This best-selling book by Joseph Blase and Peggy C. Kirby, now in its third edition, provides the answers from the teachers themselves. New material in this revised edition compares the authors' original research findings with recent literature on transformational leadership, school productivity, and adult learning, as well as the ISLLC and ELCC standards. Such comparisons underscore the continued timeliness and timelessness of this teacher's-eye view of effective school leadership. The book offers strategies and related practices that allow leaders to use the power of praise, influence others by using expectations and involvement, encourage professional autonomy lead by standing behind, suggest rather than direct, use formal authority positively, ideal for experienced or aspiring school principals, this enlightening and compact resource provides invaluable perspectives on how to motivate and inspire classroom teachers."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.

Book Potential Attrition in Education

Download or read book Potential Attrition in Education written by Elsje J. Hall and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to change one's job is usually preceded by a process of job evaluation and determining alternative employment opportunities. Dissatisfaction with the workplace can be a strong incentive to seek alternative opportunities. This study focuses on the role played by job satisfaction, morale and HIV/AIDS in educator attrition. The responses of educators who considered leaving their jobs were compared to the responses of those preferring to stay. Findings reveal that job dissatisfaction linked to poor salaries and limited possibilities for career development, as well as the lack of status and respect attached to the profession, may push educators out of the classroom. The low morale amongst potential leavers reflects this dissatisfaction, as well as the stress caused by curriculum transformation and the emotional impact of HIV/AIDS. Factors encouraging educators to stay in their profession included their passion for developing young people and strong collegial relationships. However, many also feel trapped by limited job alternatives, and may embark on withdrawal options such as increased absenteeism or lower outputs. It is crucially important to deal with the sources of educator frustration, lest the result becomes deteriorating service provision and quality in South African education.

Book What Factors Affect Teacher Morale

Download or read book What Factors Affect Teacher Morale written by Theresa Lynne Kilpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze factors that affect teacher morale. Thirty questions were selected from the Purdue Teacher Opinionnaire. Ten factors were analyzed: teacher rapport with principal (8 questions), satisfaction with teaching (6 questions), rapport among teachers (2 questions), teacher salary (2 questions), teacher load (2 questions), curriculum issues (2 questions), teacher status (2 questions), community support of education (2 questions), facilities and services (2 questions), and community pressures (2 questions). The questionnaire surveyed 81 teachers from four different school sites who represented four different demographic and achievement profiles. The goal is to identify factors that affect teacher morale so principals can be aware of what creates positive morale for their teaching staff. An administrative leader is aware of the factors that will enhance teacher morale. Good principal leadership will foster positive morale to the teaching staff in hopes of enhancing student achievement.
