Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Metastable Austenitic Stainless Steels

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Metastable Austenitic Stainless Steels written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research reported here is an investigation of the influence of the mechanically induced martensitic transformation on the fatigue crack growth rate in 304-type steels. The alloys 304L and 304LN were used to test the influence of composition, the testing temperatures 298 K and 77 K were used to study the influence of test temperature, and various load ratios (R) were used to determine the influence of the load ratio. It was found that decreasing the mechanical stability of the austenite by changing composition or lowering temperature decreases the fatigue crack growth rate. The R-ratio effect is more subtle. The fatigue crack growth rate increases with increasing R-ratio, even though this change increases the martensite transformation. Transformation-induced crack closure can explain the results in the threshold regime, but cannot explain the R-ratio effect at higher cyclic stress intensities. 26 refs., 6 figs.

Book Specimen Size Considerations in Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing

Download or read book Specimen Size Considerations in Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing written by LA. James and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of specimen size upon the fatigue crack growth rate behavior of annealed AISI Type 304 stainless steel was studied at two stress ratios at an elevated temperature. The resulting data were examined in the light of the present ASTM size criterion (based upon monotonic yield strength) and a proposed criterion based upon the material flow strength. The flow stress criterion is considerably less restrictive than the present ASTM criterion. The results of this study indicate that the flow stress criterion is entirely appropriate for strain-hardening materials such as austenitic stainless steels.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature written by P. Shahinian and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resistance to fatigue crack growth of annealed stainless steels, Types 304, 316, 321, and 348, was determined at 77, 800, and 1100 F (25, 427, and 593 C). Crack growth rates were related to the stress intensity factor range (?K). With increase in temperature the rate of crack growth for a given (?K) increased. At room temperature the four steels had the same resistance to crack growth. However, at high temperatures crack growth became sensitive to the differences in composition and properties among the steels. At 1100 F (593 C), Type 348 steel had the greatest resistance to crack growth and Type 316 the lowest resistance. As a result, fatigue life was 3.4 times longer for Type 348 steel over Type 316 steel at this temperature. The characteristics of high-temperature fatigue crack growth were examined.

Book A Review of Fatigue Crack Growth of Pressure Vessel and Piping Steels in High temperature Pressurized Reactor grade Water

Download or read book A Review of Fatigue Crack Growth of Pressure Vessel and Piping Steels in High temperature Pressurized Reactor grade Water written by W. H. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth data sets, for pressure vessel and piping steels, in reactor-grade water environment have appeared in various reports and publications since about 1972. All of the results which have been published from 1972 through 1979 have been plotted and are presented in this report. Beginning with a discussion of the need for these data, and an explanation of the laboratory facilities which are required for this research, this report goes on to describe the overall trends which have evolved through consideration of the data sets and the conditions under which they were generated. A model for hydrogen assisted fatigue crack growth is described and applied to the pressurized water reactor type of environment. A complete listing of references is included in the report. Book Fatigue crack Propagation and Residual Static Strength of PH 15 7 Mo TH 1050 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Fatigue crack Propagation and Residual Static Strength of PH 15 7 Mo TH 1050 Stainless Steel written by C. M. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack propagation and residual static-strength data from tests on 2-inch (5.1-cm) wide sheet specimens made of PH 15-7 Mo (TH 1050) stainless steel are presented in this report. In addition, the capabilities of McEvily and Illg's crack-growth analysis and Kuhn and Figge's residual strength analysis to correlate the test data have been investigated. Kuhn and Figge's equation for calculating the stress concentration factors for cracks was used in both analyses. Analysis of the data showed that the crack growth and residual strength analyses satisfactorily correlated the majority of the test data.
