Book A Study of Excitations During Collisionally Induced Electron Detachment of Negative Ions

Download or read book A Study of Excitations During Collisionally Induced Electron Detachment of Negative Ions written by M. G. Menendez and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the double differential cross sections for the electron detachment of the negative ion of hydrogen upon collision with atomic targets were made around 1 MeV. The double differential cross section at and near zero degrees in the laboratory frame for the single electron detachment was found to account for all of the structure seen in the total (non-specific) double differential cross section. Although quantitative data do not yet exist, it is clear that the double electron detachment process does not contribute significantly to the total double differential cross section at zero degrees. Hence, the non-specific cross sections were used to investigate details of the angular, incident energy, and target dependencies of the structure. The results strongly indicate that a portion of the structure is a manifestation of leaving the final state projectile, the hydrogen atom, in an excited state. A modified version of the electron energy analyzer which permits measurement of Lyman alpha photons coincident with ejected electrons was completed. This version of the analyzer will be used to measure directly the electron energy spectrum coincident with excitation of the hydrogen atom to the 2p state.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research has had its main thrust the detailed investigation of the electron loss processes of H- in collisions with neutral atoms (mainly He) and some measurements associated with projectile excitation in ion-atom collisions. Measurements have been made on the energy spectrum of detached electrons at a laboratory scattering angle of zero in coincidence with Lyman-alpha photons from the excitation and subsequent decay of H(2p) produced during the process, H- + He becoming H(2p) + e- + He*, at 0.5 MeV incident ion energy. It was found that this electron energy distribution mimics the so-called very sharp peak feature of the doubly differential cross section previously measured under e- and H coincidence conditions. This result shows that excitation of H is responsible for the very sharp peak and that the detached electron energy distribution associated with H(2p) is significantly different from the distribution associated with the production of H(1s).

Book Electron Molecule Interactions and Their Applications

Download or read book Electron Molecule Interactions and Their Applications written by L Christophorou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-Molecule Interactions and Their Applications, Volume 1 presents a comprehensive account of electron-molecule interactions in high- and ultra-high-pressure gases and liquids. Topics covered include elastic scattering of electrons by molecules; excitation, ionization, and dissociation of molecules by electron impact; electron-molecule resonances; and electron attachment and detachment processes. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a discussion on non-resonant elastic scattering and rotational excitation of molecules by electrons, followed by a review of non-resonant vibrational and electronic excitation. The reader is then introduced to resonance effects in electron scattering; electron-induced ionization and dissociation of molecules; and electron-molecule resonances. The ionization mechanisms and types of ions produced are highlighted, along with differential ionization cross sections. The final two chapters focus on electron attachment and detachment processes, paying particular attention to modes of electron capture by molecules such as via negative-ion resonant states. The collisional dynamics for a few selected atomic reactants are also described. Physicists will find this book extremely helpful.

Book Collisional Electron Detachment From NO by Rare Gases

Download or read book Collisional Electron Detachment From NO by Rare Gases written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model is proposed to explain earlier measurements of electron detachment from NO- by He, Ne, and several diatomic and triatomic molecules. The measurements have been extended to include detachment by Ar with a rate constant of 2 x 10(exp -14) cu cm s(exp -1) at 500K. The previously puzzling inefficiencies are satisfactorily explained by a mechanism in which NO- (v = 0) is vibrationally excited to NO- (v = 1), followed by autodetachment. The data are analyzed with Landau-Teller theory alter invoking the principle of detailed balance. Ab initio - calculations of the NO- interactions potentials with He, Ne, and Ar have been made. Range parameters derived from Landau-Teller plots - and ab initio calculations are in the range expected although not in exact agreement. The ab initio potential attractive wells make clear why the necessary vibrational excitations in He and Ne collisions with NO- (and hence collisional detachment) are far more effective than in the case for Ar. This appears to be the first application of Landau-Teller theory to a negative ion.
