Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between nurses' attitudes toward and experiences with advance directives. The hypothesis stated that there will be a positive correlation in a group of nurses' attitudes toward and experiences with advance directives. The sample selected for this research consisted of 34 Registered Nurses. A total of 19 participants out of this group completed both the attitudinal and experience questionnaires that were used to correlate the relationship between the variables. Higher scores on the questionnaires indicated a more positive attitude and a more positive experience with advance directives. The Pearson r was used to analyze the findings. These findings indicated a strong statistical correlation with positive attitudes and positive experiences with advance directives. Therefore, the hypothesis was accepted. Recommendations for further study include further testing of the Attitudinal and Experience Questionnaires and using a larger sample size, at different sampling sites. In addition, studies that explore how institutions are educating health care professionals and patients in the use of advance directives are needed.

The study used a descriptive correlational design to examine these attitudes, and the results were correlated with level of education and rank. The study used a convenience sample and the site was a Midwestern Air Force medical center. Almost 100% of Air Force nurses surveyed had at least a Bachelor's degree, 97% had a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in nursing. Air Force nurses had an overall good attitude toward nursing research. Air Force nurses at the Diploma, BSN, and MSN education levels in nursing had the most research experience in the past five years. Rank and highest total level of education (nursing and non-nursing combined) were not found to be statistically significant predictors of research experience or attitude. Highest level of education in nursing was found to be a statistically significant predictor of research experience and attitude in the Air Force nurses studied.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to study the relationship between the knowledge of the usefulness of the nursing care plan and the attitude of nurses toward the plan/care planning process. The independent variable involved attendance at an educational program which impacted on the dependent variable of attitude. The hypothesis for the study was: nurses who attend a nursing care planning process educationa1, program would exhibit more positive attitudes regarding the usefulness of the nursing plan process than nurses who did not participate in the educational program. Thirty participants all possessing diploma school educations with one to six years registered nurse experience were chosen by accidental sampling. Fifteen attended an educational program and fifteen did not. All completed a tool measuring attitude towards nursing care plans. Attitude tools were distributed and collected by a volunteer. The t-test findings indicated that there was no significant difference in attitude towards the nursing care planning process of those nurses who attended the educational program compared to those who did not. Therefore the hypothesis was rejected. Recommendations for further study include validating and testing reliability of tool, studying various levels of educational groups, randomization of sample population and securing demographic data of participants.
