Book excerpt: This research sought to understand the experiences and perceptions of first-generation, low-income (FGLI) students enrolled in their first semester of a dual enrollment program (DEP) in a rural county in the southeastern United States. The study followed a basic qualitative design. Participants enrolled in their first semester of college courses during the 2019-2020 school year, were first in their family to attend college, and qualified for the Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL) program. Eight participants were selected, one from each of the following categories: male and female, White and non-White, and high- and low-grade point averages. Data were collected during three interviews and coded by In Vivo, Emotion, Process, and Pattern coding during the analysis process. Five themes were uncovered through the data analysis process including college readiness skills, anxiety, support systems, interactions, and persistence. Implications for practice are provided, including teacher recommendations and surveys within the application process and creating a mentor program to provide support systems for the students. Future research is suggested to include studying the differences in experiences and perceptions of FGLI students in DEPs at 2-year and 4-year colleges, the difference in persistence rates in academic and technical courses for the DEP at 2-year colleges, the differences in anxiety and self-confidence levels for female and male students, and the experiences and perceptions of FGLIs in a DEP during the Covid-19 global pandemic. Book excerpt: This study explores the associations among community college student perceptions and short-term success in college. Guiding the study are two research questions: (1) what is the association between participation in dual enrollment and subsequent college success for CTE students formerly enrolled in dual credit secondary programs and those who were not, and (2) how do CTE students' perceptions of their college experiences differ between CTE students formerly enrolled in dual credit secondary programs and those who were not enrolled in those programs? Study participants were students who were formerly enrolled in dual credit programs at the secondary school and those who were not. Previous literature indicates that students who participate in career and technical education (CTE) programs offered in high school are more motivated and successful in college CTE programs than those who were not. Dual enrollment isn't only for high-achieving students; it also can benefit first-generation students, minority students, and low-income students. This study examined associations among variables in the intervention and comparison groups. Data were gathered from an online survey and the Student Information System (SIS) at College of the Desert to examine students' experiences, perspectives, and motivation in college. These data were then analyzed using chi-square and t-test analyses. The intervention group had higher course completion rates than the comparison group, the only statistically significant difference among all associations that were tested. The intervention group had higher rates of intention to transfer to a four-year college than the comparison group but these differences were only marginally significant. Differences in low-income status and first-generation status were observed between the intervention and comparison groups but these differences also were only marginally significant.

Book excerpt: This particularistic qualitative study examined the perceptions of 18 students' dual credit experience and the viewpoints of three administrators. While limited in scope, this study makes an important contribution to what is currently known about dual credit experiences from students that have graduated with a dual degree at the completion of high school. Primary data collection occurred through individual interviews with the students and with the administrators. Nine themes were identified from the qualitative analysis of the students' interview responses and 10 themes were identified from analysis of the administrators interview responses. Student themes related to influence, the dual credit experience, student decisions/choices, value, desire to continue, dual credit concerns, advice to high school students, and the top three advantages to a dual credit program. The student participants reported that, while the dual credit experience had been challenging, the program resulted in positive educational outcomes, time savings, cost savings, and access to college courses. Administrator themes related to the dual credit enrollment process, influence, the student experience, support systems, student choice, outcomes of acquiring a dual degree, impact of dual degree status on pursuit of higher education, degree completion, advice for dual credit students, and the future of dual credit programs. While the three administrator participants valued the dual credit program, each provided a unique view of the program. The findings from this study may help to improve future dual credit experiences for the students and help to create a favorable relationship between the community college and high school. Conclusions drawn from the findings were reported. Implications for policy, research, and practice were identified. Recommendations were made for further research.

While this is promising, a notable amount of students do not attain a degree. This scenario can create major consequences for the United States as global competiveness requires a workforce that possesses a postsecondary degree. Dual enrollment is a program that has been seen to answer the need for more postsecondary graduates. Despite the robust literature that suggests the positive effects for students who participate in dual enrollment, limited research exists on the effects of dual enrollment on the institution. Therefore, this study attempted to fill the gap in the literature by examining the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. The independent variable was participation in dual enrollment and the dependent variables were persistence rates and degree completion. The population consisted of 5,251 first-time, full-time students in the Mississippi Community College System. Of this number, 741 had taken at least 1 dual enrollment course between the fall of 2010 and the spring of 2015, and 4,510 had no previous dual enrollment experience at all. A Chi-square test was used for both research questions. Results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference in persistence rates when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to maintain consistent enrollment (69%) at the community college than students who had no previous dual enrollment experience (45%). There is also a significant relationship between students attaining a degree in a timely manner when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to earn a degree in 3 years (61%) than students who did not participate in dual enrollment (35%). The effect size for both research questions was small. While the outcomes of this study are positive, it is imperative to continue to examine the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. Policy differences at each of the Mississippi community colleges could render different outcomes for the students and ultimately affect the institution.

Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship of student participation in Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit and the need of advanced training beyond secondary levels. It examines the demand and need for high school students to participate in collegiate level work while still attending high school. In addition, the study explores instructional site location and articulation of degree progression, as well as other available concurrent enrollment programs. It focuses on administrative support along with the interest of involved stakeholders. This study uses descriptive and inferential statistics for each hypothesis and research question to analysis the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program at Jefferson State Community College. Means, standard deviations, ANOVA's, contingency tables, and chi-squared goodness of fit test are used to measure the effects of taking courses while still attending high school Research question and null hypothesis one examination of data is to query if a difference exists in race, gender, and estimated family income based on choice of program participation. The results show that there are significant differences in the dependant variables, participation in the two programs, based on two of the independent variables race and estimated family income. Research questions and null hypotheses two and three were designed to investigate if instructor assignment bias and instructional location had a relation to grade distribution. The main purpose of this study was to statistically analyze the different group's means. Statistically, the dependant variables, grade point averages were found to be comparable between instructional locations but not comparable as a result to instructor assignment. Research questions four and five analyze student and faculty perceptions of experiences in the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program over a four year period. Student's overall perceptions of their experiences in Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit for this specific study were very positive. This study shows that most inquiries have more than an eighty percent strongly agree/agree satisfaction rating from students and faculty who participated over the four-year studied co-hort Educational Institutions can benefit from this study by examining the end result of a collaborative partnership and have additional tools to make the appropriate decision to create, continue or suspend these types of programs.

Book excerpt: Research shows that students who participate in dual enrollment are more likely than their peers to finish high school, enter college and complete a degree. This means dual enrollment can greatly benefit students in rural areas, which report lower college-going and postsecondary attainment rates than other locales. However, rural areas face unique challenges in providing high-quality dual enrollment programs: (1) Securing qualified instructors, either high school teachers who have the qualifications to lead college-level courses or postsecondary instructors; (2) Covering program costs, as many rural districts face declines in enrollment and the funding that follows students in many states; and (3) Addressing program logistics, including the challenges of offering a course to a small number of students and offering career/technical education coursework when high schools may not have the latest technical equipment but the nearest community college is a long drive away. This report will discuss how states are rising to these challenges, including these examples: (1) A public-private partnership in Ohio includes funding to help eight colleges and universities create and administer an 18-month master's degree with a teacher-friendly schedule; (2) Texas authorizes workforce investment funds to support dual enrollment programs targeted to address the needs of high-demand fields; and (3) Ten states authorize a course to be offered at a location other than a high school or college, easing travel burdens. This includes Illinois and Wyoming. A final section will address the opportunities posed by delivering dual enrollment through tribal colleges. State policies are often silent on the inclusion of tribal colleges in dual enrollment programs. However, one state, New Mexico, created a tribal college dual credit program fund to address this issue.

Book excerpt: Dual enrollment programs have become prominent across the U.S. Several studies show positive outcomes including increased high school completion, improved postsecondary persistence, and higher college degree completion. This study evaluated one dual enrollment program offered by a mid-sized community college in Wyoming. This research was the institution's first formal assessment of dual enrollment with respect to students' academic preparation for college, social/personal preparation for college, ability to transfer credits, and overall program satisfaction. The purpose of the research was to provide educators and policy makers with information useful for program improvement and National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) accreditation. A survey administered in July 2009 provided data for this study. Five null hypotheses were tested utilizing chi-square analysis. Findings were: (1) dual enrollment prepared students academically for the challenges of college, (2) dual enrollment enhanced students' understanding of the college student role, (3) dual enrollment did not help students make college/career path decisions, and (4) students were very satisfied with their dual enrollment experience and recommended the program to others. Number of dual enrollment credits acquired had the most significant relationship with improved academic preparation while location of dual enrollment classes (college or high school campus) had the most impact on students' social acclimation.

Book excerpt: A three-year study tracking outcomes for approximately 3,000 students across California shows that career-focused dual enrollment programs can provide important benefits for those who are underachieving and underrepresented in higher education. Dual enrollment, which allows high school students to take college courses and earn college credit, was once geared primarily toward high-achieving students seeking greater academic challenge. The Concurrent Courses initiative comprised eight programs involving 10 colleges and 21 high schools across California. Among participating students, 60 percent were students of color and 40 percent came from non-English speaking homes. Extensive evaluation shows that program participants, compared with other students in their districts, were: (1) More likely to graduate from high school; (2) More likely to transition to a four-year college rather than a two-year college; (3) Less likely to take basic skills courses in college; (4) More likely to persist in postsecondary education; and (5) Accumulating more college credits. Policymakers and community leaders can build on the lessons learned from the Concurrent Courses initiative and further reduce the barriers to program development and student participation. Based on the experience and outcomes attained in high schools and colleges across California, here are three high-value recommendations for state policymakers: (1) Remove funding penalties; (2) Make dual credit earning consistent and portable; and (3) Standardize broad student eligibility.
