Book excerpt: The two-photon mechanism for lepton-pair production is calculated in a nonconventional way by treating the relative pion-nucleon motion in the classical limit. The results are compared with existing data for anomalous ee/sup /minus// pairs produced in the collision of 16 GeV/c pions with protons. The results for differential cross sections as a function of the invariant pair mass, Feynman x, and transverse momentum are found to be in reasonable agreement with the data. The dominant piece of the cross section arises from the magnetic, spin-flip part of the nucleon current. 14 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: We present a new measurement of the cross section for the process ee/sup −/ → e+e/sup /minus//?+?/sup /minus// at center-of-mass energy 29 GeV for invariant pion pair masses M/sub /phi//phi// between 350 MeV/c2 and 3.5 GeV/c2. For M/sub /pi//pi// above 2.1 GeV/c2, we find approximate agreement with the hard-scattering prediction of Brodsky and Lepage. In the low mass region, we observe the f2(1270), and measure its radiative width to be 3.15 /plus minus/ .04 /plus minus/ .39 keV. We also observe an enhancement in the /pi//sup +//pi//sup /minus// spectrum near 1 GeV. We hypothesize that it is the f0(975) and determine it's radiative width to be 0.29 /plus minus/ .07 /plus minus/ .12 keV. 48 refs.

Book excerpt: The two-photon mechanism for lepton pair production is investigated. It is found that for pairs produced in certain kinematical regions the process is dominated by magnetic, spin-flip currents. Anomalous ee− pairs observed in 17 Gev/c pion-proton collisions are found to be predominantly produced by this spin-flip mechanism. A comparison between 4He + 4He collisions and 3He + 4He collisions is proposed as an experimental way of distinguishing between the electric, non spin-flip mechanism and the magnetic, spin-flip mechanism. 16 refs.
