This book was released on 1977 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study revealed the following significant findings: Propensity of veterans to enlist in their prior service branches is not as high as the propensity of the Non-Prior Service men to enlist in the Guard/Reserve in general. The education benefit and the bonus benefit offered by the services are the most cost effective for both Potential Enlistees and current Reservists. One valuable recruitment strategy determined by this study would be to explain in detail the currently available benefits. The most effective accession strategies would be those based on social and vocational self-actualization; Retention strategies promising to be most effective are concepts based on social and vocational self-actualization; family involvement in the Guard/Reserve and the value of Guard/Reserve activities; and pride in the Guard/Reserve. Money and a comfortable life are not perceived as likely to be achieved in the Guard/Reserve; thus, it would not be advisable to design accession or retention strategies around the opportunities in the Guard/Reserve to meet these life goals. Recruiters/career counselors are most frequently consulted regarding enlistment or extension of enlistment.

Book Who Stays and Who Goes Army Enlisted Reserve and National Guard Retention

Download or read book Who Stays and Who Goes Army Enlisted Reserve and National Guard Retention written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, USAR and ARNG personnel serving with their active components are a common sight and are transparent in many areas of operation. Army reserve components have actively participated in Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and for homeland security. Reserve and National Guard units provide specialist and augmentation support for active operations without reserve component support. National leadership increasingly has called upon these reserve components to replace operational active Army units as commitments grow in breadth and scope. Force commitments around the globe will ensure future mobilizations of U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) and Army National Guard (ARNG) personnel in areas away from home and under conditions not foreseen just a few years ago.

Book The Effect of Mobilization on Retention of Enlisted Reservists After Operation Desert Shield Storm

Download or read book The Effect of Mobilization on Retention of Enlisted Reservists After Operation Desert Shield Storm written by Sheila Nataraj Kirby and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1998 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses how reserve mobilizations affect the attitudes, perceptions, & behaviors of reservists, their families, & their employers. Understanding the effects of mobilizations & deployments is important because of the potential effects on retention, future recruiting, & the eventual reshaping of the reserve force in perhaps unforeseen ways. Using the 1991 Guard/Reserve Survey of Officers & Enlisted Personnel, the authors examine whether & how factors affecting reenlistment have changed since 1986--the last large-scale survey of reserve forces; examine the differences in behavior of mobilized & nonmobilized reservists to determine whether mobilization itself has had an effect on retention; & investigate whether mobilizations affected reservists' work, family environments, & economic positions.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reserve Component Attitude Study (RCAS) is an annual series from 1978 to 1982 surveying the propensity of men and women to enlist in the Selected Reserve Forces (Guard/Reserve). RCAS 1979, Issues Related to Recruitment of Enlisted Personnel for the Reserve Components, was conducted in the Fall of 1979. It surveyed 2,473 NPS males and females (17 1/2 to 26 years old) and 1,941 male and female veterans. (1st term eligible for re-enlistment). Volume I of the study contains the Major Findings and Recommendations. Overall propensities show serious declines. The data show several factors related to Propensity such as beliefs about the Guard/Reserve and about the value of Guard/Reserve participation on one's resume' and positive attitudes toward a peacetime draft registration. In addition, the study shows a need for Guard/Reserve awareness advertising because the Guard/Reserve is only somewhat different from the active military. Finally from these factors associated with propensity, a set of recommendations to enhance Guard/Reserve units; reduce distrust of job training promises; and convert negative propensity individuals to positive through the use of incentives.

Book Who Stays and Who Goes

Download or read book Who Stays and Who Goes written by Clayton K. S. Chun and published by . This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 38 pages. Reserve and National Guard units provide specialist and augmentation support for active forces. In some cases, active forces could not sustain field operations without reserve component support. Frequent and large mobilizations of units and individuals to supplement and support active forces come at a cost, not only financially, but in terms of readiness and perhaps retention. Like their active duty counterparts, USAR and ARNG forces rely strictly on volunteers to fill their ranks. If conditions become intolerable for potential recruits and existing members, these organizations may find personnel refusing to consider participation in the reserves. Perhaps a first step in determining whether the Army faces such a problem is to determine if it faces retention concerns among its forces. This monograph examines trends in USAR and ARNG enlisted members' retention. Its primary objective is to create a baseline to compare future USAR and ARNG retention and concentrates on the period from 1995 to 2002. The author compares demographic factors, such as race and martial status, to examine who stays and who leaves their respective components. These trends should provide the basis for further study and policy recommendations. The USAR and ARNG face many of the same problems as the active Army, but their situation is more complex. They face problems with their members balancing civilian and military careers, family concerns, and other challenges that can force them to leave service before the completion of a full reserve career. Three groups are examined: enlisted members with 4-7 years, 8- 10 years, and 19 years of service. These groups represent relatively junior, middle grade, and senior military members. If the junior members start to leave, the reserve component needs to work harder to recruit more soldiers. Middle grade enlisted members serve as the backbone of the reserve force and affect future senior enlisted leadership capability. If soldiers start to retire, lack of senior leadership can affect unit readiness and capabilities by forcing junior and middle grade enlisted members to take over positions and work assignments earlier than they might otherwise. This could also affect their retention. Several notable differences have occurred between the groups. Overall, the Army Reserve had a higher retention rate than the National Guard. Within all of the three enlisted groups, USAR groups had a higher retention rate than comparable ARNG ones. Retention actually increased in almost all groups over the period, despite lowered unemployment rates. During some periods of decreased unemployment, some retention rates among junior enlisted members increased, while in other cases high unemployment corresponded with lower retention. Other demographic trends include married members having higher retention rates than single members whether the person was in the USAR or ARNG. However, if one examines individuals who indicate how many dependents that member claims, the observation changes. Single members with dependents normally have greater retention rates than married members with the same number of dependents, up to a point. These observations could have significant policy implications to improve retention among particular groups, like providing health insurance or childcare that could affect retention.

Download or read book A Tracking Study Regarding Issues Related to Recruitment of Enlisted Personnel for the Reserve Components Wave I Fall 1978 written by ASSOCIATES FOR RESEARCH IN BEHAVIOR INC PHILADELPHIA PA. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RCAS 1978, 'A Tracking Study Regarding Issues Related to Recruitment of Enlisted Personnel for the Reserve Components, ' included data collected from 1,580 NPS males, 1,502 NPS females, and 1,501 prior service (Veterans) males. The following are conclusions of the 1978 study: The baseline data on propensity indicated a large pool of positive propensity individuals. Knowledge of the requirements of the Guard/Reserve is low among NPS individuals with positive propensities to enlist. The six-year initial enlistment requirement for Non-prior Service persons reduces the pool of positive propensity individuals significantly. Non-high school graduate, positive propensity Potential Enlistees are effectively barred from enlistment by the existing structure of Guard/Reserve training and duty requirements. Four strategies were generated from this study: Position the Guard and Reserves a local and part-time forces with some community service functions; change requirements for service and target the 19-21 year old segment of non-prior service males and non-prior service females; stress pride and team membership in the local guard and Reserve units; and encourage current Guardsmen and Reservists to introduce friends to the opportunities in the Guard/Reserve. This is Volume II of RCAS 1978. It is an analytical volume written for readers quantitative skills who want technical details on the study design, methodology, data collection procedures, and data analysis. (Author).

Book Reserve Accessions Among Individuals with Prior Military Service

Download or read book Reserve Accessions Among Individuals with Prior Military Service written by M. Susan Marquis and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the accession behavior of enlistees who have had prior military service either on active duty or in reserve service. The report focuses on the accession behavior of prior service reservists who served in the active Army or in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard. These reservists account for the largest number of separations, and these components have also traditionally had relatively greater problems in meeting their end-strength requirements. The authors endeavor to determine which policies appear to increase accessions among prior service personnel, placing special emphasis on reserve pay and affiliation bonuses. They investigate how skill match varies across different occupations, the timing of entry, years of service, and area demand.

Book A Model of the National Guard Personnel System

Download or read book A Model of the National Guard Personnel System written by William McNaught and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note presents a simple model of the National Guard personnel system. The model contains equations describing the supply of nonprior service accessions; the supply of prior service accessions; the total strength of the National Guard; and the demand for National Guard personnel. Results of the accession equations uphold prior studies reporting reservist supply to be inelastic. The demand equation results show National Guard authorizations to move from shortage areas to areas of relative oversupply. Although the model's exploratory nature prohibits any policy analysis based on its findings, the results suggest that the model's structure is a promising one for future Reserve research. (Author).
