Book A Heretic in American Journalism Education and Research

Download or read book A Heretic in American Journalism Education and Research written by Luigi D. Manca and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past quarter of a century, journalism education, communication theory, and newswork have all changed markedly. This book reexamines MacLean's ideas in light of these changes. Student and teacher, administrator and newsman -- all will find a treasure of information for discussion. As the editors Luigi Manca and Gail W. Pieper comment in their introductory chapter: [MacLean] envisioned a new kind of journalist, a heretic, who would facilitate the communication process within society by helping all citizens to be part of public discourse. . . . And we hope a reexamination of MacLean's vision of journalism, his heresy, will help initiate long-needed changes in the way teach -- and in the way we do -- journalism.

Book High School Journalism

Download or read book High School Journalism written by Jim Streisel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school journalists share the same objectives as professional reporters--finding the story, writing the story, and packaging the story so that it appeals to an audience. Understanding how to best accomplish these objectives is key to the student on the newspaper, yearbook or Web site staff, but the fundamental art of storytelling and story presentation are not always at the center of high school journalism classes. Student journalists must first understand that storytelling, at its most basic level, is about people, and that understanding the audience is essential in deciding how to present the story. This handbook for high school journalists and teachers offers practical tips for all elements of school journalism. The author covers the essential components that students must understand: information gathering, writing, standard and alternative coverage and packaging. Students will find valuable information about identifying news, interviewing, research, narrative writing style, editing, visual presentation and layout. The book also covers the legal rights of student journalists, objective vs. opinion writing, staff planning and organization and Web-based journalism. Each chapter includes study guides for practical applications of the concepts discussed. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Private Schools and Student Media

Download or read book Private Schools and Student Media written by Erica Salkin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Schools and Student Media: Support Mission, Students, and Community explores the activities of student media outlets, content creators and advisers in K–12 private schools in the United States. The unique nature of private schools, separate from government funding but not all government oversight, creates its own opportunities and challenges for students seeking their own outlets to pursue questions, answers and voice. Through surveys and content analysis of schools, student media advisers and student media work, Erica Salkin explores the reality of censorship in private schools—where the First Amendment does not play the same role as in public schools—and the perspectives of teachers who dedicate time, effort, and expertise to make the learning laboratory of the student newspaper or yearbook a reality. Ultimately, this book proposes that student media can be a significant asset to a private school’s mission, students, and school community: to prepare young people for lives of service and good citizenship. Scholars of communication, media studies, journalism, and education will find this book particularly useful.

Book High School Journalism Confronts Critical Deadline a Digest of the Full Report Prepared by the Journalism Education Association Commission on the Role of Journalism in Secondary Education

Download or read book High School Journalism Confronts Critical Deadline a Digest of the Full Report Prepared by the Journalism Education Association Commission on the Role of Journalism in Secondary Education written by Journalism Education Association and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In cooperation with the American College Testing (act) Program, the Journalism in Education Association conducted a 2-year study to explore the status of high school journalism and, in particular, to determine factual data concerning the values of journalism in secondary education by comparing students with high school journalism/publication experience with those having no such experience. The study was divided into three parts. The first part, which compared college grades, act scores, and high school grades between students with and without high school newspaper or yearbook experience, examined 19,249 students enrolled in 10 colleges and universities who had completed at least one year of college. Results indicated that the 4,798 students who had served on their high school newspaper or yearbook scored higher than their counterparts without publications experience. The second part examined 1,204 students who had taken the act Assessment tests and the act comp Prospectus Writing test segment, in order to compare the collegiate writing samples of students with and without high school newspaper/yearbook experience. Results revealed that students with publications experience scored significantly higher than those without such experience. Finally, the third part surveyed 558 students with high school publications experience to detect influences of a journalism credit course per se in relationship to all other language arts courses that students took for credit, with results indicating the importance of journalism education as a route to good writing.
