Book Trains Buses People

Download or read book Trains Buses People written by Christof Spieler and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the best transit cities in the US? The best Bus Rapid Transit lines? The most useless rail transit lines? The missed opportunities? In the US, the 25 largest metropolitan areas and many smaller cities have fixed guideway transit—rail or bus rapid transit. Nearly all of them are talking about expanding. Yet discussions about transit are still remarkably unsophisticated. To build good transit, the discussion needs to focus on what matters—quality of service (not the technology that delivers it), all kinds of transit riders, the role of buildings, streets and sidewalks, and, above all, getting transit in the right places. Christof Spieler has spent over a decade advocating for transit as a writer, community leader, urban planner, transit board member, and enthusiast. He strongly believes that just about anyone—regardless of training or experience—can identify what makes good transit with the right information. In the fun and accessible Trains, Buses, People: An Opinionated Atlas of US Transit, Spieler shows how cities can build successful transit. He profiles the 47 metropolitan areas in the US that have rail transit or BRT, using data, photos, and maps for easy comparison. The best and worst systems are ranked and Spieler offers analysis of how geography, politics, and history complicate transit planning. He shows how the unique circumstances of every city have resulted in very different transit systems. Using appealing visuals, Trains, Buses, People is intended for non-experts—it will help any citizen, professional, or policymaker with a vested interest evaluate a transit proposal and understand what makes transit effective. While the book is built on data, it has a strong point of view. Spieler takes an honest look at what makes good and bad transit and is not afraid to look at what went wrong. He explains broad concepts, but recognizes all of the technical, geographical, and political difficulties of building transit in the real world. In the end,Trains, Buses, People shows that it is possible with the right tools to build good transit.

Book Light Rail Transit in the United States Since 1980

Download or read book Light Rail Transit in the United States Since 1980 written by Jason Bernard Greenberg and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a comparative analysis of light rail transit systems that began operating in the United States from 1981 to 1996, and it argues that when light rail transit operations are compared, the results cannot be generalized. There is great variability among ten light rail operations in ridership, operational structure, and cost and service efficiency; attempts to explain for the variation by using census data revealed even further variability. This result is a departure from the literature, which frequently forms definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of light rail transit. The impact of these results makes policy decisions difficult to undertake since the directives may not be applicable for every situation. The dissertation is divided into the following chapters: Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the topic. Chapter 2 is an introduction to light rail transit in the United States and it relies on various forms of previous works, so it also introduces some of the light rail transit literature. Chapter 3 is a specific literature review focusing on the feasibility, capacity, cost versus ridership, and development of light rail new starts in the United States. Chapter 4 introduces the methodology of the study and discusses the transportation resources used in Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is the analysis of the National Transit Database, the body of statistics used to analyze the ten cases. This chapter includes approximately 36 tables to accompany the analysis of each system's ridership and operation size as well as each operation's service effectiveness, service efficiency, and cost efficiency. Chapter 6 focuses on travel behavior and attempts to explain the results of Chapter 5 by using U.S. Census Bureau data as well as standardized data from other transportation and traffic studies. Chapter 7 concludes the study with overall findings and offers policy recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light Rail Transit Systems: 61 Lessons in Sustainable Urban Development shows how to design and operate light rail to maximize its social benefits. Readers will learn how to understand the value of light rail and tactics on its effective integration into communities. It uses strong supporting evidence and theory drawn from the author's team and their extensive experience in developing new light rail systems. The book uses numerous case studies to demonstrate how key concepts can bridge the geographic limitations inherent in many transit-related discussions. In addition, users will learn how to develop important relationships with local decision-makers and communities. Presents applied research by experienced practitioners and academic researchers Draws on more than 50 cases from Europe, the Middle East, the UK and US Incorporates five themes on why it’s important to invest in light rail, including effective mobility, and for an efficient city, economy, environment and equity Includes a checklist for planning public transport projects

Book Light Rail Transit

Download or read book Light Rail Transit written by and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1975 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes papers that cover a wide range of subjects related to light rail transit including a description of system concepts, such as performance characteristics of such transit; comparison with other modes; and applications. The technology and operational aspects of light rail transit are treated in a set of papers that address permanent way requirements, electrification and control systems, and U.S. and foreign vehicle developments. Of major significance are the economic considerations of light rail transit. A number of papers also discuss the various costs of construction, operation, and maintenance as well as social costs and benefits. The observation is made that the current trend to move away from a unimodal solution to a system that blends a number of discrete transit elements, each of which is closely tailored to demands and local conditions, should make light rail transit desirable for cities that require a fixed guideway system.

Book Urban Mobility Report 2004

Download or read book Urban Mobility Report 2004 written by David Schrank and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congestion continues to grow in America¿s urban areas. This report presents details on the 2004 trends, findings and what can be done to address the growing transportation problems. Trend data from 1982 to 2002 for 85 urban areas provides both a local view and a national perspective on the growth and extent of traffic congestion. The 2004 Report provides clear evidence that the time for improvements has arrived. Communicating the congestion levels and the need for improvements is a goal of this report. The decisions about which, and how much, improvement to fund will be made at the local level according to a variety of goals, but there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from this database.
