Book Effects of Foreign Aid

Download or read book Effects of Foreign Aid written by Hiroaki Sakurai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the impact and effectiveness of foreign aid or official development assistance (ODA) from several aspects, as in the exemplary case of Thailand—factors that are important for formulating growth and fiscal policies to use foreign aid efficiently. Specifically, the book is devoted to analyzing the belief among aid practitioners that foreign aid, aimed mainly at wider access to social infrastructure, is one of the important elements for increasing living standards. Thailand has attained economic growth and poverty reduction while it has been receiving foreign aid for more than 50 years, with Japan providing one of the major portions of that aid. However, there is no established theory in the field of economics and related disciplines about whether foreign aid helps developing countries to improve the livelihoods of the poor. According to the analysis advocated in this book, foreign aid to Thailand contributes to economic growth. Moreover, the Thai government generally has governed foreign aid well and maintained sound management of finance primarily by reducing domestic borrowing as an alternative to foreign aid. The book shows that a kind of inter-dependent strategic relation has been established and managed well among aid agencies. These results, introduced by long-term data, are consistent with widely accepted ideas, while the effect of foreign aid itself is still under discussion. This book is intended to answer the needs of aid donors and policymakers as well as researchers and Ph.D. students. In addition, it suggests that other developing countries following similar policies should look to evidence from Thailand to reinforce their own cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Groups and the Thailand Economy examines the role of business groups, specifically state, local, and foreign capitals in the economic development of emerging economies and highlights why business groups are essential in helping a country break out of the middle-income trap. Wailerdsak reviews Thailand’s industrial and economic growth strategies through the local and international investors and explains why business groups are one of the key drivers of economic advancement and why they help to avoid the middle-income trap. The author also examines their business power expansion methods, including selection and specialization, political influence, mergers and acquisitions, outward FDI and business alliances. The book concludes with policy recommendations of how the government can engage business groups to accelerate high-tech industrialization and create jobs. The middle-income trap issue faced by Thailand would be of interest to many emerging economies, especially scholars and policymakers researching on Asian business and management, Asian economies, developmental economics, political economy, policy studies, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, and private company strategic management in emerging countries.

Book A Study of China s Foreign Aid

Download or read book A Study of China s Foreign Aid written by Y. Shimomura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new perspective of China's controversial foreign aid strategy. The chapters offer a thorough examination of data to show how China has created knowledge in its long experiences of aid and how this accumulated knowledge could contribute to other developing countries. The book also examines China's aid philosophy and strategy through an Asian perspective, instead of the Western perspective that is postulated in existing academic literature. This is important as China shares a number of common features with other Asian donors, including India and Japan. Finally, the book explores how to utilize the potential effect of this rising major donor for worldwide development and poverty reduction.
