The sample for the study consisted of 152 students (30 boys & 39 girls of class IX and 35 boys & 48 girls of class XI respectively) studying in Hindi medium U P Board schools of Allahabad city. The tools used were Environmental Awareness Test and Scientific Attitude questionnaire of K. S. Misra. Product- moment coefficient of correlation was computed for the analysis of the data. The environmental education conference at Tbilisi (USSR) in 1977 identified its ultimate aim as creating awareness, behavioural, attitudes and values directed towards preserving the biosphere, the quality of life everywhere as well on safeguarding ethical values and cultural and natural heritage, including holy places, historical landmarks, works of arts, monuments and sites, human and natural environment, including fauna and flora and human settlements. The Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education (UNESCO, 1978) recommended the primary categories of the environmental education curriculum goals and objectives of (a) awareness, (b) knowledge, (c) attitudes, (d) skills, (e) participation.

The federal mandates have triggered new curriculum policies and the compulsory teaching of environmental and sustainability education at all levels in all education institutions. This volume examines the policy practice conundrum. It looks at how national and international policy reforms reach practitioners – in this case teacher educators. Furthermore, it unravels how teacher educators understand environmental education, the ways in which they negotiate its demands on their busy schedules, what helps them in determining relevant issues within this and finally how they implement these policies in their everyday practices. It is evident from this book that while there have been some really well meaning development of policies, their impact on teacher educators’ practice, and therefore student teachers’ learning about Environmental Education is limited. Book excerpt: The environmental movement of the 1960s made educationists in some parts of the world aware of the significance and importance of ecology in curricula at all levels of education, from kindergarten to post-secondary. A great deal of progress was made in the early 1970s in incorporating environmental awareness programs into educa tional systems go that what was once considered a fad was gradually becoming a part of formal education in a number of institutions, especially in Canada and the U.S.A. It was therefore appropriate that an international scientific body devote some time to the issue of ecology in education. Early in 1976, I suggested to the International Association for Ecology (Inteco1) that a symposium on Environmental Education be included in the program of the Second International Congress of Ecology scheduled to be held in Jerusalem in September 1978. In the first draft program of the Congress, the topic was included as a poster session. I considered this inadequate and appealed to the Congress Steering Committee to focus greater attention on environ mental education. The first draft program contained phrases like "utilization of resources", "conservation problems", "environmental moni toring", and "irreversible changes". These phrases more or less assumed that people in general understood ecological principles. Literature on environmental education seems to suggest that a wide gap separated most of the professional ecologists from a large portion of mankind primarily because we the ecologists have paid scant attention to the ecological education of world's citizens.
