorations he will soon reach that degree of culture where nothing else will please him and when he grows up and has a home of his own, the effect of early training will then be seen in the clean, neat yards, good pictures on the walls, shade trees, and flowers properly arranged around the buildings. These things will be demanded because he has been brought up to be happy in no other environment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Grounds and School Architecture for the School Officers of Michigan 1908 Some years ago the Department published a pamphlet on the subject of school architecture. The calls for this pamphlet have been so numerous that the edition is exhausted, and I therefore deem it advisable to issue a second pamphlet on the same subject. Until recent years little attention was given to the matter of school archi tecture, Contracts were let to builders who had no experience or training along the line of sanitary science or architecture, and as a consequence our state is dotted over with school buildings, both in country and city, which are insanitary, improperly constructed, poorly lighted and without proper means of ventilation, Within the past fifteen years architects have begun to give special study to the subject of school architecture, and researches in sanitary science have brought out ideas Which if incorporated into our school buildings will prevent much sickness, and also prevent that too frequent occurrence, of young people breaking down during their school career. In almost every instance where young people have been obliged to leave school because of failing health the cause has been ascribed to matters which are not connected with the school, and we find that in a large number of cases the direct cause of these break-downs is improper light, heating, ventilation and sewage. Book The Relation of Landscape Architecture to the Public Schools

Download or read book The Relation of Landscape Architecture to the Public Schools written by Charles Earnest Greening and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Landscape Architecture to the Public Schools: An Address Before the National Convention of School Officials at Detroit, Michigan, June, 1921 "One impulse from a vernal wood, May teach you more of man, Of moral evil and of good Than all the sages can." So wrote Wordsworth long ago; so believes everybody today. "Back to Nature," is now the educational slogan. We know now that real education consists in knowing the things that touch our lives, the things of every day - the common things of our work and play. The best university education is merely an extension of the kindergarten idea. Men are but children of larger growth. In harmony with this idea, educational institutions everywhere are establishing School Gardens where the boys and girls become acquainted with the nature of flowers, trees, shrubs, and vegetables. This is a grand and splendid step forward. Some of the most progressive schools have gone a step further and established botanical gardens for the benefit of the study of natural science; so that within a small compass there is brought together a collection of trees, shrubs, and plants, on the School Grounds, that may be studied text book in hand, under the teacher's direction. Benefits Derived by Students This method gives a far more intimate acquaintance with trees and plants and their habits than the old way of merely memorizing their names. A few schools have gone a step beyond this, and with the aid of text books and instructions received from Landscape Architects, have laid out their own school grounds, securing at once the double purpose of beautification, and nature's study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Law and a History and Description of the Educational System of Michigan During several years' experience in the school room and in connection with my work as a member and Secretary of the Board of Examiners for this county, I have frequently found myself in need of information concerning the educational system of the State, and have often been called upon by teachers, officers, and others for directions concerning their rights, duties, and responsibilities as defined by the statutes and the common law of the school. In this manner was accumulated a large portion of the data upon which this work is founded. The frequency with which this information is called for and the fact that there is nothing in circulation containing a summary of these matters led to its production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-Ninth Annual Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State of Michigan: With Accompanying Documents for the Year 1895 It is with no little pleasure that the Superintendent of Public Instruo tion is able to report another year of great progress and improvement in Michigan schools. The financial stringency end the continued low price of agricultural and mining products, has had a tendency in some localities to curtail the amounts appropriated for educational purposes; but the loyal manner and commendable spirit with which almost all of our oom mnnities have maintained the schools, is a just cause for increased pride in our State. The, lack of remunerative employment and the rigid enforcement of our new and very efieotive compulsory school law. Has caused a fine increase in the number of pupils enrolled. The teachers have given much more study to the science of teaching. Better methods are constantly coming into use. A spirit of im rovement end an suthu siastic love for the work is more apparent. Idea s are placed higher, both by teachers and patrons. More careful sosdemio preparation is made by candidates for teaching, and the means for self-onltnre and improvement are used for more than formerly. Machine methods are giving place to more intelligent and progressive ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Education: An Address Delivered at the Annual Commencement of the University of Michigan, July 1, 1880 I am well aware that it will be urged against this view, that it would tend to keep many deserving young men out of the learned professions altogether. But I answer, no. Let the de serving young men pass through the course that will best fit them for the learned professions. It is an undeniable wrong to such to either deprive them of such a training, or to permit them to avoid it. But if it be further urged that there are many others who would so be kept out of the learned professions because they lacked the industry or the natural capacity for passing through the arduous studies of a full'collegiate course;. I answer, let such not aspire to a professional life at all. Let them rather turn aside to some other of the many honorable callings for which they are fitted. God has not given equal capacity to all. Some have gifts which fit them best for faithful work; others, for high thinking. One of the uses of a high standard of prelim inary preparation for professional life, is that a righteous test of capacity is applied. A righteous system of survivorship is early established; and so far from being a hardship, it is an evi dent blessing to the man of limited capacity to be turned back betimes from pursuits where he could only fail, and directed to others not less honorable, where success and happiness await him. Said a distinguished American statesman, in a letter written when he was the president of a college, I am not one of those who advise every one to undertake the work of a liberal educa tion. Indeed, I believe that in two-thirds of the cases such advice would be unwise. The great body of the people will be and ought to be intelligent farmers and mechanics, and in many_9. Book Research on Exemplary Schools

Download or read book Research on Exemplary Schools written by Gilbert R. Austin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on Exemplary Schools covers significant research works on effective school learning, with particular emphasis on identifying and analyzing a student's abilities and characteristics on the assumption that student learning was primarily determined by differences in individual potential and needs. The information provided is derived from the assumption that the characteristics of the school learning environment may explain the extent to which students master the outcomes desired from the school teaching-learning experience. This text is organized into three parts encompassing 10 chapters. Part I reviews the history of the exemplary schools research movements and the research findings, as well as policy implications concerning the relationships between private and public schools education, both Catholic and nonsectarian. Part II describes the methods for identifying exemplary schools, school climate, and the roles of the teacher and the school principal. Part III describes the policy issues emerging from effective schools research. This part also provide some critical thoughts on the movement from the perspective of an educational psychologist whose specialties are educational measurement and instructional design. This book will prove useful to researchers and practitioners who wish to improve the outcomes of all students in their schools.
