Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quaker: A Study in Costume There are three distinct periods into which the his tory of Quaker dress will naturally fall - the period of persecution, when the early Friends had everything at stake, and life was to them more than meat and the body than raiment; the second, or reactionary period, when their position was established, their cause won, and prosperity, with its successes, was proving, as it always will prove, a far more dangerous foe than the perils of adversity; and the third, or modern period, when the crisis of the present brings them face to face with intricate problems, and dress again falls into its proper place in the general scheme of things. We shall see that in the face of a real issue, Quakerism disre garded the question of dress; and it is worth while to trace the growth and development of the traditional idea of Quaker costume, as it has come to be universally accepted. In other words, we shall study the Quaker in the light of a Higher Criticism, applied to the Doc trine of Clothes. The day has come, however, when the question of dress, even for the Quaker, is no longer bound up with the plan of salvation. We have him sufficiently in perspective to turn our modem camera upon him, and study the variations of this once vital question; for if it is in any degree true that "dress makes the man," certain it is that dress at one time went far to make a Quaker - at least to the world's thinking. There is a picturesque side to the story of the Quaker; he himself hardly appreciates how much of the romantic there has been in his quiet life. The trend of his thought has led him to take himself too seriously, and he has lost much of the sense of his relation to the great world around him. Quaker dress and customs have varied as the times have changed, often in a very interesting way; but perfect simplicity, uninfluenced by outside thought, is nowhere to be found in this world, short of Patagonia. Book excerpt: Scholars have debated the distinctiveness of Quaker dress since the 1901 publication of Amelia Mott Gummere's The Quaker: A Study in Costume. Gummere's involvement in the Friends' Historical Association (FHA) in Philadelphia resulted in a collection of Quaker artifacts, including a large number of garments, which now reside at the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia. This thesis first examines the definitions of Quaker dress established in clothing scholarship looking to Amelia Gummere's work. It then explores the development of the FHA collection as a Colonial Revival institution which used ancestral clothing to fashion Quaker identity in pageants and tableaux during the early twentieth century. Finally, this thesis interprets the construction and use of selected nineteenth-century women's garments as primary evidence in support of continuing discussions about degrees of "Quakerness" in Friends' clothing--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The notion of a uniquely Quaker style in architecture, dress, and domestic interiors is a subject with which scholars have long grappled, since Quakers have traditionally held both an appreciation for high-quality workmanship and a distrust of ostentation. Early Quakers, or members of the Society of Friends, who held "plainness" or "simplicity" as a virtue, were also active consumers of fine material goods. Through an examination of some of the material possessions of Quaker families in America during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, the contributors to Quaker Aesthetics draw on the methods of art, social, religious, and public historians as well as folklorists to explore how Friends during this period reconciled their material lives with their belief in the value of simplicity. In early America, Quakers dominated the political and social landscape of the Delaware Valley, and, because this region held a position of political and economic strength, the Quakers were tightly connected to the transatlantic economy. Given this vantage, they had easy access to the latest trends in fashion and business. Detailing how Quakers have manufactured, bought, and used such goods as clothing, furniture, and buildings, the essays in Quaker Aesthetics reveal a much more complicated picture than that of a simple people with simple tastes. Instead, the authors show how, despite the high quality of their material lives, the Quakers in the past worked toward the spiritual simplicity they still cherish.
