Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine if a significant difference existed based on the reading achievement of 3rd grade students as measured by the Mississippi Curriculum Test Reading Scaled Score of those students who utilized the Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader Software Management Program and those who did not participate in the program. The impact of gender and ethnicity on reading achievement and the relationship between the STAR Test for Assessment of Reading and the Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT) as measures of reading achievement were also studied. The findings indicate students who participated in the Accelerated Reading Program achieved significantly higher reading scores than students who did not participate in the program. Within the Accelerated Reading Group, Caucasians earned significantly higher scores than the African-American/Other group. Female participants scored significantly higher scores than males. There was a strong association between the scores students on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment and the Mississippi Curriculum Test. The findings of this study indicated that gender, ethnicity, and the Accelerated Reading Program impacted MCT scores. There existed a strong association between scores on the Mississippi Curriculum Test and the scores on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment. Conclusions that emerged from the study suggest that Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader software when used in conjunction with the regular reading series seemed to have a positive impact on reading achievement. Recommendations for future research include investigating a possible gender bias in literature that could impact reading achievement and the impact of ethnicity on reading achievement.

Melton, Smothers, Anderson, Fulton, Replogue, & Thomas (2004) maintained teachers are the most powerful dynamic in the classroom. African American students often attain lower reading scores than other students. It is important to determine which teacher characteristics may be affecting the reading achievement of African American students when the Accelerated Reading (AR) program is utilized in the classroom. This study examined teacher characteristics and compared them to elements of the Accelerated Reader program and teaching approaches the participants may have used with their African American students to increase their reading achievement scores. The study is necessary to the field of literacy because no study exists that considers the actions of the teachers when they utilize the AR program with their African American students to increase their reading achievement scores. This study reported responses and comments of 25 teacher participants from three different elementary-middle schools. The use of quantitative data from the research-based online SurveyMonkey Pro survey and written comments from participants were considered the most effective methods of data collection and provided a logical approach to gathering information and maintaining the validity of the data. The 42-question survey instrument included multiple choice and free-response answers regarding how the participants implemented the AR program. The hypothesis predicted that the teacher characteristics would be related to all eight elements and all ten approaches. The data analysis was completed with IBM's SSPS Statistics software, Version 22, to determine statistically significant relationships. The results of the study indicated five teacher characteristics, specifically the participants' educational level, the participants' total years of teaching experience, the participants' years of using AR in the classroom, the years the participants had been teaching the current grade, and the number of school or district AR workshops the participants attended positively correlated with multiple elements of the AR program and many of the teaching approaches the participants used with their African American students to increase their reading achievement scores.

Book excerpt: The Accelerated Reader/Reading Renaissance program (now called Accelerated Reader Best Classroom Practices) is a guided reading intervention in which teachers direct student reading of text. It involves two components. Reading Renaissance, the first component, is a set of recommended principles on guided reading (or teachers' direction of students' interactions with text). Accelerated Reader (AR), the second component, is a computer program that facilitates reading practice by providing students and teachers feedback from quizzes based on the books the students read. The program gives students opportunity to practice reading books at their level, provides feedback on student comprehension of books, and helps students establish goals for their reading. One study of Accelerated Reader/Reading Renaissance met the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards. The study included 910 students from grades K to 3 attending 11 schools in a southern school district in the United States. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for Accelerated Reader/Reading Renaissance to be small for comprehension and for general reading achievement. No studies that met WWC standards with or without reservations addressed alphabetics or fluency. Accelerated Reader/Reading Renaissance was found to have potentially positive effects on comprehension and general reading achievement. [This publication was produced by the What Works Clearinghouse. Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program, a computerized reading management program marketed by Advantage Learning Systems, Inc., and student's attitudes towards reading while specifically focusing on the difference in attitudes toward reading between low achieving and high achieving students. In addition, this study describes the relationship between reading achievement and the use of the Accelerated Reader Program. This study is quasi-experimental in nature since it does not use a random sample or random assignment to groups. In order to assess student attitudes toward reading, the Heathington Attitude Scale (intermediate version) was employed. The Heathington Attitude Scale is a Likert scale, or summated rating and gives feedback about school-related reading activities such as free reading and organized reading, reading at the library, reading at home, other recreational reading, and general reading. The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests was used to assess reading achievement. These test, published by Riverside Publishing Company, are standardized achievement of reading from the end of Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each level test consists of two tests: a vocabulary test and a comprehension test. The reading passages include a balance of different genres of writing. Results of the study suggest that there is no significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student interest toward reading. Likewise, the study showed that the Accelerated Reader program did not have a significant impact on the reading interest of low achieving students when compared to high achieving students. Similarly, the data indicated that there was not a significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student reading achievement. Finally, recommendations have been presented for further research of the following:the study should be conducted using a larger sample of participants and a comparison of the increase or decrease in student interest in reading during the school year between the students using the Accelerated Reader Program and those who do not.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Accelerated Reader (AR), when it is used as a supplemental reading program in grades 3 through 8. A causal comparative design was utilized. Four research questions were investigated: (1) Do students who use AR experience more than 1year of growth in reading achievement? (2) Do students who participate in AR at different grade levels experience a difference in reading achievement growth? (3) Do students who participate in AR at different achievement levels experience different growth in reading achievement? (4) Does the level of program implementation effect reading achievement growth? The instrumentation for the study included both the North Carolina End-of-Grade Reading Test and an 18-item survey. Independent t-tests were calculated to evaluate Research Questions I and 2. In order to examine reading achievement growth between grade levels and achievement levels, the standardized growth estimate (SGE) was calculated for Research Questions 3 and 4. The results indicated that students in lower grade levels, at lower achievement levels, will receive the most benefit from AR. Furthermore, the level of program implementation is only a factor at grade 3, indicating that actual reading practice may be the critical element instead of specific programmatic guidelines. Recommendations for further research include studies designed to more effectively determine causation.

Book excerpt: Student achievement in reading comprehension has been an important topic for the past several years due to the importance of reading in education. School districts in South Carolina have had enormous amounts of pressure put on them to increase student reading comprehension through the implementation of SLOs and the Read to Succeed initiative. The School District of Pickens County has chosen to use the Accelerated Reader program in an attempt to help boost student reading comprehension. The quasi-experimental design was used during the quantitative research process to determine the effect of Accelerated Reader on student reading comprehension and student achievement. The measuring instrument used was student MAP test data from the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years. Overall RIT scores of students were compared during the Fall, Winter, and Spring administrations of MAP during both school years. The results of the study showed an increase in overall RIT for both the experimental and control groups, but there was no significant increase in student reading comprehension with students systematically exposed to Accelerated Reader and students that were not.
