Download or read book A Study of Direct and Indirect Illumination Classic Reprint written by Alexander McDougall Simons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Direct and Indirect Illumination In order to compare different systems of illumination there must be some means of comparison. Consequently we have the candle power, foot candle, mean spherical candle and etc. The candle power is the unit by which the intensity of a source is measured. Thus a light is said to have an intensity of one candle power when it has the same intensity as a sperm candle which burns 20 grams of sperm in 10 minutes. This is the English unit of intensity. The German unit is 9 of the English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Comparison of Indirect and Direct Illumination

Download or read book Comparison of Indirect and Direct Illumination written by Valentine Bernard Habrylwicz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparison of Indirect and Direct Illumination: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering; College of Engineering, University of Illinois, 1912 Illumination may be classified under two heads, useful and scenic. Useful illumination is used for carrying on work, taking the place of daylight. Scenic illumination applies to all forms of decorative lighting such as the stage, etc. The two as a rule are not distinct, but usually combine with one another. Until the introduction of the electric light about a quarter of a century ago, flames were the only source of artificial light. The electric light has brought a great change in the method of illumination, making it a science as well as an art. Book Street Illumination of Champaign

Download or read book Street Illumination of Champaign written by Edward Myron Jasper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Street Illumination of Champaign: Thesis If a light source has an average intensity in all directions of one candle-power, the light from that source is equal to one mean spherical candle-power, or simply one mean spherical candie. The density of the light flux falling upon a surface is termed the illumination of that surface. The unit of illumination, as commonly used in this country, is the foot-candle and denotes the illumination at a surface, every point of which is one foot from a light source whose luminous intensity is one candlepower. A term closely connected with the term illumination, and which is of great importance in lighting is luminosity. From the definition given above, illumination is the measure of the light flux which falls upon or strikes a surface. Luminosity is a measure of the density of the light flux given out or diffused by a surface. The relation between the two terms is that the luminosity of a surface reflecting or diffusing light is equal to the illumination received by the surface multiplied by a constant called its coefficient of absorption. This principle has a decided bearing upon the use of frosted or Opaque globes surrounding light sources and also upon indirect illumination. Book Illumination and Photometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illumination and Photometry Classic Reprint written by William Elgin Wickenden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illumination and Photometry The preparation of this volume was undertaken with a view to providing an adequate text-book of the subject for the use of colleges of engineering. It is not intended to be a handbook of technical data nor a manual of practical instructions. Emphasis is therefore given to the scientific basis of the subject and to methods of rational analysis rather than to the description of processes of manufacture, structural details and prevailing practice. A condensed form of treatment has been sought throughout. In the work of instruction much of the subject-matter may profitably be amplified by lectures, supplementary reading and the working out of problems. Familiarity with the technique of photometry should be sought in the laboratory in connection with such a course. The material herein contained to a large extent represents the basis of a course in Illumination and Photometry given by the University of Wisconsin, and the author acknowledges with pleasure much helpful encouragement and many suggestions from Prof. Murray C. Beebe of that institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Illumination

Download or read book Illumination written by Alexander Pelham Trotter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illumination: Its Distribution and Measurement This book is intended to advance the subject of illuminating engineering or the art of directing and adapting light. It is divided into three parts. The first deals with the primary and the derived units of light, the theory of the distribution of illumination and the application of that theory to the spacing and the height of lamps. The second part describes instruments and methods employed for measuring light and illumination. The last part gives a few practical examples of the measurement of illumination. "The art of illumination," wrote Count Rumford in the year 1789, "although it is undoubtedly one of the most useful that has been invented by man, and contributes perhaps more than any other to his comfort and convenience in all countries and in every class of society, has not even been considered as an art; for the technical terms have not been invented which are indispensably necessary in order to render it possible to treat of it in a clear and satisfactory manner." One hundred and three years later, on May 10, 1892, a paper, of which the present volume is an expansion, was read before the Institution of Civil Engineers, was awarded a Telford Medal and a Telford Premium, and was published in volume ex. of the Proceedings of the Institution. The subject still continued to attract little attention, and after sixteen years, at the invitation of Mr. Leon Gaster, and with the permission of the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Paper was rewritten and appeared in The Illuminating Engineer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illumination: And Its Development in the Present Day Chapters on the further development of illumina tion, the illumination of the printed book, and printed book decoration, are also amongst the additions. The chapters on the application of lettering and decoration from the commercial standpoint have also been developed considerably, and at the end of the book some notes have been added on books for further study. I have tried to write in as simple a manner as possible, so that the youngest student should have no difficulty in understanding the instructions that are given. So many books have been written on the subject of Illumination that it may seem quite superfluous to add yet another to the long list. Still, I think that a work treating the matter from the present-day stand point ought to be of some service to the student who is desirous of practising this art to-day. I have felt for some time past that there was a need for a work that would deal with the various ways in which this art could be applied in a time like the present. I have found that most of the books that have been written on Illumination treat the subject either from the standpoint of the archaeologist or merely from that of the amateur. It is simply the result of a sincere desire to supply what I feel to be a real need that this book has been written, and in the hope that it may serve as a handbook and guide for the serious worker. It has not been written with the idea of introducing a quick and easy method of becoming expert in the art of illumination. Success, in this, as in anything else of importance, can come only through hard work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Illumination Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Illumination Classic Reprint written by James Raley Cravath and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Illumination It is a matter of common knowledge among experts that a large amount of the artificial light that is now being produced is unnecessarily lost. Cases where this loss reaches one-half or two-thirds are matters of common observation. This does not include the waste of light by users who forget to turn it off when not needed. It refers simply to the failure of the average user to get anywhere near the full benefit possible from the light produced. Even more important than the economical side of the subject is the disastrous effect on the eyes caused by numerous common artificial lighting arrangements. The broad general principles which should be followed in the design of artificial illumination have been already well laid down by eminent authorities. The present work has been undertaken by the authors in order to supply much needed specific data and suggestions as to how to carry out these principles in practice. This common failure to get the practical results that should be obtained from the light purchased, as well as much of the ruin of eyesight now common with artificial light, is due to the fact that so few people understand the importance of the proper placing, reflecting and shading of artificial lights. More attention is being paid to these things than formerly, as is evidenced by the recent formation of the Illuminating Engineering Society; but there is still a great lack of easily available information on the many practical and technical points involved in the use of artificial light. In what follows, the authors attempt to present exact practical information of every-day use on many points that come up in arranging artificial lighting. Most of the information is in such shape that, while being of value to the technical man, it can be read with profit and applied by the non-technical public as well. A spreading of this kind of knowledge is to the interests both of electric light and gas companies and the users of such light. Download or read book A History of Malaysia written by Barbara Watson Andaya and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia's multicultural society supports one of the most dynamic economies in Asia. This completely revised new edition of the standard text, first published twenty years ago, traces the history of the country from early times to the present day. The authors give particular attention to the evolution of Malay polities and their close links with indigenous groups who lived on the oceans and in the deep jungles of the region, from Sumatra to Borneo. This provides the background to the establishment of the Malay port of Melaka, which was conquered by the Portuguese in 1511, foreshadowing the establishment of a British colonial regime in the late nineteenth century. Although the large numbers of Chinese and Indian migrants who arrived to work in the tin and rubber industries contributed to economic expansion, colonial policies did not encourage communal interaction. The authors trace the process by which post-independence leaders in Malaya attempted to counter the legacy of ethnic hostility while answering Malay demands for an affirmation of their rights and a stronger commitment to Islam. The incorporation of the Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 rendered the goal of welding a nation from areas that were geographically separated and culturally disparate even more problematic. The intense emotions attached to issues of race were made tragically evident in the racial riots of May 1969, which this book sees as a watershed in modern Malaysian history. As Malaysia enters the twenty-first century, the government is determined to oversee the transition to an economy focused on manufacturing and advanced technology, and to eliminate poverty and the association between occupation and race. While several recent studies deal with the impact of colonial rule and Malaysia's spectacular economic transition, this book is unique because it tracks developments from early times and identifies continuities as well as change. Combining the authors' specialist knowledge of precolonial sources with the most recent contemporary research, this new edition reinforces the position of A History of Malaysia position as a standard reference for all those interested in the historical processes which led to the emergence of this culturally varied and economically energetic country.

The rising interest in him since the centenary of his birth in 1957 is efficiently consolidating his very substantial claim to be reckoned as a significant novelist of the late Victorian period. In this selection of essays, stress has been laid almost exclusively on criticism, but biographical clues are frequently given in the pieces reprinted. This title aims to bring new students into touch with the novelist's works.
