Book excerpt: As an outgrowth of "A Study of Exemplary Mathematics Programs," conducted at the Northeast Regional Exchange in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a panel of experts rated 150 school mathematics programs that had submitted evidence of excellence in student outcomes, for example, high test scores, exceptional course enrollments, significant awards, notable successes for female and minority students, and special success with mathematical enrichment programs. A panel of experts then visited 28 of these schools, singly or in pairs, to find evidence for the factors and the conditions predicated to be associated with excellence in precollege mathematics, namely: (1) a high valuation of mathematics achievement effectively communicated to students; (2) an emphasis on frequent homework with extensive feedback; (3) a flexible curriculum geared to maximize individual student success; (4) a curriculum developed and owned by the staff; (5) a school climate consistently favorable to high expectations; (6) a classroom environment supportive of student hypotheses and conjectures; (7) efficient and productive use of class time by both students and teachers; (8) considerable commitment to extra time for instruction and preparation by teachers; (9) exemplary programs characterized by lack of non-instructional distractions; and (10) an overriding professional atmosphere that stimulates participation. From the 28 schools visited, 10 school mathematics programs were selected for inclusion in this document because each of them exemplified at least 1 of the 10 success factors proposed. Effective leadership appears often in these stories, as do careful decisions about the curriculum and its implementation, but the most important theme involves the growth of teachers and the development of their teaching. Also included is an annotated bibliography, and a list of recommendations from this study. (JJK)

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined the inclusion program of students receiving special education services in a general education mathematics classroom at an exemplary middle school in the southern region of Texas. This study sought to identify the best practices of a highly effective middle school mathematics inclusion program. This study examined the school's model of inclusion, the roles of administrators, diagnosticians, special education teachers, general education teachers, and paraprofessionals in the students' educational program, professional development for special and general education teachers and paraprofessionals, and the decision-making process for students to take either the accommodated or modified version of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. The researcher utilized in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis to collect data. The collected data was analyzed using a three-step coding process of open, axial, and selective coding. A descriptive narrative of the case was constructed, and themes were identified. The themes that emerged in this study were quality leadership, quality staff, instructional strategies, interventions, and "whatever it takes".

Book Mathematics and Multi Ethnic Students

Download or read book Mathematics and Multi Ethnic Students written by Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics and Multi-Ethnic Students provides detailed profiles of teachers across the nation who have implemented effective mathematics instruction for diverse student populations. In this revised edition, Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy expands upon the popular case studies and adds two new chapters to highlight the latest educational research and practices that are reflected in the case studies. A third new chapter introduces the concept of the Life-Long Learning Laboratory where courageous questions on issues such as the impact of race on student learning are discussed. Featuring useful framing tools including the Discussion with Colleagues and Commentary sections, Mathematics and Multi-Ethnic Students translates concrete instances of access and equity into generalized problem-solving methods for promoting ethnic diversity across grade levels. An important resource for pre-service and in-service educators, researchers, administrators, and policy makers, this volume highlights the work of teachers who have gone beyond mere awareness of reform recommendations in mathematics instruction. By uniting the goals of multicultural education with those of the mathematics curriculum, educators will learn to conceptualize and implement best practices for effective, equitable teaching and learning of mathematics for their students.

Book Mathematics Education in a Context of Inequity Poverty and Language Diversity

Download or read book Mathematics Education in a Context of Inequity Poverty and Language Diversity written by Mamokgethi Phakeng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to the career of Jill Adler and the role she has played in growing mathematics education research in South Africa, Africa and beyond. Her work epitomises what is referred to as the ‘engaged scholar’: i.e. doing rigorous and theoretically rich research at the cutting edge of international work in the field which at the same time contributes to critical areas of local and regional need in education. Jill is one of the world’s leading experts in mathematics education research and her exemplary career is a continuous source of inspiration for generations of researchers and students. The chapters in this volume are authored by Jill’s former PhD students, a few select colleagues from different parts of the world that she collaborated with as well as leading scholars who she worked with in PME, ICMI and in her many international assignments. In essence, this volume celebrates Jill’s contribution not only to mathematics education but also to our contributions as her friends and colleagues. Topics covered include language and mathematics, teacher education, and the dilemma of an activist researcher engaging in issues that matter hugely to the participants in the research, students and teachers in post-apartheid schooling, whilst also setting up the separation that is needed for good research.

Book Transforming Mathematics Instruction

Download or read book Transforming Mathematics Instruction written by Yeping Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-05 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys and examines different approaches and practices that contribute to the changes in mathematics instruction, including (1) innovative approaches that bring direct changes in classroom instructional practices, (2) curriculum reforms that introduce changes in content and requirements in classroom instruction, and (3) approaches in mathematics teacher education that aim to improve teachers’ expertise and practices. It also surveys relevant theory and methodology development in studying and assessing mathematics instruction. Classroom instruction is commonly seen as one of the key factors contributing to students’ learning of mathematics, but much remains to be understood about teachers’ instructional practices that lead to the development and enactment of effective classroom instruction, and approaches and practices developed and used to transform classroom instruction in different education systems. Transforming Mathematics Instruction is organized to help readers learn not only from reading individual chapters, but also from reading across chapters and sections to explore broader themes, including: - Identifying what is important in mathematics for teaching and learning emphasized in different approaches; - Exploring how students’ learning is considered and facilitated through different approaches and practices; - Understanding the nature of various approaches that are valued in different systems and cultural contexts; - Probing culturally valued approaches in identifying and evaluating effective instructional practices. The book brings new research and insights into multiple approaches and practices for transforming mathematics instruction to the international community of mathematics education, with 25 chapters and four section prefaces contributed by 56 scholars from 10 different education systems. This rich collection is indispensable reading for mathematics educators, researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, and graduate students interested in learning about different instructional practices, approaches for instructional transformation, and research in different education systems. It will help readers to reflect on approaches and practices that are useful for instructional changes in their own education systems, and also inspire them to identify and further explore new areas of research and program development in improving mathematics teaching and learning.
