In porous media applications, such as the environmental impact of buried nuclear heat-generating waste, chemical reactors, thermal energy transport/storage systems, the cooling of electronic devices, etc., a temperature discrepancy between the solid matrix and the saturating fluid has been observed and recognized.

Heat transfer by natural convection is studied by numerically solving equations of continuity, momentum and energy. A parametric study is carried out using the following parameters: Rayleigh number from 104 to 107, Prandtl number of 0.729, internal fin length of 0.10 m. A total of 24 cases have been considered and plotted using Fluent.

The artificial cavities were found to affect the natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal surface: the heat transfer coefficients increased with the number of cavities.
