Book excerpt: "Despite global progress in understanding the epidemiology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), knowledge about the epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains limited and subject to much controversy. In the more than 25 years since the discovery of HIV, no scientific study has provided a comprehensive, data-driven synthesis of the spread of HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) in the region. Consequently, the effectiveness of policies, programs, and resources intended to address the spread of HIV/AIDS has been compromised. This report aims to fill the knowledge gap by providing the first-ever comprehensive scientific assessment and data-driven epidemiological synthesis of HIV's spread in MENA. It is based on a literature review and analysis of thousands of largely unrecognized publications, reports, and data sources extracted from scientific literature or collected from sources at the local, national, and regional levels. The resulting collection of data provides a solid foundation on which efforts to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS can be based. 'Characterizing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa' will be of particular interest to policy makers, researchers, development practitioners, and specialists in public health and epidemiology."

Although AIDS awareness among young people in Africa is generally quite high and much research has been conducted on peer education, little is known about the perception of peer education as a HIV prevention strategy. The study draws on in-depth interviews with college students in Durban. The aim of this study is to investigate perceptions of peer educators and targeted audiences about the importance of peer education. In general, attitudes towards peer education are very positive. The findings from the study suggest that students perceive peer education as a key HIV strategy for reaching young people. Peer educators also benefit from the programme as they gain both skills and experience. However, attendance at peer education activities is generally poor and few students report that they had been exposed to peer education at their college. There are a number of barriers that impede participation in the peer education programme including lack of knowledge of activities, as well as concerns about the credibility of the source of the information.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Social Work, grade: Passed, University of Leeds (School of Education), course: PhD in Science Education, language: English, abstract: The needs of young people in classroom based HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi, the extent to which current classroom practices respond to these needs, and the factors influencing these responses have been explored using questionnaires, interviews, lesson observations, and document analysis. In contrast to previously reported literature on HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi, the present study has drawn pupils’ needs directly from the pupils’ themselves, focussed on classroom practice, and triangulated the various data sets to give a comprehensive picture of HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi. Pupils identified a need for open discussion climates on HIV/AIDS issues despite a conservative cultural and religious adult world that is not open. They also identified a need for explicit and accurate knowledge on HIV/AIDS issues, opportunities to acquire behavioural skills for HIV prevention, and involvement of external speakers. The needs of the pupils have not been adequately addressed by the current classroom practice. Factors which influenced this can be linked to lack of policies that are responsive to culture and religion, ineffective and inadequate teaching policy guidelines, and lack of a policy prioritizing HIV/AIDS education by making it examinable. The findings suggest that in future, effective HIV/AIDS Education needs to be informed by the pupils’ needs. To address these needs, support from the wider society and related policies, coupled with appropriate management and classroom practice will be required. Understanding these lessons is a must for HIV/AIDS curriculum developers, policy makers and implementers in any education system.

Abstract: Background HIV/AIDS has always been a concern since it first came up in 1981 in the field of medicine and public health. The trend of overall HIV epidemic has slow down through over 30 years fighting against the disease. Yet, being the largest population nowadays, young people still face high risk of HIV/AID. Sexual transmitted diseases, similar with HIV infection, are also a serious concern in young people. Peer education is widely used in the sexual education in young people. No review focused on the school-based peer education while most young people received their sexual education in schools. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of school-based peer education on HIV/STD prevention and evaluate the factors that are likely to influence the effect of school-based peer education. Method Searching through PubMed and Cochrane Library, a literature review was carried out on the relevant articles about the evaluation of school-based peer education in developing and developed countries around the world from 2000-01-01 to 2014-05-31. Findings 10 experimental studies were chosen in this review, including 3 randomized controlled trials. Among 10 studies, 8 found significant improved about the general knowledge of HIV/STD and all studies showed positive change in attitude and risk perception in the peer-led education. However, no studies found significant effect of peer education on the behavioral change regarding condom use, postponing sexual intercourses and the reduction of sexual partners, etc. The interaction of peer education and the quality of peer-educators plus other demographical factors such as socioeconomic status and religions may influence the effect of school-based peer-led education. Conclusion School-based peer education was demonstrated to be effective on the prevention of HIV/STD in knowledge and attitude improvement, similar with other kinds of peer education. Peer educators and interactions between educators and educatees play important roles in the peer education. Yet, the effect of school-based education still requires long-term assessment. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to raise HIV and AIDS awareness while evaluating the educational strategies and policies in Ohio public schools. Approximately 53,000 Americans acquire the HIV virus each year, and at least one in four Americans who are infected with the disease do not know it. Over half of the newly infected cases are between the ages of 13 and 19 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008).The opinions of Ohio School Board members were obtained through survey research inquiring about their beliefs on whether or not HIV/AIDS education should include a comprehensive component, which would include preventative measures in combination with abstinence education in the curriculum. In addition, participants were asked if they felt that they, as well as students, parents, and school personnel in their district, had an adequate awareness of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, including the current laws, Title IX, their districts' policies that protect infected students, and other specifics surrounding HIV prevention and awareness practices. The research revealed that over 75% of respondents are in support of preventative measures being included in Ohio's curriculum. In addition, participants overwhelmingly felt that their district was not adequately equipped with the necessary information surrounding HIV/AIDS related issues.
