Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Farm Animals During the past decade the subject of agricultural edu cation for our secondary schools and colleges has received much attention. Prior to this period a number of general texts on agriculture for schools, elementary in character, pre pared by men trained in general science or classics, were published. These texts had a limited distribution, partly because Of lack of interest in the subject by teachers and pupils, and partly because of the methods of presentation. These authors saw no way of handling the subject, except ing by a more or less stereotyped style, in which chemistry, or some natural science, furnished the reasoning basis. The establishment of agricultural colleges, equipped with farms, and working laboratories of greenhouses, orchards, gardens, field crops, and stables with their contents of farm animals and utensils, paved the way to a new and interest ing treatment of agricultural subjects. The introduction of popular short winter courses about 1890, was the first im portant step in this direction. Simple laboratory exercises in dairying, horticulture, and live-stock judging, appealed to students, and added much to the popularity of the in struction. As an outgrowth of these has come the great popular movement in America in behalf of agricultural edu cation. Not only the colleges, but many secondary schools have adopted agricultural courses, and some have been equipped with farms and laboratories, where the students are taught the relationship of principles to farm practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types and Breeds of Farm Animals The need for such a volume as this will no doubt be best expressed by a demand for it on the part of live-stock students. The author, however, desires to call attention to the fact that not since 1888 has a volume devoted to the breeds of horses, cattle, sheep, and swine been published in America. The most recent work devoted to the breeds entirely omitted a considera tion of the horse. Further than this but very few books have thus far been published in the English language that have been strictly breed studies. This book differs somewhat from others that have preceded it. A number of breeds have received recognition for the first time, these being the ass, the mule, the angora and milch goats, all animals of importance in certain localities. The more important or better known breeds have received more detailed considera tion than those which may be regarded as the lesser known, and have been so ranked in the make-up of the book. In numerous instances much new historical information has been gathered. During the past twenty years a great amount of evidence bear ing on breed merit has been secured at the agricultural experi ment stations, at expositions, on race courses, and at fair grounds. In the breed reviews in this work much of this recent evidence is given a place. Brief consideration is also given to some of the more important foundation families or tribes, and to individual animals that have made a deep impression upon the breed. The author has taken the liberty of commenting on the weak as well as on the strong points of the breeds, but this has been done in a nonpartisan spirit, in harmony with the views of capable critics. Book The Nutrition of Farm Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nutrition of Farm Animals Classic Reprint written by Henry Prentiss Armsby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of Farm Animals The manner in which the subject Of the nutrition of farm animals is presented to the student will naturally' differ ac cording to the ultimate end in view. If the prime purpose is to impart practical skill in the feeding of live stock, the study of the principles of nutrition is likely to be regarded as pre liminary and to partake of the nature of an information course, and chief stress will be laid upon familiarity with the results of experience, particularly as related to the business aspects of the subject, and to the acquisition of practical Skill. But while by no means disposed to minimize the significance of this aspect of the subject, the writer is nevertheless convinced that for the students of our agricultural colleges a somewhat different procedure is desirable. He believes that greater emphasis than they sometimes receive may wisely be laid upon the chemical and physiological laws which underlie the practice of feeding, both on account of their intrinsic importance and because the subject may thus be made a real collegiate disci pline which shall contribute to the training as well as to the information of the student. Book Physiology of Farm Animals Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physiology of Farm Animals Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by F. H. A. Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of Farm Animals, Vol. 1 Many of the functions of the body are essentially similar throughout the whole animal kingdom, and among Vertebrates there is a still closer likeness. Thus the processes of digestion in a frog, a bird, a rabbit, a horse, and a man are broadly speak ing Similar, though there are of course very marked differences which are generally greater the less closely related the animals are. So also the general laws governing the nature of nerve impulses, the movements of the heart, or the processes of repro duction are identical in every case. Thus by investigating any of these processes in a frog or in a rabbit, for example, we can learn a great deal about the functional activities of a horse, or a sheep, or a cow; and it is desirable that before specialising upon the Physiology of farm animals we should possess a general knowledge of the principles of the science obtained by studying whatever animals are most convenient for this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Foods: Or the Rational Feeding of Farm Animals As long ago as the year 1868, when the first edition of my 'Practical System of Manuring' appeared, I had pledged myself to bring out a companion volume, in which the nutrition of the body and the economy of Farm Food-stuffs should be treated on similar lines. But at the same time I expressed my intention of reserving the work until the principles underlying its teaching had been placed upon a clear and systematic basis. The science of Agricultural Dietetics was then beginning to assume definite proportions, and from the great energy with which it was being prosecuted it seemed more than probable that in a very short time it would attain a position which would enable it to offer practice a firmer and sounder support for the acceptance of the latest scientific principles. In my opinion that time has now come. Thanks mainly to the rich harvest of results which has rewarded the zealous labours of the Munich School of Physiology, the general laws of animal nutrition, as well as those of flesh- and fat-formation in the animal body, are now clear and patent; the necessary investigations which were so admirably executed by Voit and Pettenkofer have attained a present conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Animals: Horses, Cows, Sheep, Swine, Goats, Poultry, Etc Horses are required on the farm for saddle purposes, driving and ordinary farm work although on more extensive farms with various lines of industry there may be required some more detailed classifications of their usefulness. Horses are not raised exclusively for farm work, however, and farmers who wish to breed horses for sale must first acquaint themselves with the require ments of the market along this line. In general two t pes of horses are recognized on the market, name y the draft and light types. These two types are essentially different from each other. The draft horse is heavy of body and the length of the body is relatively much shorter than in the light type. The only use of the draft horse is to haul loads of greater or less weight, usually. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Animals: Tillage and Cultivation Harrowing, dragging, rolling, or planking are only continuation processes to pulverize and aerate the soil, to increase the capillarity, preserve the film moisture, and encourage the growth of beneficial soil bacteria by control of soil temperature and ventilation. Harrowing should follow plowing as nearly immediately as possible so that soil moisture may be prevented from escaping, and that the hard parts or clods may be pulverized before they have become hardened by the escape of the soil moisture. Many very successful farmers plow no more soil than can be harrowed the same day. The roller and the planker, because of their weight, press down upon the soil so heavily that the soil parti cles are brought close together, and incidentally crush clods not broken up by the harrow. The harrow or the planker fines the surface. The so-called disc hai row, when set at the proper angle, packs the soil far below the surface and re-establishes capillarity between the plowed and unplowed soil. By packing the subsurface and the surface by the disc har row and the roller or the planker, much can be done to retain soil-moisture and to increase the upward movement of film water. Horses hitched to tillage implements help to compact the soil by walking over it. After the soil has been broken up by plowing, it must be firmed to give root contact and support. Time in preparing a seed-bed is always well spent. The conditions that favor the growth of the desired crop also favor the growth of weeds, which crowd the cereals and take plant food and soil moisture. When the seed-bed is well prepared and the seed, wheat, corn, clover, radish, turnip, etc., - is planted, loss of moisture by evaporation and by weed growth must be prevented and air permitted to enter the soil. Cultivation may begin before the plants have appeared above the surface. Harrowing destroys thousands of young weeds and at the same time breaks any crust which a rain and warm sunshine may have caused. When the corn cultivator is first used, it should be set to cultivate deep to allow air to enter the soil and become thoroughly mixed with it; after root development, the cultivation should be shallow, so shallow that the stirring of the soil means nothing more than the making of a mulch or loose soil blanket that will permit air to enter the soil, but will prevent rapid loss of moisture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Farm Animals To meet what was regarded as a real need in secondary schools and short courses, in 1912 the author prepared a book entitled "Beginnings in Animal Husbandry," the first text of its kind in this field of education, prepared for students below college grade. The reception given this volume by educators was very gratifying to the author. In the passing years, however, much new material has accumulated, and courses of study have been introduced that were not generally given in 1912, and for which no provisions were made in "Beginnings in Animal Husbandry." The author has, therefore, seen fit to prepare a new text, that should more fully meet present needs. It not only discusses the feeding, care, and management of animals with some detail, as applied to horses, cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry, but considers other subjects of present-day importance. These include community breeding, something about wool, boys' and girls' live-stock clubs, co-operative live-stock shipping, and culling the poultry flock. It also contains besides these, all the more important matter relative to breeding, the breeds, and judging, as set forth in the first text. "Beginnings in Animal Husbandry" consisted of 28 chapters, including 393 pages and 217 illustrations, while the present text contains 44 chapters, 540 pages and 256 illustrations. In conclusion the author would quote the final sentence of the Foreword in "Beginnings in Animal Husbandry": "It is his earnest hope that such lessons as either teacher or pupil shall find within these pages, may result in a desire for yet wider knowledge of and a more sympathetic interest in, farm animals." Download or read book The Principles of Animal Nutrition written by Henry Prentiss Armsby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Animal Nutrition: With Special Reference to the Nutrition of Farm Animals The past two decades have not only witnessed great activity in the study of the various problems of animal nutrition, but they are especially distinguished by the new point of view from which these problems have come to be regarded. Speaking broadly, it may be said that to an increasing knowledge of the chemistry of nutrition has been added a clear and fairly definite general conception of the vital activities as transformations of energy and of the food as essentially the vehicle for supplying that energy to the organism. This conception of the function of nutrition has been a fruitful one, and in particular has tended to introduce greater simplicity and unity into thought and discussion. Much exceedingly valuable work has been done under its guidance. While it points the way toward even more important results in the future. The following pages are not a treatise upon stock-feeding, but are an attempt to present in systematic form to students of that subject a summary of our present knowledge of some of the fundamental principles of ani mal nutrition, particularly from the standpoint of energy relations, with special reference to their bearings upon the nutrition of farm animals. Should the attempt at systematization appear in some instances premature or ill-advised, the writer can only plead that even a temporary or tentative system, if clearly recognized as such, may be preferable to unorganized knowledge. The scaffolding has its uses, even though it form no part of the completed building. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Principles of Feeding Farm Animals Classic Reprint written by Sleeter Bull and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Feeding Farm Animals This volume is an outgrowth from a class manual written several years ago by the author for the use of elementary students at the University of Illinois in a general course in stock-feeding. Inasmuch as there has been some little demand for the class manual from outside sources, the author has rewritten the original manuscript and added a number of valuable illustrations and tables. An effort has been made to present the scientific facts underlying the art of feeding animals in such a manner that the book will not only be suitable for use as a text for college courses in general feeding, but will also be valuable to the farmer who has not had a technical education in agriculture. Thus it has been deemed wise to omit many minor details and a large part of the mass of experimental data from which the general conclusions are deduced. In the first six chapters the author has discussed the scientific aspects of the subject and has attempted to present them in a simple, concise manner so that they may be easily understood, not only by the student but also by the feeder who desires to familiarize himself with the scientific principles underlying the art of stock-feeding. A large number of drawings and photographs illustrating points in the discussion should be of great value in this connection. Download or read book Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Classic Reprint written by Charles S. Plumb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Agricultural education under these conditions lagged, and how to encourage interest became a serious problem with the colleges. Educators insisted that the teaching should be largely based on pure science, and it was Often difficult for the students to see the application. Recognizing this lack Of interest, a few Western colleges conceived the plan Of giving short winter courses of a popular nature, in which practical laboratory instruction should be given. Work in dairying, horticulture, and live stock judg ing first received attention. This practical training was most favorably regarded by the students. These winter courses grew rapidly in popularity, and paved the way for more attractive forms of instruction for the regular students. Through this medium of the short winter Course, both interest and attendance in the agricultural colleges rapidly grew. New courses of study were established, more buildings and equipment were required, and then agricultural education sprang into popularity. The production of new types of text books, on subjects heretofore undiscussed in pedagogical form, logically followed in this evolution in agricultural edu cation. During this movement in behalf Of rural uplift, a few progressive men urged the importance of agricultural educa tion in the country schools of higher grade. This resulted in establishing agricultural schools Of secondary grade in different parts of the United States, both North and South. During the past few years, country life has become popular. As a result, there is a widespread movement in behalf of agricultural education, and the subject is now being taught in its various phases in many schools all over the land. Recognizing the need of an elementary text book for young people, the author has seen fit to prepare this volume on animal husbandry, the first of its kind devoted to this special field. It is his earnest hope that such lessons as either teacher or pupil shall find within these pages, may result in a desire for yet wider knowledge of and a more sympathetic interest in our farm animals.
