Book Seismic Response Analysis of a Multi span Curved Continuous Box grider Bridge with Multiple Supports

Download or read book Seismic Response Analysis of a Multi span Curved Continuous Box grider Bridge with Multiple Supports written by Yifan Wang and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Curved concrete box-girder bridges are widely applied in highway systems to enable traffic to move from one highway to another. The Akşemsettin Viaduct (termed A Viaduct in the current study) in Istanbul, Turkey, is a typical 11-span curved continuous bridge with a total length of 596.8 m. Located in the high seismicity zone, the A Viaduct exhibits complex seismic behaviour because varying ground motion inputs are expected to excite the bridge at different column/abutment foundations. This study investigates the seismic responses of the A Viaduct under different ground motion scenarios using nonlinear time history analyses (NTHAs). In particular, the software of OpenSees is used to develop a high-fidelity finite element model for the A Viaduct, from which seismic responses of multiple critical components are compared under uniform versus multiple support excitations. To supplement such comparisons, a literature survey is conducted regarding seismic damage to curved bridges, their soil-structure interaction effect, and the multi-support excitation scheme. Moreover, modelling considerations of key components are presented for the A Viaduct, and 6 representative groups of simulated ground motions are selected to capture the effects of site-specific surface topography and soil stratigraphy at the bridge site"--

Book Seismic Response of Bridges Supported on Lead rubber Bearings

Download or read book Seismic Response of Bridges Supported on Lead rubber Bearings written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the results of a study of the seismic response behaviour of various lead-rubber bearings, combinations of bridge piers and lead-rubber bearings, and some multi-span bridges supported on combinations of elastomeric and lead-rubber bearings. The responses were determined by using a dynamic time-history program and mathematical models to which were ascribed the properties of the structures and bearings. An artificial earthquake was generated that excited single degree-of-freedom responses matching the acceleration response spectrum used in the design of bridge structures in New Zealand's geographical Zone A. The responses described in this paper are the background material from which a seismic design method has been developed. The design method enables a designer to distribute the seismic forces between piers and abutments in a manner most suitable for the particular bridge layout. The seismic pier and abutment shear forces and bending moments are governed by the relative distribution of lead-rubber bearings and elastomeric bearings between piers and abutments. For the covering abstract of the Conference see IRRD Abstract no. 807839.

Book Nonlinear Seismic Response of Mexican Bridges with Base Isolation Accounting for Soil Structure Interaction Effects

Download or read book Nonlinear Seismic Response of Mexican Bridges with Base Isolation Accounting for Soil Structure Interaction Effects written by Bertha Alejandra Olmos Navarrete and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A parametric analysis of typical base isolated bridges was conducted. The bridges were located in different soil types and were subjected to three different earthquakes (recorded on soft and medium soils). The work had two main objectives: to asses the effects of the nonlinear behavior of the isolation pads of the bridges on the seismic responses (accelerations, displacements, and pier seismic forces), and to study combined effects of base isolation and inertial interaction due to the presence of flexible foundations. The analytical models used for the study were selected on the basis of initial evaluation of different models proposed in the literature to represent a bridge structure and to evaluate the isolation pads' nonlinear behavior. The bridges studied were developed with a three-dimensional model. After completing the studies, 2 degree of freedom models were used to investigate more general trends of the inertial SSI effects for the base isolated bridges. The results of the work show the efficiency of base isolation pads in improving the seismic performance of bridges in most cases. They suggest that the inertial SSI effects will not be generally important for bridge foundations designed with a factor of safety of 3, with more than one line of piles in either direction since they will be very stiff foundations. But they also showed that for slender piers it is important to carefully evaluate the translations on top of the piers due to the rocking effects of the foundation.

Book Seismic Resistant Structures

Download or read book Seismic Resistant Structures written by S. Ivorra and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research studies on the preparation for and mitigation of future earthquakes, an area of increasing importance to many countries around the world, comprise this volume. The selected papers included in this book have been prepared by experts from around the world in the fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures. As the world’s population has concentrated in urban areas resulting in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability, we have seen the consequences of natural disasters take an ever higher toll on human existence. Protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities, but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings, which is an important area of research. Major earthquakes and associated effects, such as tsunamis, continue to stress the need to carry out more research and a better understanding of these phenomena is required to design earthquake resistant buildings and to carry out risk assessment and vulnerability studies.

Book Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation

Download or read book Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation written by James M. Kelly and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely used in civil, mechanical and automotive engineering since the early 1980s, multilayer rubber bearings have been used as seismic isolation devices for buildings in highly seismic areas in many countries. Their appeal in these applications comes from their ability to provide a component with high stiffness in one direction with high flexibility in one or more orthogonal directions. This combination of vertical stiffness with horizontal flexibility, achieved by reinforcing the rubber by thin steel shims perpendicular to the vertical load, enables them to be used as seismic and vibration isolators for machinery, buildings and bridges. Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation collates the most important information on the mechanics of multilayer rubber bearings. It explores a unique and comprehensive combination of relevant topics, covering all prerequisite fundamental theory and providing a number of closed-form solutions to various boundary value problems as well as a comprehensive historical overview on the use of isolation. Many of the results presented in the book are new and are essential for a proper understanding of the behavior of these bearings and for the design and analysis of vibration or seismic isolation systems. The advantages afforded by adopting these natural rubber systems is clearly explained to designers and users of this technology, bringing into focus the design and specification of bearings for buildings, bridges and industrial structures. This comprehensive book: includes state of the art, as yet unpublished research along with all required fundamental concepts; is authored by world-leading experts with over 40 years of combined experience on seismic isolation and the behavior of multilayer rubber bearings; is accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kelly The concise approach of Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers/practitioners in structural and mechanical engineering departments, in particular those working in seismic and vibration isolation.
