Download or read book Effects of informal settlement on the surrounding environment at Majengo Slums Narok County written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Earth Science / Geography - Geopolitics, , language: English, abstract: The study was guided by the following specific objectives: To establish the extent of informal settlement in Majengo Slums, Narok County, to find out the causes of informal settlement, to assess the effects of informal settlement on the environment in the Slums and to determine the policy measures to reduce informal settlements. The study will be of great value to the government in the formulation of policies and strategies for controlling informal settlement and in addition researchers and scholars will use the study to provide the basis of future studies. To provide the basis of the study findings, the researcher relied on the following theories: Malthusian Theory of Population Growth, The Optimum Theory and Theory of Demographic Transition. Data was collected using questionnaires and guides from 96 household heads obtained through cluster sampling in Majengo Slum and 5 key informants purposively selected. It was then analyzed using Microsoft Excel Package presented in tables percentages. People residing in informal settlements face challenges of service delivery. This is mainly due to the fact that land was occupied illegally, thus impacting negatively on the environment. It was in the background of the above problem, that this study sought to establish the influence of informal settlement on the surrounding environment.

Book Water and Sanitation in the World s Cities

Download or read book Water and Sanitation in the World s Cities written by Un-Habitat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is surely the most impressive and important publication to come out of the UN system for many years.' Peter Adamson, founder, New Internationalist, and author and researcher of UNICEF's The State of the World's Children from 1980 to 1995 The world's governments agreed at the Millennium Summit to halve, by 2015, the number of people who lack access to safe water. With rapidly growing urban populations the challenge is immense. Water and Sanitation in the World's Cities is a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the problems and how they can be addressed. This influential publication by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) sets out in detail the scale of inadequate provision of water and sanitation. It describes the impacts on health and economic performance, showing the potential gains of remedial action; it analyses the proximate and underlying causes of poor provision and identifies information gaps affecting resource allocation; it outlines the consequences of further deterioration; and it explains how resources and institutional capacities - public, private and community - can be used to deliver proper services through integrated water resource management.

Book The Security development Nexus

Download or read book The Security development Nexus written by Lars Buur and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between security and development has been rediscovered after 9/11 by a broad range of scholars. Focusing on Southern Africa, the Security-Development Nexus shows that the much debated linkage is by no means a recent invention. Rather, the security/development linkage has been an important element of the state policies of colonial as well as post-colonial regimes during the Cold War, and it seems to be prospering in new configurations under the present wave of democratic transitions. Contributors focus on a variety of contexts from South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia, to Zimbabwe and Democratic Congo; they explore the nexus and our understanding of security and development through the prism of peace-keeping interventions, community policing, human rights, gender, land contests, squatters, nation and state-building, social movements, DDR programmes and the different trajectories democratization has taken in different parts of the region.

Book Unfinished Business Democracy in Namibia

Download or read book Unfinished Business Democracy in Namibia written by Bryan M. Sims and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idasa's Democracy Index - initially developed for South Africa - is being expanded into Southern Africa in an effort to broaden the capacity of individuals and organisations monitoring and supporting democratic governance efforts in the region. This inaugural Democracy Index for Namibia is intended to set a benchmark for democracy to be measured against. The tool assesses the country's depth of democracy through five focus areas: participation, elections, accountability, political rights, and human dignity. The research relies on expert analysis to answer a set of questions that interrogate how closely, in practice, democracy meets the broad ideal of self-representative government. More specifically, to what extent can citizens control elected officials and government appointees who make decisions about public affairs? And how equal are citizens to one another in this accountability process? The purpose of the scores is to assist citizens in making their own judgements, based on the information made available, to stimulate national debate and to provide democracy promoters with a tool for identifying issues and needs that can be addressed by education, advocacy, training, institution building and policy revision.
