Book An Investigation of the Factors that Motivate K 12 Christian School Teachers to Participate in Professional Development and the Relationship to Job Satisfaction and Retention

Download or read book An Investigation of the Factors that Motivate K 12 Christian School Teachers to Participate in Professional Development and the Relationship to Job Satisfaction and Retention written by Bonita Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to advance knowledge by examining the reasons that motivate teachers to participate in professional development and the relationship to teacher job satisfaction and retention in Christian-based K-12 Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) member schools. The study contributes to the literature in the field because of very limited research on Christian-based schools, especially with regards to professional development, job satisfaction and retention. The study was a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational research design using two instruments, i.e., the Participation Reasons Scale (PRS) and the Job Satisfaction/Retention/Demographic Survey. The PRS scores indicated that the motivating factors for teachers to participate in professional development in rank order were: (a) professional commitment and reflection; (b) professional improvement; (c) personal benefits; (d) professional service; and (e) collegial learning. However, the PRS results did not reveal a significant correlation to job satisfaction or retention. In addition, the data related to on-line versus face-to-face delivery format, gender, marital status, age, level of education, years in education, and years in K-12 do not predict teacher participation in professional development opportunities.

Book A Study of Factors that Impact Teacher Job Satisfaction in Rural Schools

Download or read book A Study of Factors that Impact Teacher Job Satisfaction in Rural Schools written by Michael Bumgartner and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing body of research suggests that low job satisfaction among teachers may lead to undesired consequences for educators, students, and communities. The greatest impact appears to be a high rate of attrition among teachers, which is growing (NCTAF, 2007). Teacher effectiveness, teacher retention, and student achievement can be directly impacted and correlated to teacher satisfaction with the job or the extent of satisfaction teachers feel concerning the teaching profession. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of teacher job satisfaction in rural schools in a western state, as well as to attempt to reveal specific factors that lead to job satisfaction in education. Data was gathered utilizing the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS), created by Dr. Paul Spector (1985). The JSS assesses job satisfaction in nine subscales including pay, promotion, supervision, nature of work, operating conditions, coworkers, communication, fringe benefits, and contingent rewards. Each of the nine subscales can be classified as either an extrinsic or intrinsic satisfier, as noted by Herzberg et al. (1959). The two subscales of extrinsic satisfaction means and intrinsic satisfaction means served as the dependent variables in the study. The independent variables were the ten demographic characteristics provided by respondents to the JSS and included gender, age, ethnicity, marital status, highest level of education, elementary or secondary level of teaching, type of community where the teacher grew up, salary, years of experience, and the number of schools in which the teacher has been employed. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) were conducted on the independent and dependent variables in order to answer the research questions and to understand if any significant differences existed among the variables. The two dependent variables in this study were the extrinsic and intrinsic mean scale scores from the JSS. If differences were indicated by MANOVA tests, follow up post hoc analyses were conducted to detail where the differences were found. No significant differences were found for the independent variables of gender, ethnicity, type of community where the teacher grew up, and number schools in which the teacher had been employed. Significant differences were found for the independent variables of age, highest level of education, elementary and secondary grade level taught, years of teaching experience, and salary. Rural schoolteachers in the age category of 21-30 with the level of education of obtaining a Bachelor Degree, making a salary of $30,000-$40,000, and from 0-5 years teaching experience expressed higher intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction than older, more educated teachers with more income and more experience in the teaching field. Teachers in all demographic categories expressed higher intrinsic satisfaction with the job than extrinsic. These findings were remarkably similar across all five school districts where the JSS was conducted.

Book A Phenomenological Study on Motivational Factors Toward the Longevity of Christian School Teachers

Download or read book A Phenomenological Study on Motivational Factors Toward the Longevity of Christian School Teachers written by Rochelle Ancheta Achuff and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe factors that influenced the motivation of teachers toward longevity in Christian schools located in the Southeast region of the United States. This study attempted to answer the following research question: What do Christian school teachers perceive as motivational factors toward longevity in a Christian school? The theory that guided this study was London’s (1983) career motivation theory as it relates to what motivated teachers to teach long-term in a Christian school. Findings from this study provided a description of what Christian school teachers perceive as motivating factors toward longevity in a Christian school. The primary source of data collection was in-depth interviews with 12 participants, in addition to a questionnaire and a focus group interview. Using Moustakas’s (1994) method of data analysis, collected information was coded and described to give a rich description of what teachers perceive as motivational factors toward longevity in Christian schools. Factors that contributed to the motivation of Christian school teachers toward longevity in a Christian school are: spiritual impact, calling, love of teaching, student interaction, and school support
