Ideal for newcomers and established researchers in the field this book is a complete treatment of the area covering advanced topics with relevance to biomedical applications, extraction metallurgy, food chemistry and a wealth of other industrial processes and research areas. The book will be of particular interest to postgraduates with an interest in coordination chemistry, catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, metallobiology and related aspects of biochemistry.

Book Reactions of Coordinated Ligands

Download or read book Reactions of Coordinated Ligands written by P.S. Braterman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the second and final volume of Reactions of Coordinated Ligands, describes the chemistry of ligands bound through non-carbon atoms, and of coordinated carbon dioxide. As before, emphasis is on the underlying mechanisms, which provide a unity of understanding for superficially disparate processes. The wide range of topics covered illustrates well both the versatility and the usefulness of coordination chemistry in the controlled activation of ligands. Looking to the future, carbon dioxide is the feedstock of last resort. The homogeneous reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia now seems unlikely to replace the Haber process, but solution reactions also lead to more complex, varied, and valuable products. Nitrogen monoxide, a "non innocent" ligand, impinges as pollutant and reagent. Its rich chemistry stems from its linked roles as three-electron donor, and as extremely powerful -acceptor. In the hydrolysis and condensation of complexed amides, esters etc. , metals act both as templates and as tunable and poly functional Lewis acids. Here the control of hydrophobic and steric interactions begins to model the subtle mechanisms of biological specificity. Finally, phosphorus and sulfur are imporant both as ligand atoms in themselves, and as anchors for other functionalities. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the writing and production of this work, and also my colleagues old and new, at Glasgow and the University of North Texas, for their support. Book Coordination Chemistry of Multidentate Ligands from a Multi component Reaction

Download or read book Coordination Chemistry of Multidentate Ligands from a Multi component Reaction written by Ann Almesaker and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of a multi-component reaction approach has been explored in the synthesis of intricate ligands incorporating the commonly employed ligand motifs bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (bPMA) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren). The synthesis of these ligands demonstrates that multi-component reactions can be an area with high exploratory power in ligand syntheses as they have the potential to afford ligands with a diverse variety of structures by a simple methodology. The coordination chemistry of one bPMA based ligand has been examined with a range of transition metal ions (i.e. MnII, CoII and CuII). The structures of several of these products have been determined by X-ray crystallography and their properties examined by various spectroscopic methods. The complexes are discussed in terms of similarities and differences in the solid state between the different metal ions in combination with different counter ions. Mononuclear and dinuclear complexes, and one case of a 1D coordination polymer were isolated. The spectroscopic properties of copper(II) complexes formed by two analogous tren based ligands were studied. From these studies, it could be concluded that the two ligands formed analogous complexes in both solution and in the solid state. Data on three of the copper(II) tren complexes were collected using synchrotron radiation due to the small size of the isolated crystals. These complexes were found to have trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry around the mononuclear copper(II) centre. Two isomeric copper(II) nitrate complexes with minor differences in the copper(II) geometries were isolated. In addition, a copper(II) fluoride complex [CuLF]BF4·THF (L = tren based ligand) was studied which interestingly exhibited a very short Cu-F bond, in fact theshortest reported to present time. The copper(II) complexes were further investigated in catalytic oxidation reactions and small ion stabilisation studies. The complexes had poor catalytic activity in catechol oxidation and in oxidative coupling of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. However, the bPMA based copper(II) complex showed an initially relatively high catalytic activity in the oxidative coupling reaction, but underwent deactivation. The complexes were not worthy of further investigation in these reactions due to the low catalytic activity. Preliminary results pointed to the fact that the tren based ligands were able to stabilise Cu-OOH species in the solution at low temperatures (-60 and -80 °C). Such complexes are of interest in the elucidation of enzymatic mechanisms of monooxygenases such as peptidylglycine [alpha]-hydroxylating monooxygenases and dopamine [beta]-monooxygenases. These Cu-OOH complexes also demonstrated evidence of partial ligand oxidation upon warming the solutions containing the complexes.Overall a range of ligands structures with intricate structures have been synthesised by a multi-component approach and used to prepare transition metal complexes (CuII, CoII and MnII) which display interesting properties due to the unusual ligand frameworks with large pendant substituents.

Book Ligand Substitution Processes

Download or read book Ligand Substitution Processes written by Cooper Harold Langford and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of the mechanistic study of ligand substitution reactions is currently undergoing an exciting growth. New fast-reaction techniques have removed the upper limit on rates that can be measured, and extension to less familiar central metal atoms has begun in earnest. This might seem the wrong moment for review of the field. As yet, definitive treatment is possible only for those complexes involving monodentate ligands with cobalt(III) and platinurn(II). But, because information is so extensive for these systems, it is clear that they are functioning as models from which concepts and experiments are generated for application over the fast-growing range of the subject. We believe that this is an important moment to reopen debate on fundamentals so that concepts will be most felicitously formulated to aid growth of understanding. This monograph is centrally concerned with three aspects of those fundamentals. We have attempted to develop an approach to classification of ligand substitution reactions that is adapted to what seem to have emerged as the characteristic features of these reactions and is susceptible to operational tests. (We do recognize that any such scheme of ideas is necessarily obsolescent once it is formulated since new experiments will certainly follow immediately.) We have tried to evaluate the basis for making generalizations about ligand substitution processes and to formulate tests to show whether new reactions fall within familiar patterns. Finally, we have sought to base the models of ligand substitution processes in the language of molecular-orbital theory. We believe that MO theory is most useful, because it may be used to correlate rate data on complexes with the extensive information available from spectral and magnetic studies, yet differs from crystal-field theory in providing a natural place for consideration of the bonding electrons, which must be a principal determinant of reaction processes. To keep this essay within bounds, we assume familiarity with the elements of experimental kinetics, transition-state theory, and the simple molecular-orbital theory of complexes. Introductory physical chemistry, some familiarity with the study of reaction mechanisms, and mastery of one of the qualitative treatments of MO theory as applied to transition-metal complexes should provide sufficient background. Thus, we hope that this book will be useful to students, relatively early in their careers, who wish to explore this field.

Book Modified Cyclodextrins Scaffolds And Templates For Supramolecular Chemistry

Download or read book Modified Cyclodextrins Scaffolds And Templates For Supramolecular Chemistry written by Chris J Easton and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through modification, the natural cyclodextrins are effective templates for the generation of a wide range of molecular hosts. This makes it possible to tailor a cyclodextrin host to a particular guest, to meet specific requirements in the host-guest complex, and opens the way to diverse new areas of supramolecular chemistry. Metallocyclodextrins, rotaxanes and catenanes, as well as surface monolayers of modified cyclodextrins, are readily obtained. The native cyclodextrins serve as scaffolds on which functional groups and other substituents can be assembled, with controlled geometry. This results in substantially improved molecular recognition and procedures for chemical separation, including enantiomer discrimination, through guest binding. Access to the gamut of functional groups greatly expands the utility of cyclodextrins in chemical synthesis and provides catalysts which mimic the entire range of enzymic activity. Modifications to the cyclodextrins also lead to a wide range of photochemistry of cyclodextrin complexes, through which the enhancement of guest reactivity occurs; in addition, light harvesting molecular devices and photochemical frequency switches may be constructed. In solution, modified cyclodextrins have been used to construct molecular reactors, as well as molecular, temperature and pH sensors. At surfaces, they form semipermeable membranes and sensor electrodes. Such exciting fields of chemistry, made possible only through modifications to the natural cyclodextrins, are the subject of this book.

Book Late Transition Metal Polymerization Catalysis

Download or read book Late Transition Metal Polymerization Catalysis written by Bernhard Rieger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the 1950s, Ziegler and Natta discovered that simple metallorganic catalysts are capable of transforming olefins into linear polymers with highly ordered structures. This pioneering discovery was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1963. In the 80s and 90s, the development of molecular defined metallocenes led to a renaissance for non-polar polyolefin materials. Designer catalysts allowed a greater precision in defining properties of the material. The past 10 years have seen the discovery of new catalysts based on late transition metals, which allow the combination of polar monomers with non-polar olefins and thus lead to innovative materials. Here, the world's leading authors from industry and academia describe the latest developments in this fascinating field for the first time in such comprehensive detail. In so doing, they introduce readers systematically to the basic principles and show how these new catalysts can effectively be used for polymerization reactions. This makes the book an ideal and indispensable reference for specialists, advanced students, and scientists of various disciplines dealing with research into catalysts and materials science.
