Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to online graduate course effectiveness, and graduate student perceptions of characteristics of online learning environments and their effectiveness, and to explore the relationship between graduate student perceptions and student success in online courses. The research methodology employed was that of survey research, using the Graduate Student Online Learning Environment Survey instrument, targeted at graduate students enrolled in online courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A total of 238 graduate students participated in this study. Findings revealed that approximately 87.4% of graduate students reported positive online learning experiences. Participants identified themselves as highly self-directed learners. Several critical individual characteristics including marital status, employment status, student status, future enrollment planning, enrollment in online programs, and number of online courses played a moderating role in online graduate students' online course learning. However, based on the data from this study, no relationships were found among levels of age, gender, race/ethnicity, and previous online course experience and graduate students' online course learning perceptions. Only a small portion (3.4%) of graduate students who responded to the survey reported online course non-completion in the fall semester of 2014.

They shifted between confrontation and conciliation, ratcheting up tension yet also embarking on peace initiatives. Tao Wang offers a new account of Sino–American relations in the mid-1950s that situates the two great powers in their international context. He reveals how both the United States and China adopted a policy of attempting to isolate their adversary and explores how Chinese and American leaders perceived and reacted to each other’s strategies. Although the policy of the Eisenhower administration was to contain China, Washington often overestimated Chinese aggressiveness, worrying allies and neutral states. Sensitive to the differences within the Western camp, Chinese leaders sought to convince American allies to persuade the United States to back down. Wang analyzes diplomatic maneuvering over a peace settlement in Indochina, an American defense pact with Taiwan, and the anticolonial Bandung Conference, showing how political pressure pushed American leaders to make concessions. He challenges the portrayal of Communist states as driven by ideology, showing that Chinese leaders adopted a pragmatic policy during these crucial years. Drawing on Chinese, Taiwanese, Russian, Vietnamese, British, and American archival material, including reclassified Chinese Foreign Ministry documents, Isolating the Enemy offers new insight into Chinese diplomacy in the 1950s and U.S. foreign policy under the Eisenhower administration through a nuanced portrayal of Sino–American interactions.

Book excerpt: This research examined the levels of perceived stress for independent students who are parents with a comparison group of independent students who are not parents. The programs and services offered to adult learners at Iowa State University were evaluated. Role conflicts, support systems, support detractions, sources of stress, and sources of stress relief were explored for both groups. Participants completed the Graduate Student Inventory-Revised (GSI-R), a background questionnaire, a service assessment, and open-ended questions. Using independent samples t-tests, no significant differences in perceived levels of stress were found between the primary sample and the comparison group. Additional correlation analyses revealed that students who are parents are older, have higher monthly take home income, are married or single but cohabitating, and are enrolled in fewer credit hours. Females were more likely to experience monetary stress than males. As monetary stress increased, classroom attendance decreased. Students with more children had higher academic demands perceived stress. Single (unmarried, divorced, separated, or widowed) students had higher levels of environmental perceived stress. Working students and students receiving less help from ISU Orientation had greater levels of perceived stress trying to meet peers of their race/ethnicity on campus. Independent students with children and the comparison group of independent students differed in their use and the importance of specific services for students at ISU. However, most of those differences were related to services designed specifically for students with children. Students with children and the comparison group had both similar and different kinds of conflicts that arose amid their student role and other roles. The two groups identified similar support systems. For both groups, many of the same support systems were also identified as detractions. The two groups identified both similar and different sources of stress and the two groups relieve their stress in different ways. Significance of the study, limitations, and implications for future research are also presented.
