Book Where Europe Begins Stories

Download or read book Where Europe Begins Stories written by Yoko Tawada and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gorgeous collection of fantastic and dreamlike tales by one of the world's most innovative contemporary writers. Chosen as a 2005 Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year, Where Europe Begins has been described by the Russian literary phenomenon Victor Pelevin as "a spectacular journey through a world of colliding languages and multiplying cities." In these stories' disparate settings—Japan, Siberia, Russia, and Germany—the reader becomes as much a foreigner as the author, or the figures that fill this book: the ghost of a burned woman, a traveler on the Trans-Siberian railroad, a mechanical doll, a tongue, a monk who leaps into his own reflection. Through the timeless art of storytelling, Yoko Tawada discloses the virtues of bewilderment, estrangement, and Hilaritas: the goddess of rejoicing.

Book Extensive Reading in the Second Language Classroom

Download or read book Extensive Reading in the Second Language Classroom written by Richard R. Day and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive examination of extensive reading shows how reading large quantities of books and other materials can provide students with essential practice in learning to read and help them develop a positive attitude towards reading, which is sometimes missed in second language classes. The authors first examine the cognitive and affective nature of reading and then offer a wealth of practical advice for implementing extensive reading with second language learners. Suggestions are provided for integrating extensive reading into the curriculum, establishing a library, selecting reading materials, and keeping records for purposes of evaluation. The text also describes a wide variety of classroom activities to supplement individualized silent reading. The information will be useful both for pre-service teachers and for teachers and administrators who want to improve the teaching of reading in their second language programs.

Book Improving Adult Literacy Instruction

Download or read book Improving Adult Literacy Instruction written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high level of literacy in both print and digital media is required for negotiating most aspects of 21st-century life, including supporting a family, education, health, civic participation, and competitiveness in the global economy. Yet, more than 90 million U.S. adults lack adequate literacy. Furthermore, only 38 percent of U.S. 12th graders are at or above proficient in reading. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction synthesizes the research on literacy and learning to improve literacy instruction in the United States and to recommend a more systemic approach to research, practice, and policy. The book focuses on individuals ages 16 and older who are not in K-12 education. It identifies factors that affect literacy development in adolescence and adulthood in general, and examines their implications for strengthening literacy instruction for this population. It also discusses technologies for learning that can assist with multiple aspects of teaching, assessment, and accommodations for learning. There is inadequate knowledge about effective instructional practices and a need for better assessment and ongoing monitoring of adult students' proficiencies, weaknesses, instructional environments, and progress, which might guide instructional planning. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction recommends a program of research and innovation to validate, identify the boundaries of, and extend current knowledge to improve instruction for adults and adolescents outside school. The book is a valuable resource for curriculum developers, federal agencies such as the Department of Education, administrators, educators, and funding agencies.

Book Vocabulary Knowledge

Download or read book Vocabulary Knowledge written by Scott Jarvis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language researchers and practitioners often adopt tools and techniques without testing whether they really work as they should. This is understandable because most scholars do not have the time or expertise to properly evaluate the usefulness of all instruments, measures, and methods they need. It is therefore critical to have problem solvers in the field who gain the necessary expertise and take the time to scrutinize existing methods, identify problems, and offer new solutions. This volume represents the work of scholars who have done this; it is a collection of the latest advances, developments, and innovations regarding the modeling and measurement of learners’ vocabulary growth curves, current levels of vocabulary knowledge and lexical proficiency, and the patterns of lexical diversity found in their language production. Several of the contributors also address the complex but important relationship between automated indices and human judgments of learners’ lexical patterns and abilities.

Book Using Literature to Teach English as a Second Language

Download or read book Using Literature to Teach English as a Second Language written by Membrive, Veronica and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation has replaced stereotypical and old methods as an attempt to make English language teaching and learning appealing, effective, and simple. However, teaching a second language through literature may be a paramount tool to consolidate not only students’ lexical and grammatical competences, but also for the development of their cultural awareness and broadening of their knowledge through interaction and collaboration that foster collective learning. Despite past difficulties, literature’s position in relation to language teaching can be revendicated and revalued. Using Literature to Teach English as a Second Language is an essential research publication that exposes the current state of this methodological approach and observes its reverberations, usefulness, strengths, and weaknesses when used in a classroom where English is taught as a second language. In this way, this book will provide updated tools to explore teaching and learning through the most creative and enriching manifestations of one language – literature. Featuring a range of topics such as diversity, language learning, and plurilingualism, this book is ideal for academicians, curriculum designers, administrators, education professionals, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visit the website for A Better India; A Better World; here. With one of the highest GDP growth rates in the world and an array of recent achievements in technology; industry and entrepreneurship; India strides confidently towards the future. But; in the world’s largest democracy; not everyone is equally fortunate. More than 300 million Indians are still prey to hunger; illiteracy and disease; and 51 per cent of India’s children are still undernourished. What will it take for India to bridge this great divide? When will the fruits of development reach the poorest of the poor; and wipe the tears from the eyes of every man; woman and child; as Mahatma Gandhi had dreamt? And how should this; our greatest challenge ever; be negotiated? In this extraordinarily inspiring and visionary book; N.R. Narayana Murthy; who pioneered; designed and executed the Global Delivery Model that has become the cornerstone of India’s success in information technology services outsourcing; shows us that a society working for the greatest welfare of the greatest number—samasta jananam sukhino bhavantu—must focus on two simple things: values and good leadership. Drawing on the remarkable Infosys story and the lessons learnt from the two decades of post-reform India; Narayana Murthy lays down the ground rules that must be followed if future generations are to inherit a truly progressive nation. Built on Narayana Murthy’s lectures delivered around the world; A Better India: A Better World is a manifesto for the youth; the architects of the future; and a compelling argument for why a better India holds the key to a better world.
