Book A Study of Organizational Trust and Related Variables Among Faculty Members at HBCUs

Download or read book A Study of Organizational Trust and Related Variables Among Faculty Members at HBCUs written by James Hollander Vineburgh (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trust in the workplace has been linked to higher levels of organizational performance and competitiveness. The imperative of variants of trust among a spectrum of institutional types, including colleges and universities, has been deemed to be considered essential for organizational effectiveness, stability and continuity. One variant, organizational trust, may be a particularly important factor during periods of exigency where exogenous forces may function to punctuate organizational equilibrium. This study focuses on organizational trust and associated variables (empowerment, resistance to change, support for innovation, interpersonal conflict, and demographics) as perceived by faculty in the work environment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). HBCUs and their faculties have received minor attention in terms of research related to the focal variables in this study. The study depended on an existing database that included perceived responses of faculty at HBCUs to structured items included in survey measures. Selected variables included in the study model were considered. Some 3,070 faculty members working in 73 HBCUs throughout the United States provided the data included in this study. Secondary analyses revealed that higher levels of empowerment, higher levels of support for innovation, and lower levels of interpersonal conflict were associated with higher levels of organizational trust. The relationship between perceptions of empowerment and organizational trust, moreover, was influenced significantly by levels of resistance to change and support for innovation. Implementable strategies associated with study findings were commended for initiatives designed to strengthen organizational trust in the HBCU context.

Book Faculty Perceptions of Actions of Community College Presidents that Increased Organizational Trust

Download or read book Faculty Perceptions of Actions of Community College Presidents that Increased Organizational Trust written by Joshua D. Baker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational trust refers to the tendency of individuals or groups within an organization to trust each other. Tschannen-Moran (2004) describes trust as one's "willingness to be vulnerable to another based on the confidence that the other is benevolent, honest, open, reliable, and competent" (p. 17). The purpose of this study was to research the faculty perceptions of actions of community college presidents that increase organizational trust. A single college case study was used for this study. To participate, community colleges had to be in the state of Washington, not be in a district, be at least 20 years old, and be of average size in the state, defined as having between 3,000 and 12,000 full-time enrollments. Also, the president and faculty union representative expressed willingness to support the research and indicated that the institution was an appropriate place to study organizational trust. Informants were required to be tenured faculty members with at least ten years at the college. Informants were recommended by the president, vice-president of academic affairs, and the faculty union representative. Thirteen faculty members were interviewed. Responses were analyzed and seven themes were created. Those themes were autonomy, communication, shared governance, interaction, commitment to excellence, putting people first, and shared vision. Autonomy, communication, commitment to excellence, and putting people first are very similar to those found in the Tschannen-Moran Model. However, shared governance, interaction, and shared vision all had a less direct connection to the model. Each theme consisted of many examples of actions of the president that increased organizational trust.

Book The Relationship of Organizational Trust and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Relationship of Organizational Trust and Job Satisfaction written by Phuong Callaway and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues of trust and job satisfaction have taken on a greater strategic importance in organizations since the post-Enron scandal. Without trust or the lack of it among organizational members and between management and employees, organizational communication, knowledge management, organizational performance, and involvement may tend to close down. Trust has been identified as a crucial ingredient for organizational effectiveness. A linkage between trust and job satisfaction in private organizations has been established by researchers; however, in the U.S. federal government, the linkage between organizational trust and job satisfaction has not yet been studied. This study, therefore, explores the relationship between organizational trust and job satisfaction in seven selected small, medium, and large U.S. federal agencies. This study indicated that there are no significant differences between males and females, however, significant differences in attitudes between supervisors and nonsupervisors were found regarding what good communications meant and how they interpret the question, "top management truly listens to employees' concerns." Nonsupervisors tend to disagree more frequently than supervisors. The study also found that there are significant association between gender, age group, job location, position, and occupation and agency. The differences in attitudes between supervisors and nonsupervisors about what would make communications seem good and what would contribute to the belief that top management listens to employees' concerns lead to the conclusion that there is a disconnection among organizational members and among management and employees. This disconnection may lead to mistrust, job dissatisfaction and the difficulty in attracting and retention of human talents.

Book Faculty Perceptions of Dean Transitions Does Trust Matter

Download or read book Faculty Perceptions of Dean Transitions Does Trust Matter written by Rebecca L. Woolston and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looked for factors that might have influenced faculty perceptions of new deans at a professional school in the western part of the United States. More specifically, the study explored the question of how organizational trust may have influenced perceptions of new deans and faculty willingness to trust new deans. A single case study used guided interviews as data for the interpretive analysis. The study sought to provide insight into the phenomenon of dean transitions. The study also endeavored to add new dimensions to current conceptualizations of organizational trust and culture by highlighting a previously underexplored but potentially relevant connection between trust and culture at the organizational level. The study describes faculty perceptions of the effects of decanal turnover at the school. The study also describes faculty perceptions of the school's cultural environment, as well as faculty perceptions of relations between the dean and the faculty. The study's findings suggest that respondents perceived that trust played a critical role in their perceptions of new deans at the school. The findings also suggest an overlap between the factors that respondents cited as contributing to positive perceptions of new deans and the strategies a new dean might use to build and maintain trust among the school's faculty. The evidence from the study provides tentative support for the premise that respondents' expectations concerning the preservation of cultural norms may have influenced their assessments of the trustworthiness of new deans. The findings suggest that respondents expected new deans to maintain such norms as consultation, building consensus, and establishing rapport with faculty members. The findings further suggest that respondents based their assessments of a new dean's trustworthiness, in part, on whether or not the new dean upheld these norms. The study suggests that additional research is needed to investigate individual awareness of expectations concerning cultural norms and to further explore the ways in which cultural norms may influence assessments of trust within organizational environments. Finally, the study outlines a conceptual framework that allows for the possibility of a synergistic relationship involving organizational trust, such facets of organizational culture as psychological presence, and optimism about the future.

Book The Relationship Between Organizational Trust and Organizational Productivity

Download or read book The Relationship Between Organizational Trust and Organizational Productivity written by Stephen D. Musacco and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between organizational trust and organizational productivity. The investigator predicted that a positive correlation exists between levels of organizational trust and individual productivity. Based on this author's review, it appears that this empirical study was the first since 1983 to directly investigate the strength of the relationship between organizational trust and productivity. In addition to the use of a quantitative method (N̲ = 69), the study includes qualitative methods of research to help understand the centrality of trust in the organizational setting. Two surveys were used to measure levels of trust, while the productivity measure was based upon computerized productivity records for each subject. The qualitative approach (N̲ = 10) was in the phenomenological tradition. Based on this author's review, this appeared to be the first phenomenological inquiry of trust (trusting and mistrusting interactions) conducted in the organizational setting. The findings, based on computations of the Pearson r̲, showed a nonsignificant relationship among the trust measures and the performance measure (r̲ = .14, r̲ = -.07). The qualitative results, however, provided anecdotal support that a relationship exists between trusting interactions, mistrusting interactions, performance, and job satisfaction.
