Abstract: ABSTRACT With the end of British rule over Hong Kong, the territory is now facing an unprecedented new challenge; not only politically, economically, but also linguistically. The status and function of English in Hong Kong are, to a certain extent, bound to have some changes. First of all, this paper attempts to present an overview of the historical background of English in Hong Kong, with reference to its language situation and education system. Then the study proceeds to look at one of the linguistic characteristics of Hong Kong - lexical borrowing. After that, it turns to discuss the aspects of Englishization and nativization with reference to the local usage only. Lists of loanwords borrowed from both directions are included. The present study, nonetheless, is not an etymological study of the loanwords mentioned in the paper. Nor will it attempt to pass any judgement what is 'good' or what is 'bad' but only to describe the current linguistic situation in Hong Kong. It is, however, my intention to see how the complexities of the present may reflect the complexities of the past! In the final section of the paper, I have included a brief analysis on some of the 'by-products' of language contact situation; namely, code-mixing, code-switching, bilingualism, colonialism and linguistic imperialism. However, I have only alluded to these issues and it is not the scope of the present study to explore them in considerable depth. It has been argued that English in Hong Kong was never 'nativized' as in other Asian societies, and that it has not deserved the recognition accorded to other varieties of Asian English. The contributions to this book challenge that view in a number of ways. In addressing sociolinguistic, structural, and literary issues, they provide an up-to-date survey of current use of Hong Kong English, and redress the question of its autonomy in terms of both distinctive linguistic features and the growing literary creativity of the variety. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Loan Words and Code-Mixing in Hong Kong Submitted by LIN Wing Cheong for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong in August 2003 In 1982, Chan and Kwok published the paper, A study on lexical borrowing from English into Cantonese. Alongside the research, they compiled a list of English loan words in Cantonese, which is referred as the CK List in this paper. Twenty years has passed, and as new object and new concepts being constantly introduced, some of the loan words in the list may have already lost their currency in Hong Kong Cantonese, and new members have to be added to the list. The focus of this paper is on the change of popularity of the loan words in the CK List over the last 20 years to see what still survives in the list and what has to be deleted from, and if some words are to be retained in the CK List, what special features these words have. Chen Yuan ( ) points out that those phonetic loans which are still prevalent in modern Chinese are usually words of food and drinks. In this research, we try to find out if this is also applicable to Hong Kong Cantonese. It is found that words of food and drinks enjoy the highest level of popularity among words of other varieties in Hong Kong Cantonese. There are many similar researches that focus on the contact between English and Hong Kong Cantonese. However, it is obvious that the term lexical borrowing, code-mixing and also code-switching are used in different researches, and more and more researchers adopt the term code-mixing, and avoid lexical borrowing (or simply borrowing). A clarification on the definitions of these two terms is also an important part of our discussion. Finally, one's knowledge of loan words in local Cantonese in relation to the presence of a Cantonese-speaking parent and one's own history of residence in Hong Kong is another key area of interest in this research. It is found that no direct relationship is established in this study between the number of loan words a native-speaker know in Hong Kong Cantonese with one's length of residence in Hong Kong. No direct relationship between the presence of a Cantonese-speaking parent and one's lexical knowledge of loan words is found either. However, people with different length of residence history may have different set of content in their loan word stock. Some words are tended to be known by people who have lived in Hong Kong for a long time, and these words may have their currency restricted within Hong Kong. On the other hand, words that are tended to be known by people with a shorter residence history in Hong Kong are usually words which enjoy a higher popularity, not only in Hong Kong, but possibly in neighbouring areas of Hong Kong, where Cantonese is still a dominant language. Book excerpt: Contacts between English and Chinese have existed for several centuries, causing lexical exchanges between the two languages. As a result, numerous lexical items are taken from Chinese to English and vice versa. This thesis particularly focuses on Chinese contributions to the English language. Two types of analysis feature in this study. Typological analysis identifies different kinds of Chinese influence, including the most classic and recognized types of lexical borrowing; two marginal and implicit types of lexical influence, namely indirect borrowing and expressions with ethnic tags; and different Chinese varieties of English, which reflect the long history of language contact between the two languages and the recent emergence of Chinese contributions to the Western culture. In the semantic analysis, lexical borrowings from Chinese are contextualized in various semantic fields: 14 semantic sketches cover domains that have extensive reference to China and Chinese culture, while three case studies focus on some special patterns of Chinese influence on the English vocabulary in three specific areas. Both the typological and the semantic analyses show possible ways of approaching the topic of Chinese influence on the English lexicon. Additionally, this study presents a tentative taxonomy of Chinese influence, which can be applied to other languages or other kinds of language contacts. Overall, the study demonstrates the possibility of combining different methods and mixed sources to give a more comprehensive account of how Chinese influences the English language as well as to adequately reflect the contacts between two languages and two cultures.
