Book Introduction to Hydrometeorology

Download or read book Introduction to Hydrometeorology written by J. P. Bruce and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Hydrometeorology is the study of the hydrolic cycle, which is the circulation of water from the seas, into the atmosphere, and back to either land or sea. This book describes hydrometeorology or the application of meteorology to problems that pertain to hydrology, and then discusses the approach, through meteorology, to the solution of hydrologic problems. This text outlines observation methods on the subject and discusses the applications of hydrometeorology to problems encountered in the study of river and lake behaviors. Topics include precipitation, melting of ice, streamflows, lakes, evaporation, and evapotranspiration. The frequently used methods in analysis, such as employing statistics to hydrometereological problems, precipitation analysis, and streamflow routing are explained. This text also shows how extending streamflow records can be helpful in predicting the regime or course of a stream in the future. Records of seasonal and annual flow, flood runoff, peak discharge, as well as seasons of low flow and drought become useful tools in estimating the frequency and magnitude of streamflows. After which, the book discusses possible engineering designs in irrigation, storm sewers, and reservoirs. The text looks into the ways how human has influenced the hydrologic cycle through induced precipitation, melting of ice covers, and urbanization. Lastly, some climactic trends and cycles that bring about climate change and water resource development are discussed. This text can be used by students studying hydrology and those with meteorology majors. This book can also be read by meteorologists, environmentalists, and people working in general earth sciences.

Book An Investigation of a Perennially Frozen Lake

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perennially-frozen Angiussaq Lake, Greenland was examined in 1957 to determine the strength of its midsummer ice cover and the causes of its perennially-frozen conditions. The lake, largest within a 100-mi radius of Thule Air Base, is formed by ice-cap damming of a valley 200 m deep, and has an elevation of 590 m. Water temperatures ranged from 0.1 to 0.7 C and showed that summertime mixing is sufficient to maintain nearly isothermal conditions. Fish, phytoplankton, AND CHIRONOMID LIFE WERE FOUND IN THE LAKE WATER. At the end of the 1957 summer, more than 90% of the lake surface was covered by ice averaging 1.5 m in thickness. Variations in melting rate have caused a gently rolling surface that might be smoothed by flooding or scraping. In-place cantilever beam tests showed that the upper half meter of ice had almost no strength but that the lower portion maintained sufficient strength to support heavy loads throughout the summer. A tongue of glacier ice floating in the lake has a thickness of about 100 m and a length of about 3 km. Five smaller ice islands have thicknesses of more than 5 m and are believed to form where snow accumulation exceeds ablation. (Author).

Book The Salinity Distribution in Young Sea Ice

Download or read book The Salinity Distribution in Young Sea Ice written by W. F. Weeks and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted at North Star Bay (NW Greenland) during Oct-Nov 1956 to examine the lateral and vertical salinity variation in known types of natural sea ice. Sampling procedures and data analysis are described in detail. The data show that the standard deviation of the salinity values from closely spaced cored samples in sheet ice are always equal to or greater than!0.3%. In pancake ice, the standard deviation is usually!1.0%. This uncertainty will produce a standard deviation of approximately! 4 to 6% of the total brine volume in the sheet iceAND! ll to 19% in pancake ice. This accounts for a considerable portion of the scatter observed in studying the strength properties of sea ice. (Author).
