Observation methods used to determine the directions of local magnetization in iron thin films were the Lorentz method and the Foucault method. We studied how Bloch line-crosstie pairs and crosstie main walls behave in applied, in-plane magnetic fields. We found that crosstie main walls remain unchanged until crosstie density goes nearly to zero when the field is applied perpendicular to the main wall. A twisted type of domain appears where crossties disappear.

Book excerpt: Alpha-iron is another instance of mimetic twinning in which an edifice formed by a group of twinned tetragonal crystals presents an appearance of cubic symmetry. This confirms earlier suggestions that magnetic domains are crystallographic twins. Crystals of alpha-iron were grown in thin strips of Armco iron, a large magnetic domain size confirmed by examining the Bitter pattern, the crystals examined point by point by means of Laue patterns and an oscillating crystal pattern of a crystal recorded. The Laue patterns confirm the persistence of a single crystal but shifts in relative intensities within the patterns show that clusters of differently oriented twins are illuminated by the x-ray beam at each point. The Laue pattern of a crystal shows a redistribution of relative intensities upon the application of an external magnetic field, indicating a new group of twinned orientations within the region illuminated by the x-ray beam. The pattern from a crystal, supposedly oscillating about a cubic (100) direction, shows layer lines which fit a twin lattice with a triple unit cell and twinned tetragonal crystals oscillating about (110), (001) and (100) directions. High-speed internet and data-streaming, home automation, tablets and smartphones are now "necessities" for our everyday lives. Consumer expectations for progressively more data storage and exchange appear to be insatiable. Oxide electronics is a promising and relatively new field that has the potential to trigger major advances in information technology. Oxide interfaces are particularly intriguing. Here, low local symmetry combined with an increased susceptibility to external fields leads to unusual physical properties distinct from those of the homogeneous bulk. In this context, ferroic domain walls have attracted recent attention as a completely new type of oxide interface. In addition to their functional properties, such walls are spatially mobile and can be created, moved, and erased on demand. This unique degree of flexibility enables domain walls to take an active role in future devices and hold a great potential as multifunctional 2D systems for nanoelectronics. With domain walls as reconfigurable electronic 2D components, a new generation of adaptive nano-technology and flexible circuitry becomes possible, that can be altered and upgraded throughout the lifetime of the device. Thus, what started out as fundamental research, at the limit of accessibility, is finally maturing into a promising concept for next-generation technology.
