Book The Architecture of Light

Download or read book The Architecture of Light written by Mary Ann Steane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing the use of natural light by architects in the era of electricity, this book aims to show that natural light not only remains a potential source of order in architecture, but that natural lighting strategies impose a usefully creative discipline on design. Considering an approach to environmental context that sees light as a critical aspect of place, this book explores current attitudes to natural light by offering a series of in-depth studies of recent projects and the particular lighting issues they have addressed. It gives a more nuanced appraisal of these lighting strategies by setting them within their broader topographic, climatic and cultural contexts.

Book Annual Dynamics of Daylight Variability and Contrast

Download or read book Annual Dynamics of Daylight Variability and Contrast written by Siobhan Rockcastle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daylight is a dynamic source of illumination in architectural space, creating diverse and ephemeral configurations of light and shadow within the built environment. Perceptual qualities of daylight, such as contrast and temporal variability, are essential to our understanding of both material and visual effects in architecture. Although spatial contrast and light variability are fundamental to the visual experience of architecture, architects still rely primarily on intuition to evaluate their designs because there are few metrics that address these factors. Through an analysis of contemporary architecture, this work develops a new typological language that categorizes architectural space in terms of contrast and temporal variation. This research proposes a new family of metrics that quantify the magnitude of contrast-based visual effects and time-based variation within daylit space through the use of time-segmented daylight renderings to provide a more holistic analysis of daylight performance.
