Book Full scale Room Fire Experiments Conducted at the University of Maryland

Download or read book Full scale Room Fire Experiments Conducted at the University of Maryland written by James A. Milke and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two full size furnished bedrooms were burned, June 5 and June 6, at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute Facilities. These burns were performed for two cooperating agencies: the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency of the Treasury Department who used them as part of their Certified Fire Investigator training, and the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of NIST, who used them for forensic research. It was intended that these two burns be identical, to see if close analysis of the results would find differences. There were differences, possibly due to small differences in the inflow of ventilation air. In both cases, ignition was caused by burning newspaper on an upholstered chair. This report describes the test arrangement and instrumented results.

Book Full scale Room Fire Experiments

Book excerpt: Two full-size furnished bedrooms were burned, September 19, at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute Facilities. These burns were performed for two cooperating agencies; the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency of the Treasury Department, who used them as part of their Certified Fire Investigator training, and the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who used them for forensic research. It was intended that these two burns be identical, to see if close analysis of the results would find differences. Some differences were noticed possibly due to small differences in the inflow of ventilation air. In both cases, ignition of a gasoline spill next to an upholstered chair was used to initiate the fire. This report describes the test arrangement and instrumented results.

Book Experimental Study of the Effects of Fuel Type Fuel Distribution and Vent Size on Full Scale Underventilated Compartment Fires in an ISO 9705 Room

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Effects of Fuel Type Fuel Distribution and Vent Size on Full Scale Underventilated Compartment Fires in an ISO 9705 Room written by Andrew Lock and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes new full-scale compartment fire experiments, which include local measurements of temperature, heat flux and species composition, and global measurements of heat release rate and mass burning rate. The measurements are unique to the compartment fire literature. By design, the experiments provided a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of major and minor carbonaceous gaseous species and soot at two locations in the upper layer of fire in a full scale ISO 9705 room.

Book Experimental Study of the Three Dimensional Internal Structure of Underventilated Compartment Fires in an ISO 9705 Room

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Three Dimensional Internal Structure of Underventilated Compartment Fires in an ISO 9705 Room written by Nist and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a set of 9 full scale ISO 9705 room under-ventilated compartment fire experiments for the purpose of guiding the development of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) computer fire model - Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The gas species composition and temperature throughout the interior of the compartment was mapped during quasi-steady burning conditions using movable measurement probes. In conjunction with the gas species and temperature measurements, global heat release rate, global burning mass rate, and local heat flux measurements were taken. The tests yielded detailed maps. From the data collected, the mixture fraction (with and without soot included in the calculations), local equivalence ratio, carbon monoxide and soot yields, fractional carbon monoxide and soot ratios, and combustion efficiency for each test were determined. Results from ethanol (a low sooting fuel) and heptane (a mildly sooting fuel) are presented. The results collected in this set of experiments were also compared and contrasted to the results of similar tests done in the previous report in this series of testing, NIST Technical Note 1603: Experimental Study of the Effects of Fuel Type, Fuel Distribution, and Vent Size on Full-Scale Underventilated Compartment Fires in an ISO 9705 Room.

Book Full Scale Room Burn Pattern Study

Download or read book Full Scale Room Burn Pattern Study written by Anthony D. Putorti and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One method fire investigators use to determine the cause and origin of a fire is the study of patterns or "indicators" left on building components or building contents by the fire. Previous studies have shown that some traditionally used indicators have little or no technically defensible basis. In order to study the patterns or "indicators" produced by fires, full scale experiments were conducted using test rooms furnished as residential bedrooms. Temperatures and heat fluxes at various locations in the rooms were measured. In some cases, the concentrations of oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were measured. This report describes the experimental setup, measurement results, and the post fire inspection of the rooms.

Book Flame Spread of Carpet Systems Involved in Room Fires

Download or read book Flame Spread of Carpet Systems Involved in Room Fires written by King-Mon Tu and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that given a situation where a chair or other item of furniture becomes the first item to burn in a room (providing the ceiling and walls are noncombustible), there is little reason to expect involvement of the carpet in the fire beyond the immediate vicinity of the burning object. Four small sized carpet fire tests and eight full-scale burn room fire experiments were conducted. Experimental data for temperature distribution and incident heat flux to the floor covering were measured in the rooms. General analysis of the experimental results obtained show this to be the case. It is also evident that the critical radiant flux of the floor covering system is predictive of the extent of burning. From this study, carpet systems used in rooms will not normally spread fire provided they meet the requirments of DOC FF 1-70 (the pill test).

Book Data for Room Fire Model Comparisons

Download or read book Data for Room Fire Model Comparisons written by Richard D. Peacock and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1993-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the types of analyses that can be used to examine large-scale room fire test data to prepare the data for comparison with zone-based fire models. The base of experimental data ranges in complexity from one room tests with individual furniture items to a series of tests conducted in a multiple story hotel equipped with a zoned smoke control system. Graphs and diagrams.

Book Nist Technical Note 1736

Download or read book Nist Technical Note 1736 written by U.s. Department of Commerce and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a set of 9 full scale ISO 9705 room under-ventilated compartment fire experiments. The gas species composition and temperature throughout the interior of the compartment were mapped during quasi-steady burning conditions. Particular focus is placed on minor carbonaceous gas species and soot. Fire protection engineers, fire researchers, regulatory authorities, fire service and law enforcement personnel use fire field models such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) for design and analysis of fire safety features in buildings and for post-fire reconstruction and forensic applications.
